Abstract
IW And-type dwarf novae are a recently recognized group of cataclysmic variables which are characterized by a sequence of brightening from a standstill-like phase with damping oscillations ...often followed by a deep dip. We found that the supposed classical nova BC Cas which erupted in 1929 experienced a state of an IW And-type dwarf nova in 2018, 89 yr after the eruption. This finding suggests that a high mass-transfer rate following the nova eruption is associated with the IW And-type phenomenon. The mass of the white dwarf inferred from the decline rate of the nova is considerably higher than the average mass of the white dwarfs in cataclysmic variables, and these massive white dwarfs may be responsible for the manifestation of the IW And-type phenomenon.
Abstract
The lowest possible mass of ONeMg white dwarfs (WDs) has not been clarified despite its importance in the formation and evolution of WDs. We tackle this issue by studying the properties of ...V1405 Cas (Nova Cassiopeiae 2021), which is an outlier given a combination of its very slow light-curve evolution and the recently reported neon-nova identification. We report its rapid spectral evolution in the initial phase, covering 9.88, 23.77, 33.94, 53.53, 71.79, and 81.90 hr after the discovery. The first spectrum is characterized by lines from highly ionized species, most noticeably He
ii
and N
iii
. These lines are quickly replaced by lower-ionization lines, e.g., N
ii
, Si
ii
, and O
i
. In addition, Al
ii
(6237 Å) starts emerging as an emission line at the second epoch. We perform emission-line strength diagnostics, showing that the density and temperature quickly decrease toward later epochs. This behavior, together with the decreasing velocity seen in H
α
, H
β
, and He
i
, indicates that the initial nova dynamics is reasonably well described by an expanding fireball on top of an expanding photosphere. Interestingly, the strengths of the N
iii
and Al
ii
indicate large enhancement in abundance, pointing to a ONeMg WD progenitor as is consistent with its neon-nova classification. Given its low-mass nature inferred by the slow light-curve evolution and relatively narrow emission lines, it provides a challenge to the stellar evolution theory that predicts the lower limit of the ONeMg WD mass being ∼1.1

Abstract
We present optical and near-infrared observations of the nearby Type Iax supernova (SN) 2014dt from 14 to 410 d after the maximum light. The velocities of the iron absorption lines in the ...early phase indicated that SN 2014dt showed slower expansion than the well-observed Type Iax SNe 2002cx, 2005hk, and 2012Z. In the late phase, the evolution of the light curve and that of the spectra were considerably slower. The spectral energy distribution kept roughly the same shape after ∼100 d, and the bolometric light curve flattened during the same period. These observations suggest the existence of an optically thick component that almost fully trapped the γ-ray energy from 56Co decay. These findings are consistent with the predictions of the weak deflagration model, leaving a bound white dwarf remnant after the explosion.
Abstract
IW And stars are a recently recognized subgroup of dwarf novae which are characterized by (often repetitive) slowly rising standstills terminated by brightening, but the exact mechanism for ...this variation is not yet identified. We have identified BO Cet, which had been considered as a novalike cataclysmic variable, as a new member of IW And stars based on its behavior in 2019–2020. In addition to this, the object showed dwarf nova-type outbursts in 2020–2021, and superhumps that had periods $7.8\%$ longer than the orbital one developed during at least one long outburst. This object has been confirmed as an SU UMa-type dwarf nova with an exceptionally long orbital period (0.1398 d). BO Cet is thus the first cataclysmic variable showing both SU UMa-type and IW And-type features. We obtained a mass ratio (q) of 0.31–0.34 from the superhumps in the growing phase (stage A superhumps). At this q, the radius of the 3 : 1 resonance, responsible for tidal instability and superhumps, and the tidal truncation radius are very similar. We interpret that in some occasions this object showed IW And-type variation when the disk size was not large enough, but that the radius of the 3 : 1 resonance could be reached as a result of thermal instability. We also discuss that there are SU UMa-type dwarf novae above q = 0.30, which is above the previously considered limit (∼0.25) derived from numerical simulations and that this is possible since the radius of the 3 : 1 resonance is inside the tidal truncation radius. We constrained the mass of the white dwarf larger than 1.0 M⊙, which may be responsible for the IW And-type behavior and the observed strength of the He ii emission. The exact reason, however, why this object is unique in that it shows both SU UMa-type and IW And-type features is still unsolved.
Abstract
ASASSN-14dx showed an extraordinary outburst whose features are a small outburst amplitude (∼2.3 mag) and long duration (>4 yr). Because we found a long observational gap of 123 d before the ...outburst detection, we propose that the main outburst plateau was missed and that this outburst is just a “fading tail” often seen after the WZ Sge-type super-outbursts. In order to distinguish between WZ Sge and SU UMa-type dwarf novae (DNe), we investigated Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) statistically. We applied a logistic regression model and succeeded in classifying by using absolute Gaia magnitudes MG and Gaia colors GBP–GRP. Our new classifier also suggests that ASASSN-14dx is the best candidate of a WZ Sge-type DN. We estimated distances from the Earth of known WZ Sge stars by using Gaia DR2 parallaxes. The result indicates that ASASSN-14dx is the third-nearest WZ Sge star (next to WZ Sge and V455 And), and hence the object can show the third-brightest WZ Sge-type super-outburst whose maximum is V = 8–9 mag.
Abstract
We studied Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) light curves of 34 dwarf nova candidates discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) between 2020 May 12 and September 9 ...and found six AM CVn-type candidates. All objects showed short outbursts (post-superoutburst rebrightenings) on the fading tail. Two objects (ASASSN-20eq, ASASSN-20la) showed double superoutbursts. Three objects (ASASSN-20jt, ASASSN-20ke, and ASASSN-20lr) showed short superoutbursts (5–6 d). These features in the light curve can be used in discriminating AM CVn-type candidates from hydrogen-rich systems. In contrast to hydrogen-rich systems, some object did not show red color excess during the rebrightening or fading tail phase. We interpret that this is due to the higher ionization temperature in helium disks. Two objects had long (likely) supercycles: ASASSN-20gx (8.5 yr) and ASASSN-20lr (7 yr). We provide a scheme for identifying AM CVn-type candidates based on the light curve characteristics.

Abstract
IW And stars are a recently recognized group of dwarf novae which are characterized by a repeated sequence of brightening from a standstill-like phase with damping oscillations followed by a ...deep dip. Kimura et al. (2019, PASJ, submitted) recently proposed a model based on thermal-viscous disk instability in a tilted disk to reproduce the IW And-type characteristics. IM Eri experienced the IW And-type phase in 2018 and we recorded three cycles of the (damping) oscillation phase terminated by brightening. We identified two periods during the IW And-type state: 4–5 d small-amplitude (often damping) oscillations and a 34–43 d long cycle. This behavior is typical for an IW And-type star. The object gradually brightened within the long cycle before the next brightening, which terminated the (damping) oscillation phase. This observation agrees with the increasing disk mass during the long cycle predicted by the Kimura et al. model of thermal-viscous disk instability in a tilted disk. We did not, however, succeed in detecting negative superhumps, which are considered to be the signature of a tilted disk.
Abstract
We report on a superoutburst of a WZ Sge-type dwarf nova (DN), ASASSN-15po. The light curve showed the main superoutburst and multiple rebrightenings. In this outburst, we observed early ...superhumps and growing (stage A) superhumps with periods of 0.050454(2) and 0.051809(13) d, respectively. orb ∼ 72.6 min is the first DN with an orbital period between 67–76 min. Although the theoretical predicted period minimum P
min of hydrogen-rich cataclysmic variables (CVs) is about 65–70 min, the observational cut-off of the orbital period distribution at 80 min implies that the period minimum is about 82 min, and the value is widely accepted. We suggest the following four possibilities: the object is (1) a theoretical period minimum object, (2) a binary with a evolved secondary, (3) a binary with a metal-poor (Popullation II) seconday, or (4) a binary which was born with a brown-dwarf donor below the period minimum.
Abstract
We report on multi-wavelength monitoring observations of an M-dwarf flare star AD Leonis with the Seimei Telescope (6150–7930 Å), SCAT (Spectroscopic Chuo-university Astronomical Telescope; ...3700–7500 Å), and NICER (Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer; 0.2–12.0 keV), with the collaboration of the OISTER (Optical and Infrared Synergetic Telescopes for Education and Research) program. Twelve flares are detected in total, including ten Hα, four X-ray, and four optical-continuum flares; one of them is a superflare with a total energy of ∼2.0 × 1033 erg. We found that: (1) during the superflare, the Hα emission line full width at 1/8 maximum dramatically increases to 14 Å from 8 Å in the low-resolution spectra (R ∼ 2000) accompanied by large white-light flares, (2) some weak Hα/X-ray flares are not accompanied by white-light emissions, and (3) the non-flaring emissions show clear rotational modulations in X-ray and Hα intensity in the same phase. To understand these observational features, one-dimensional hydrodynamic flare simulations are performed using the RADYN code. We find the simulated Hα line profiles with hard and high-energy non-thermal electron beams to be consistent with the initial phase line profiles of the superflares, while those with a softer and/or weak-energy beam are consistent with those in decay phases, indicating the changes in the energy fluxes injected to the lower atmosphere. Also, we find that the relation between the optical continuum and Hα intensity is nonlinear, which can be one cause of the non-white-light flares. The flare energy budget exhibits diversity in the observations and models, and more observations of stellar flares are necessary for constraining the occurrence of various emission line phenomena in stellar flares.
Abstract
In the first days of WZ Sge-type dwarf nova (DN) outbursts, the 2 : 1 resonance induces a spiral arm structure in the accretion disk, which is observed as early superhumps in optical light ...curves. We reports on our optical observations of an eclipsing WZ Sge-type DN PNV J00444033+4113068 during its 2021 superoutburst using the 3.8 m Seimei telescope and through the Variable Star Network collaboration. The eclipse analysis showed that its orbital period was 0.055425534(1) d. Our observations confirmed early superhumps with an amplitude of 0.7 mag, the largest amplitude among known WZ Sge-type DNe. More interestingly, its early superhumps became the reddest around their secondary minimum, whereas other WZ Sge-type DNe show the reddest color around the early superhump maximum. The spectrum around the peak of the outburst showed two double-peaked emission lines of He ii 4686 Å and Hα with a peak separation of ≥700 km s−1, supporting a very high-inclination system. With the early superhump mapping, the unique profile and color of the early superhump are successfully reproduced by an accretion disk with a vertically extended double arm structure. Therefore, a large amplitude and a unique color behavior of the early superhumps in PNV J00444033+4113068 can be explained by the 2 : 1 resonance model along with other WZ Sge-type DNe.
