The Soot Particle Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (SP-AMS) was developed to measure the chemical and physical properties of particles containing refractory black carbon (rBC). The SP-AMS is an Aerodyne ...Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) equipped with an intracavity laser vaporizer (1064 nm) based on the Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) design, in addition to the resistively heated, tungsten vaporizer used in a standard AMS. The SP-AMS can be operated with the laser vaporizer alone, with both the laser and tungsten vaporizers, or with the tungsten vaporizer alone. When operating with only the laser vaporizer, the SP-AMS is selectively sensitive to laser-light absorbing particles, such as ambient rBC-containing particles as well as metal nanoparticles, and measures both the refractory and nonrefractory components. When operated with both vaporizers and modulating the laser on and off, the instrument measures the refractory components of absorbing particles and the nonrefractory particulate matter of all sampled particles. The SP-AMS design, mass spectral interpretation, calibration, and sensitivity are described. Instrument calibrations yield a sensitivity of greater than 140 carbon ions detected per picogram of rBC mass sampled, a 3σ detection limit of less than 0.1 μg·m
−3
for 60 s averaging, and a mass-specific ionization efficiency relative to particulate nitrate of 0.2 ± 0.1. Sensitivities were found to vary depending upon laser-particle beam overlap. The utility of the instrument to characterize ambient rBC aerosol is demonstrated.

We demonstrate a new technique for absolute distance measurement with a femtosecond frequency comb laser, based on unraveling the output of an interferometer to distinct comb modes with 1 GHz ...spacing. From the fringe patterns that are captured with a camera, a distance is derived by combining spectral and homodyne interferometry, exploiting about 9000 continuous wave lasers. This results in a measurement accuracy far within an optical fringe (λ/30), combined with a large range of nonambiguity (15 cm). Our technique merges multiwavelength interferometry and spectral interferometry, within a single scheme.
A single-particle soot photometer (SP2) was flown on a NASA WB-57F high-altitude research aircraft in November 2004 from Houston, Texas. The SP2 uses laser-induced incandescence to detect individual ...black carbon (BC) particles in an air sample in the mass range of approx.3-300 fg (approx.0.15-0.7 microns volume equivalent diameter). Scattered light is used to size the remaining non-BC aerosols in the range of approx.0.17-0.7 microns diameter. We present profiles of both aerosol types from the boundary layer to the lower stratosphere from two midlatitude flights. Results for total aerosol amounts in the size range detected by the SP2 are in good agreement with typical particle spectrometer measurements in the same region. All ambient incandescing particles were identified as BC because their incandescence properties matched those of laboratory-generated BC aerosol. Approximately 40% of these BC particles showed evidence of internal mixing (e.g., coating). Throughout profiles between 5 and 18.7 km, BC particles were less than a few percent of total aerosol number, and black carbon aerosol (BCA) mass mixing ratio showed a constant gradient with altitude above 5 km. SP2 data was compared to results from the ECHAM4/MADE and LmDzT-INCA global aerosol models. The comparison will help resolve the important systematic differences in model aerosol processes that determine BCA loadings. Further intercomparisons of models and measurements as presented here will improve the accuracy of the radiative forcing contribution from BCA.
ABSTRACT
Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported as biomarkers for disease diagnosis. RT‐qPCR is most commonly used to detect miRNAs; however, no consensus on the most appropriate method ...for data normalization exists. Via a standardized selection method, we aimed to determine separate miRNA normalization panels for RT‐qPCR measurements on whole blood, platelets, and serum. Candidate miRNAs were selected from studies describing circulating miRNA microarray data in the Gene Expression Omnibus or ArrayExpress. miRNA expression data of healthy controls were retrieved from each study. For each sample type, we selected those miRNAs that were least variable and sufficiently highly expressed in multiple microarray experiments, performed on at least 2 different platforms. Stability of the candidate miRNAs was assessed using NormFinder and geNorm algorithms in a RT‐qPCR cohort of 10 patients with coronary artery disease and 10 healthy controls. We selected miRNA normalization panels for RT‐qPCR measurements on whole blood, platelets, and serum. As a validation, we assessed the precision of all 3 panels in 3 independent RT‐qPCR cohorts and compared this with normalization for miR‐16 or RNU6B. PurposeRandomized controlled trials have shown the efficacy of atropine for progressive myopia, and this treatment has become the preferred pattern for this condition in Taiwan. This study explores ...the effectiveness of atropine 0.5% treatment for progressive high myopia and adherence to therapy in a non-Asian country.MethodsAn effectiveness study was performed in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Overall 77 children (mean age 10.3 years±2.3), of European (n=53), Asian (n=18), and African (n=6) descent with progressive myopia were prescribed atropine 0.5% eye drops daily. Both parents and children filled in a questionnaire regarding adverse events and adherence to therapy. A standardized eye examination including cycloplegic refraction and axial length was performed at baseline and 1, 4, and 12 months after initiation of therapy.ResultsMean spherical equivalent at baseline was -6.6D (±3.3). The majority (60/77, 78%) of children adhered to atropine treatment for 12 months; 11 of the 17 children who discontinued therapy did so within 1 month after the start of therapy. The most prominent reported adverse events were photophobia (72%), followed by reading problems (38%), and headaches (22%). The progression rate of spherical equivalent before treatment (-1.0D/year±0.7) diminished substantially during treatment (-0.1D/year±0.7) compared to those who ceased therapy (-0.5D/year±0.6; P=0.03).ConclusionsDespite the relatively high occurrence of adverse events, our study shows that atropine can be an effective and sustainable treatment for progressive high myopia in Europeans.
Research has shown that maladaptive personality characteristics, such as Neuroticism, are associated with poor outcome after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The current exploratory study ...investigated the neural underpinnings of this process using dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) analyses of resting-state (rs) fMRI, and diffusion MRI (dMRI). Twenty-seven mTBI patients and 21 healthy controls (HC) were included. After measuring the Big Five personality dimensions, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to obtain a superordinate factor representing emotional instability, consisting of high Neuroticism, moderate Openness, and low Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. Persistent symptoms were measured using the head injury symptom checklist at six months post-injury; symptom severity (i.e., sum of all items) was used for further analyses. For patients, brain MRI was performed in the sub-acute phase (~1 month) post-injury. Following parcellation of rs-fMRI using independent component analysis, leading eigenvector dynamic analysis (LEiDA) was performed to compute dynamic phase-locking brain states. Main patterns of brain diffusion were computed using tract-based spatial statistics followed by PCA. No differences in phase-locking state measures were found between patients and HC. Regarding dMRI, a trend significant decrease in fractional anisotropy was found in patients relative to HC, particularly in the fornix, genu of the corpus callosum, anterior and posterior corona radiata. Visiting one specific phase-locking state was associated with lower symptom severity after mTBI. This state was characterized by two clearly delineated communities (each community consisting of areas with synchronized phases): one representing an executive/saliency system, with a strong contribution of the insulae and basal ganglia; the other representing the canonical default mode network. In patients who scored high on emotional instability, this relationship was even more pronounced. Dynamic phase-locking states were not related to findings on dMRI. Altogether, our results provide preliminary evidence for the coupling between personality and dFNC in the development of long-term symptoms after mTBI.
Airborne observations of fluorescent aerosol were made aboard an airship during CloudLab, a series of flights that took place in September and October of 2013 and covered a wideband of longitude ...across the continental U.S. between Florida and California and between 28 and 37 N latitudes. Sampling occurred from near the surface to 1000 m above the ground. A Wideband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor (WIBS‐4) measured average concentrations of supermicron fluorescent particles aloft (1 µm to 10 µm), revealing number concentrations ranging from 2.1 ± 0.8 to 8.7 ± 2.2 × 104 particles m−3 and representing up to 24% of total supermicron particle number. We observed distinct variations in size distributions and fluorescent characteristics in different regions, and attribute these to geographically diverse bioaerosol. Fluorescent aerosol detected in the east is largely consistent with mold spores observed in a laboratory setting, while a shift to larger sizes associated with different fluorescent patterns is observed in the west. Fluorescent bioaerosol loadings in the desert west were as high as those near the Gulf of Mexico, suggesting that bioaerosol is a substantial component of supermicron aerosol both in humid and arid environments. The observations are compared to model fungal and bacterial loading predictions, and good agreement in both particle size and concentrations is observed in the east. In the west, the model underestimated observed concentrations by a factor between 2 and 4 and the prescribed particle sizes are smaller than the observed fluorescent aerosol. A classification scheme for use with WIBS data is also presented.

A generic formalism is proposed for reference dosimetry in the presence of a magnetic field. Besides the regular correction factors from the conventional reference dosimetry formalisms, two factors ...are used to take into account magnetic field effects: (1) a dose conversion factor to correct for the change in local dose distribution and (2) a correction of the reading of the dosimeter used for the reference dosimetry measurements. The formalism was applied to the Elekta MRI-Linac, for which the 1.5 T magnetic field is orthogonal to the 7 MV photon beam. For this setup at reference conditions it was shown that the dose decreases with increasing magnetic field strength. The reduction in local dose for a 1.5 T transverse field, compared to no field is 0.51% ± 0.03% at the reference point of 10 cm depth. The effect of the magnetic field on the reading of the dosimeter was measured for two waterproof ionization chambers types (PTW 30013 and IBA FC65-G) before and after multiple ramp-up and ramp-downs of the magnetic field. The chambers were aligned perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field. The corrections of the readings of the perpendicularly aligned chambers were 0.967 ± 0.002 and 0.957 ± 0.002 for respectively the PTW and IBA ionization chambers. In the parallel alignment the corrections were small; 0.997 ± 0.001 and 1.002 ± 0.003 for the PTW and IBA chamber respectively. The change in reading due to the magnetic field can be measured by individual departments. The proposed formalism can be used to determine the correction factors needed to establish the absorbed dose in a magnetic field. It requires Monte Carlo simulations of the local dose and measurements of the response of the dosimeter. The formalism was successfully implemented for the MRI-Linac and is applicable for other field strengths and geometries.
Objectives
To compare image quality of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and contrast-enhanced breast MRI (DCE-T1) stratified by the amount of fibroglandular tissue (FGT) as a measure of breast ...density.
Methods
Retrospective, multi-reader, bicentric visual grading analysis study on breast density (A–D) and overall image and fat suppression quality of DWI and DCE-T1, scored on a standard 5-point Likert scale. Cross tabulations and visual grading characteristic (VGC) curves were calculated for fatty breasts (A/B) versus dense breasts (C/D).
Results
Image quality of DWI was higher in the case of increased breast density, with good scores (score 3–5) in 85.9% (D) and 88.4% (C), compared to 61.6% (B) and 53.5% (A). Overall image quality of DWI was in favor of dense breasts (C/D), with an area under the VGC curve of 0.659 (
p
< 0.001). Quality of DWI and DCE-T1 fat suppression increased with higher breast density, with good scores (score 3–5) for 86.9% and 45.7% of density D, and 90.2% and 42.9% of density C cases, compared to 76.0% and 33.6% for density B and 54.7% and 29.6% for density A (DWI and DCE-T1 respectively).
Conclusions
Dense breasts show excellent fat suppression and substantially higher image quality in DWI images compared with non-dense breasts. These results support the setup of studies exploring DWI-based MR imaging without IV contrast for additional screening of women with dense breasts.
Clinical relevance statement
Our findings demonstrate that image quality of DWI is robust in women with an increased amount of fibroglandular tissue, technically supporting the feasibility of exploring applications such as screening of women with mammographically dense breasts.

Background and objectives
Blood-based biomarkers and advanced neuroimaging modalities such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) or diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) have enhanced our understanding ...of the pathophysiology of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). However, there is limited published data on how blood biomarkers relate to neuroimaging biomarkers post-mTBI.
Methods
To investigate this, 30 patients with mTBI and 21 healthy controls were enrolled. Data was collected at two timepoints postinjury: acute, < 24 h, (blood) and subacute, four-to-six weeks, (blood and imaging). Interleukin (IL) 6 and 10 (inflammation), free thiols (systemic oxidative stress) and neurofilament light (NF-L) (axonal injury) were quantified in plasma. The neurometabolites total N-acetyl aspartate (tNAA) (neuronal energetics), Myo-Inositol (Ins) and total Choline (tCh) (inflammation) and, Glutathione (GSH, oxidative stress) were quantified using MRS.
Results
Concentrations of IL-6 and IL-10 were significantly elevated in the acute phase post-mTBI, while NF-L was elevated only in the subacute phase. Total NAA was lowered in patients with mTBI, although this difference was only nominally significant (uncorrected

< 0.05). Within the patient group, acute IL-6 and subacute tNAA levels were negatively associated (

= − 0.46, uncorrected-

= 0.01), albeit not at a threshold corrected for multiple testing (corrected

Conclusion
This study demonstrates potential associations between the intensity of the inflammatory response in the acute phase post-mTBI and neurometabolic perturbations in the subacute phase. Future studies should assess the longitudinal dynamics of blood-based and imaging biomarkers after injury.
