The calorimeter systems consist of three electromagnetic calorimeters, covering the combined pseudorapidity range from −3.7 to 3.8 and two hadronic calorimeters covering a combined range of −1.1<η<3.8. Key calorimeter performances which include energy and position resolutions, reconstruction efficiency, and particle identification will be presented.
Brain iron elevation is implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis, but the impact of iron on disease outcomes has not been previously explored in a longitudinal study. Ferritin is the major ...iron storage protein of the body; by using cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of ferritin as an index, we explored whether brain iron status impacts longitudinal outcomes in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort. We show that baseline CSF ferritin levels were negatively associated with cognitive performance over 7 years in 91 cognitively normal, 144 mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 67 AD subjects, and predicted MCI conversion to AD. Ferritin was strongly associated with CSF apolipoprotein E levels and was elevated by the Alzheimer's risk allele, APOE-ɛ4. These findings reveal that elevated brain iron adversely impacts on AD progression, and introduce brain iron elevation as a possible mechanism for APOE-ɛ4 being the major genetic risk factor for AD.
To investigate the nasal carriage of antibiotic-resistant pneumococci by children, anterior nasal swabs were done for 4963 children <5 years old in 11 countries in Asia and the Middle East. In total, ...1105 pneumococci isolates (carriage rate, 22.3%) were collected, 35.8% of which were found to be nonsusceptible to penicillin. Prevalence of penicillin nonsusceptibility was highest in Taiwan (91.3%), followed by Korea (85.8%), Sri Lanka (76.5%), and Vietnam (70.4%). Penicillin resistance was related to residence in urban areas, enrollment in day care, and a history of otitis media. The most common serogroups were 6 (21.5%), 23 (16.5%), and 19 (15.7%). The most common clone, as assessed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, was identical to the Spanish 23F clone and to strains of invasive isolates from adult patients. Data in this study documented the high rate of penicillin or multidrug resistance among isolates of pneumococci carried nasally in children in Asia and the Middle East and showed that this is due to the spread of a few predominant clones in the region.
Keloids represent a pathological response to cutaneous injury, creating disfiguring scars with no known satisfactory treatment. They are characterized by an excessive accumulation of extracellular ...matrix, especially collagen. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of keloids. The three TGF-beta isoforms identified in mammals (TGF-beta1, -beta2, and -beta3), are thought to have different biological activities in wound healing. TGF-beta1 and TGF-beta2 are believed to promote fibrosis and scar formation, whereas TGF-beta3 has been shown to be either scar inducing or reducing, depending on the study. The aim of this study was to characterize expression of TGF-beta isoforms in keloids at the protein level using Western blot analysis. The authors found that TGF-beta1 and -beta2 proteins were at higher levels in keloid fibroblast cultures compared with normal human dermal fibroblast cultures. In contrast, the expression of TGF-beta3 protein was comparable in both the normal (N = 3) and keloid (N = 3) cell lines. These findings, demonstrating increased TGF-beta1 and -beta2 protein expression in keloids relative to normal human dermal fibroblasts further support the roles of TGF-beta1 and -beta2 as fibrosis-inducing cytokines.
The Global Point Prevalence Survey (Global-PPS) established an international network of hospitals to measure antimicrobial prescribing and resistance worldwide. We aimed to assess antimicrobial ...prescribing and resistance in hospital inpatients.
We used a standardised surveillance method to collect detailed data about antimicrobial prescribing and resistance from hospitals worldwide, which were grouped by UN region. The internet-based survey included all inpatients (adults, children, and neonates) receiving an antimicrobial who were on the ward at 0800 h on one specific day between January and September, 2015. Hospitals were classified as primary, secondary, tertiary (including infectious diseases hospitals), and paediatric hospitals. Five main ward types were defined: medical wards, surgical wards, intensive-care units, haematology oncology wards, and medical transplantation (bone marrow or solid transplants) wards. Data recorded included patient characteristics, antimicrobials received, diagnosis, therapeutic indication according to predefined lists, and markers of prescribing quality (eg, whether a stop or review date were recorded, and whether local prescribing guidelines existed and were adhered to). We report findings for adult inpatients.
The Global-PPS for 2015 included adult data from 303 hospitals in 53 countries, including eight lower-middle-income and 17 upper-middle-income countries. 86 776 inpatients were admitted to 3315 adult wards, of whom 29 891 (34·4%) received at least one antimicrobial. 41 213 antimicrobial prescriptions were issued, of which 36 792 (89·3%) were antibacterial agents for systemic use. The top three antibiotics prescribed worldwide were penicillins with β-lactamase inhibitors, third-generation cephalosporins, and fluoroquinolones. Carbapenems were most frequently prescribed in Latin America and west and central Asia. Of patients who received at least one antimicrobial, 5926 (19·8%) received a targeted antibacterial treatment for systemic use, and 1769 (5·9%) received a treatment targeting at least one multidrug-resistant organism. The frequency of health-care-associated infections was highest in Latin America (1518 11·9%) and east and south Asia (5363 10·1%). Overall, the reason for treatment was recorded in 31 694 (76·9%) of antimicrobial prescriptions, and a stop or review date in 15 778 (38·3%). Local antibiotic guidelines were missing for 7050 (19·2%) of the 36 792 antibiotic prescriptions, and guideline compliance was 77·4%.
The Global-PPS showed that worldwide surveillance can be accomplished with voluntary participation. It provided quantifiable measures to assess and compare the quantity and quality of antibiotic prescribing and resistance in hospital patients worldwide. These data will help to improve the quality of antibiotic prescribing through education and practice changes, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries that have no tools to monitor antibiotic prescribing in hospitals.

We summarize and combine direct measurements of the mass of the W boson in radicals = 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collision data collected by CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. ...Earlier measurements from CDF and D0 are combined with the two latest, more precise measurements: a CDF measurement in the electron and muon channels using data corresponding to 2.2 fb super(-1) of integrated luminosity, and a D0 measurement in the electron channel using data corresponding to 4.3 fb super(-1) of integrated luminosity. The resulting Tevatron average for the mass of the W boson is MW = 80387 + or - 16 MeV. Including measurements obtained in electron-positron collisions at LEP yields the most precise value of MW = 80385 + or - 15 MeV.

This study aimed to determine whether a measure of lower limb segment stability derived from body-worn inertial measurement units can predict risk for lower limb musculoskeletal injury in Division I ...Collegiate Football Players (D1CFP).
The region of limb stability (ROLS) values were collected in a cohort of D1CFP during preseason. ROLS is a measure of knee joint stability, defined by thigh and shank excursion (cm) in the anterior-posterior and medial-lateral direction during single limb stance. The ROLS symmetry index (SI) (%) is the ratio between lower limb ROLS values where 100% suggests absolute symmetry.
One-hundred and four D1CFP participated in this study and were divided into two groups: 1) no previous lower limb injury or no in-season injury (n = 70, "noninjured group") and 2) no previous lower limb injury, but in-season injury requiring surgery (n = 34, "injured group" group). The mean ± SD ROLS SI was 82.86% ± 14.75% and 65.58% ± 16.46% for the noninjured and injured group, respectively. Significant differences in ROLS SI were found between groups (P < 0.001). The ROLS SI demonstrated an area under the curve of 0.8 (P < 0.001; 95% confidence interval = 0.71-0.88) with an SE of 0.04, indicating that the ROLS SI has good predictive accuracy in detecting those healthy D1CFP at risk for lower limb injury resulting in surgery.
The ROLS SI was found to have good predictive accuracy in detecting individuals at risk for injury that were healthy and asymptomatic during preseason testing. Increase in thigh and shank excursions and/or decrease in SI between lower limbs may be a predictor of risk for future injury.
The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is a cutting-edge accelerator facility that will study the nature of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of the visible matter in the universe. The proposed ...experiment will be realized at Brookhaven National Laboratory in approximately 10 years from now, with detector design and R&D currently ongoing. Notably, EIC is one of the first large-scale facilities to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) already starting from the design and R&D phases. The EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment (ECCE) is a consortium that proposed a detector design based on a 1.5 T solenoid. The EIC detector proposal review concluded that the ECCE design will serve as the reference design for an EIC detector. Herein we describe a comprehensive optimization of the ECCE tracker using AI. The work required a complex parametrization of the simulated detector system. Herein our approach dealt with an optimization problem in a multidimensional design space driven by multiple objectives that encode the detector performance, while satisfying several mechanical constraints. We describe our strategy and show results obtained for the ECCE tracking system. The AI-assisted design is agnostic to the simulation framework and can be extended to other sub-detectors or to a system of sub-detectors to further optimize the performance of the EIC detector.
