The completion of Run 1 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN has seen the discovery of the Higgs boson and an unprecedented number of precise measurements of the Standard Model, and Run 2 has ...begun to provide the first data at higher energy. The high-luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) and the four experiments (ATLAS, CMS, ALICE, and LHCb) will exploit the full potential of the collider to discover and explore new physics beyond the Standard Model. We review the experimental challenges and the physics opportunities in proton-proton collisions at the HL-LHC.
The membrane-trafficking system underpins cellular trafficking of material in eukaryotes and its evolution would have been a watershed in eukaryogenesis. Evolutionary cell biological studies have ...been unraveling the history of proteins responsible for vesicle transport and organelle identity revealing both highly conserved components and lineage-specific innovations. Recently, endomembrane components with a broad, but patchy, distribution have been observed as well, pieces that are missing from our cell biological and evolutionary models of membrane trafficking. These data together allow for new insights into the history and forces that shape the evolution of this critical cell biological system.
The literature assessing the process of note-writing based on gathered information is scant. This scoping review investigates methods of providing feedback on learners' note-writing abilities.
Scopus ...and Web of Science were searched for studies that investigated feedback on student notes or reviewed notes written on an information or data-gathering activity in health care and other fields in August 2022. Of 426 articles screened, 23 met the inclusion criteria. Data were extracted on the article title, publication year, study location, study aim, study design, number of participants, participant demographics, level of education, type of note written, field of study, form of feedback given, source of the feedback, and student or participant rating of feedback method from the included articles. Then possible themes were identified and a final consensus-based thematic analysis was performed.
Themes identified in the 23 included articles were as follows: (1) learners found faculty and peer feedback beneficial; (2) direct written comments and evaluation tools, such as rubrics or checklists, were the most common feedback methods; (3) reports on notes in real clinical settings were limited (simulated clinical scenarios in preclinical curriculum were the most studied); (4) feedback providers and recipients benefit from having prior training on providing and receiving feedback; (5) sequential or iterative feedback was beneficial for learners but can be time intensive for faculty and confounded by maturation effects; and (6) use of technology and validated assessment tools facilitate the feedback process through ease of communication and improved organization.
The various factors influencing impact and perception of feedback include the source, structure, setting, use of technology, and amount of feedback provided. As the utility of note-writing in health care expands, studies are needed to clarify the value of note feedback in learning and the role of innovative technologies in facilitating note feedback.
Plasma deposition of SiO 2 thin films is successfully used as an effective barrier coating against gas permeation. One of the well-established deposition processes is Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor ...Deposition (PE-CVD) 1. The good quality of thin film (thikness of few tens of nanometer) criticaly depends on the fluence of atomic oxygen species and the effective control of this process parameter is essential.
AbstractThe potential for the discovery of a Standard Model Higgs boson in the mass range mH < 2 mZ in the vector boson fusion mode has been studied for the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The ...characteristic signatures of additional jets in the forward regions of the detector and of low jet activity in the central region allow for an efficient background rejection. Analyses for the H → WW(*) and H → ττ decay modes have been performed using a realistic simulation of the expected detector performance. The results obtained demonstrate the large discovery potential in the H → WW(*) decay channel and the sensitivity to Higgs boson decays into τ-pairs in the low-mass region around 120 GeV/c2.
The goal of this study was to examine children's cognitive and language development and social engagement of mother as mediators of the relationship between maternal emotional availability at 15 ...months and children's empathy at the ages of two and four. Participants were 661 low‐income, ethnically diverse mother‐child dyads participating in a trial of home visitation in the Denver area. Using home‐ and lab‐based free‐play episodes, mothers' emotional availability (15 months) and children's social engagement of mother (21 and 24 months) were assessed. Standardized measures were used to assess children's language development (21 months) and cognitive development (24 months). Empathy was assessed using a simulated injury paradigm at ages two (both 21 and 24 months) and four. The predictive models supported the hypothesis that the child's cognitive and social resources mediate the relationship between maternal emotional availability and children's empathy with respect to empathy at the age of two toward both mothers and an unfamiliar examiner. These results indicate that parental sensitive behavior is not the only important condition for predicting children's empathy, and that children's own internalized resources are a likely mechanism of transmission from parents caring for their children to children learning to care for others.
Following recent ATLAS and CMS publications we interpret the results of their Higgs searches in terms of standard model operators. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV we determine several Higgs ...couplings from published 2011 data and extrapolate the results towards different scenarios of LHC running. Even though our analysis is limited by low statistics we already derive meaningful constraints on modified Higgs sectors.
Rapid and accurate detection of the novel coronavirus using a nasopharyngeal specimen requires training for professionals who may have limited experience. To respond to the urgent need, an ...interprofessional team created a just-in-time (JIT) module to provide only what was needed, precisely when needed, and rapidly deployed training sessions to a large group of health professionals.
In April and May 2020, health professionals from the hospital, ambulatory clinics, and public health attended training. Procedural comfort/knowledge and perception of the training were assessed with pre-survey and post-survey.
Comfort level in collecting a nasopharyngeal specimen among participating health professionals increased from 2.89 (n = 338) on the pre-survey to 4.51 (n = 300) on the postsurvey on a 5-point scale. Results revealed a significant difference (P < .01) between pre-post knowledge questions regarding the correct angle and depth of the swab to obtain an adequate sample from the nasopharynx.
This study demonstrates that a JIT intervention can improve knowledge and comfort regarding the nasopharyngeal swab procedure. In preparation for the prevention and mitigation of future viral outbreaks (ie, coronavirus and influenza), educators should consider creating JIT skills training for health care professionals who may be deployed to assist in mass testing efforts.
