Background: Although the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer is increasing, there are no effective practical preventive measures other than avoiding sun exposure. Objective: To elucidate the ...protective effect of topical application of biologically active vitamin D3 (calcitriol) on skin cancer development caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV). Methods: Groups of hairless mice were topically treated with either calcitriol or vehicle immediately after exposure to UVB and UVA three times weekly for the initial 20 weeks, and without UV exposure in the following 6 weeks. Tumor number was counted and biopsies were done for histopathologic analysis. The changes of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) were evaluated 1 hour and 11 hours after short term of UV exposure and application of calcitriol. For safety evaluation, blood test and body weights were evaluated at 23rd and 25th week. Results: Total tumor count and number of tumors less than 3 mm in size tended to be fewer in calcitriol group, and tumors more than 3 mm in size showed significantly lower tumor formation rate in calcitriol group. Single application of calcitriol reduced CPD at 1 hour and 11 hours after UV exposure. Histopathologic analysis showed tumors with lower grade malignancy in calcitriol group which suggested a delay in tumor progression. However, serum levels of calcium and phosphate in calcitriol group were above normal range, and weight loss was found. Conclusion: Topical calcitriol may suppress the formation and progression of UV-induced non-melanoma skin cancer by enhancing the repair mechanism of UV damage. (Ann Dermatol 28(3) 304∼313, 2016)
Purpose: We determined whether super(18)Ffluorothymidine (FLT) positron emission tomography (PET) can detect early effects on tumor proliferation of JAC106, a new anti-tubulin agent. Methods: ...Inhibition of tubulin polymerization and super(3)Hcolchicine binding were assessed in vitro. The effects of JAC106 on cytotoxicity, mitotic arrest, super(18)FFLT uptake, and thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) activity were examined in SW620 and KB-V1 cells. Dose-dependent antitumor effects of JAC106 were monitored by measuring tumor growth and by dynamic super(18)FFLT PET imaging in mice bearing SW620 and KB-V1 tumors. The proliferation status of tumors was examined. Results: JAC106 potently inhibited tubulin polymerization and decreased the viability of SW620 (p<0.001, half maximal inhibitory concentration, IC sub(50)=3.15+/-1.4) and KB-V1 (p<0.01, IC sub(50)=21.84+/-24.59) cells. Exposure to JAC106 induced mitotic arrest starting at 18 h and dose-dependently increased super(18)FFLT uptake/110 super(5) cells (p<0.05) and TK1 activity and expression in vitro. Administration of 30 mg/kg JAC106 to mice inhibited the growth of SW620 and KB-VI tumors (%T/C 3.34 and 20.6%, respectively). The baseline standardized uptake values (SUV) of SW620 and KB-V1 tumors were 0.96+/-0.31 and 2.29+/-0.70, respectively, with a significant difference (p<0.01). After 3 days of treatment with 30 mg/kg JAC106, the super(18)FFLT SUVs of SW620 and KB-V1 tumors, normalized to those before treatment, were 77.9+/-22.4% (p=0.059) and 43.2+/-14.0% (p<0.01), respectively. JAC106 significantly decreased the number of Ki-67-positive cells, TK1 activity, cell fraction in G sub(0)G sub(1) phase, and tumor expression of cyclins E, A, and B1 on day 3. Conclusion: super(18)FFLT PET can be used to monitor JAC106 inhibition of tumor growth, beginning 3 days after treatment. Incorporation of super(18)FFLT PET may be useful in the early clinical development of JAC106.
Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is an uncommon intraepithelial adenocarcinoma, primarily affecting the apocrine-bearing skin. Bowen disease is an intraepithelial squamous cell carcinoma having ...the potential to become invasive carcinoma. The histopathological concomitant features between EMPD and Bowen disease have been described. One theory is that primary EMPD arises multicentrically, within the epidermis from the pluripotent stem cells. Herein, we describe a case of EMPD that had bowenoid features, and review the previous cases associated with the origin of EMPD.
Complex oxide systems have attracted considerable attention because of their fascinating properties, including the magnetic ordering at the conducting interface between two band insulators, such as ...LaAlO3 (LAO) and SrTiO3 (STO). However, the manipulation of the spin degree of freedom at the LAO/STO heterointerface has remained elusive. Here, we have fabricated hybrid magnetic tunnel junctions consisting of Co and LAO/STO ferromagnets with the insertion of a Ti layer in between, which clearly exhibit magnetic switching and the tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect below 10 K. The magnitude and the of the TMR are strongly dependent on the direction of the rotational magnetic field parallel to the LAO/STO plane, which is attributed to a strong Rashba-type spin orbit coupling in the LAO/STO heterostructure. Our study provides a further support for the existence of the macroscopic ferromagnetism at LAO/STO heterointerfaces and opens a novel route to realize interfacial spintronics devices.

We report the vibrationally mediated photodissociation dynamics of C2H4 + excited through the B̃2Ag state. Vibrational state-selected ions were prepared by two-photon resonant, three-photon ...ionization of ethylene via (π, 3s) and (π, 3p) Rydberg intermediate states in the wavelength range 298−349 nm. Absorption of a fourth photon led to dissociation of the cation, and images of the product ions C2H3 + and C2H2 + were simultaneously recorded using reflectron multimass velocity map imaging. Analysis of the multimass images yielded, with high precision, both the total translational energy distributions for the two dissociation channels and the branching between them as a function of excitation energy. The dissociation of ions that were initially prepared with torsional excitation exceeding the barrier to planarity in the cation ground state consistently gave enhanced branching to the H elimination channel. The results are discussed in terms of the influence of the initial state preparation on the competition between the internal conversion to the ground state and to the first excited state.
Background: Psoriasis is an immune-mediated, chronic in-flammatory disease affecting multiple aspects of patients` lives. Its epidemiology varies regionally; however, nation-wide epidemiologic data ...on psoriasis depicting profile of Korean patients has not been available to date. Objective: To understand nationwide epidemiologic characteristics and clinical features of adult patients with psoriasis visited uni-versity hospitals in Korea. Methods: This multicenter, non-in-terventional, cross-sectional study recruited 1,278 adult pa-tients with psoriasis across 25 centers in Korea in 2013. Various clinical data including PASI, BSA, DLQI, SF-36 and PASE were collected. Results: A total of 1,260 patients com-pleted the study (male:female=1.47:1). The mean age was 47.0 years with a distribution mostly in the 50s (24.9%). Early onset (<40 years) of psoriasis accounted for 53.9% of patients. The mean disease duration was 109.2 months; mean body mass index was 23.9 kg/m2; and 12.7% of patients had a family history of psoriasis. Plaque and guttate types of psoriasis accounted for 85.8% and 8.4%, respectively. Patients with PASI ≥10 accounted for 24.9%; patients with body surface area ≥10 were 45.9%. Patients with DLQI ≥6 accounted for 78.8%. Between PASI <10 and PASI ≥10 groups, significant difference was noted in age at diagnosis, disease duration, blood pressure, waist cir-cumference of female, and treatment experiences with pho-totherapy, systemic agents, and biologics. Conclusion: This was the first nationwide epidemiologic study of patients with psoriasis in Korea and provides an overview of the epidemio-logic characteristics and clinical profiles of this patient population. Photofragment translational energy and angular distributions are reported for the photodissociation of acetaldehyde cations in the wavelength range 354−363 nm obtained using the DC slice ion imaging ...technique. Vibrationally selected parent ions were produced by 2+1 resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) via the 3s ← n Rydberg transition, with photodissociation resulting from absorption of a fourth additional photon. Three product channels were observed: HCO+, CH3CO+, and CH4 +. The angular distributions reveal that all product channels have a predominantly parallel recoil anisotropy although the lower β2 parameter of CH3CO+ indicates the concomitant presence of a perpendicular component. Furthermore, the distinct angular distribution of the CH3CO+ fragments shows a large value of the higher order Legendre polynomial term, providing evidence that acetaldehyde cations are spatially aligned during the ionization process.
