Using the high-resolution performance of the fragment separator FRS at GSI we have discovered 60 new neutron-rich isotopes in the atomic number range of 60 <= Z <= 78 . The new isotopes were ...unambiguously identified in reactions with a U 238 beam impinging on a Be target at 1 GeV/nucleon. The production cross-section for the new isotopes have been measured down to the pico-barn level and compared with predictions of different model calculations. For elements above hafnium fragmentation is the dominant reaction mechanism which creates the new isotopes, whereas fission plays a dominant role for the production of the new isotopes up to thulium.
The authors assessed the natural course of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) in 108 patients who were not treated with canalith repositioning procedure. The average number of days from ...onset to remission of positional vertigo in patients with posterior canal BPPV (P-BPPV) (39 days) was longer than in those with horizontal canal BPPV (H-BPPV) (16 days). The ratio of patients with H-BPPV to those with BPPV was 33%.
The systemic use of steroids and habitual alcohol intake are two major causative factors in the development of idiopathic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). To examine any interaction between ...oral corticosteroid use and alcohol intake on the risk of ONFH, we conducted a hospital-based case-control study of 71 cases with ONFH (mean age 45 years (20 to 79)) and 227 matched controls (mean age 47 years (18 to 79)). Alcohol intake was positively associated with ONFH among all subjects: the adjusted odds ratio (OR) of subjects with ≥ 3032 drink-years was 3.93 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18 to 13.1) compared with never-drinkers. When stratified by steroid use, the OR of such drinkers was 11.1 (95% CI 1.30 to 95.5) among those who had never used steroids, but 1.10 (95% CI 0.21 to 4.79) among those who had. When we assessed any interaction based on a two-by-two table of alcohol and steroid use, the OR of those non-drinkers who did use steroids was markedly elevated (OR 31.5) compared with users of neither. However, no further increase in OR was noted for the effect of using both (OR 31.6). We detected neither a multiplicative nor an additive interaction (p for multiplicative interaction 0.19; synergy index 0.95), suggesting that the added effect of alcohol may be trivial compared with the overwhelming effect of steroids in the development of ONFH.
1) to compare the QIAreachTM QuantiFERON-TB (QIAreach QFT) vs. QuantiFERON®-TB Gold Plus assay (QFT-Plus) to detect tuberculosis (TB) infection; 2) to evaluate diagnostic sensitivity of QIAreach QFT ...using active TB as surrogate for TB infection; 3) to preliminarily evaluate QIAreach QFT in immunocompromised individuals.
QIAreach QFT measures the level of interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in plasma specimens from blood stimulated by ESAT-6 and CFP-10 peptides in one blood collection tube (equivalent to the TB2 tube of the QFT-Plus). QIAreach QFT was applied to plasma samples from 41 patients with pulmonary TB and from 42 healthy or low-TB-risk individuals.
Sensitivity and specificity of QIAreach QFT vs. QFT-Plus were 100% (41/41) and 97.6% (41/42), respectively; overall concordance was 98.8% (82/83). All samples were measured within 20 min. The time to result of each sample was significantly correlated with IFN-γ level with a natural logarithmic scale (r = -0.913, p < 0.001). Seven cases in the active TB group were immunocompromised (CD4 <200/μL) and tested positive by QIAreach QFT.
QIAreach QFT provides an objective readout with a minimum blood sample volume (1 mL/subject), potentially being a useful point-of-care screening test for TB infection in high-TB-burden, low-resource countries and for immunocompromised patients.
Unbound states in C17 were investigated via one-neutron removal from a C18 beam at an energy of 245 MeV/nucleon on a carbon target. The energy spectrum of C17, above the single-neutron decay ...threshold, was reconstructed using invariant mass spectroscopy from the measured momenta of the C16 fragment and neutron, and was found to exhibit resonances at Er=0.52(2), 0.77(2), 1.36(1), 1.91(1), 2.22(3) and 3.20(1) MeV. The resonance at Er=0.77(2) MeV Ex=1.51(3) MeV was provisionally assigned as the second 5/2+ state. The two resonances at Er=1.91(1) and 3.20(1) MeV Ex=2.65(2) and 3.94(2) MeV were identified, through comparison of the energies, cross sections and momentum distributions with shell-model and eikonal reaction calculations, as p-shell hole states with spin-parities 1/21− and 3/21−, respectively. A detailed comparison was made with the results obtained using a range of shell-model interactions. The YSOX shell-model Hamiltonian, the cross-shell part of which is based on the monopole-based universal interaction, was found to provide a very good description of the present results and those for the neighbouring odd-A carbon isotopes – in particular for the negative parity cross-shell states.
We study the excitation spectroscopy of few-electron parallel coupled double quantum dots (DQDs). By applying a finite source drain voltage to a DQD, the first excited states observed in ...nonequilibrium charging diagrams can be classified into two kinds in terms of the total effective electron number in the DQD, assuming a core filling. When there are an odd (even) number of electrons, a one- (two-) electron antibonding (triplet) state is observed as the first excited state. On the other hand, at a larger source drain voltage, we observe higher excited states where additional single-particle excited levels are involved. Eventually, we identify the excited states with a calculation using the Hubbard model and, in particular, we elucidate the quadruplet state, which is normally forbidden by the spin blockade caused by the selection rule.
Recognition of shunted pouches dural arteriovenous fistula allows us to treat the disease effectively by selective embolization of the pouches at first. However, the shunted pouches in ...transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas have not been well-documented. Our aim was to evaluate the angioarchitecture of transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas, including the frequency and location of shunted pouches and their feeding arteries. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-five consecutive cases of TSS-DAVFs that underwent rotational angiography and transvenous embolization between 2008 and 2011 were reviewed. Multiplanar reformatted images of rotational angiography and selective angiography were reviewed with a particular focus on the shunted pouches.
All 25 cases showed SPs, with numbers ranging from 1 to 4 pouches (mean, 2.35). The SPs were located at the transverse-sigmoid junction in 16, close to the vein of Labbé in 9, at the dorsal-to-sigmoid sinus in 9, inferior to the sigmoid sinus in 6, at the sigmoid-jugular junction in 5, and inferior to the transverse sinus or the sinus confluence in 14. The SP at the sigmoid sinus was frequently fed by the jugular branch of the ascending pharyngeal artery and the stylomastoid artery. The SP at the transverse-sigmoid junction and the vein of Labbé was fed by the petrosal/petrosquamous and posterior branches of the middle meningeal artery and the transosseous branches of the occipital artery. The SP inferior to the transverse sinus and the sinus confluence was fed by the transosseous branches of the occipital artery and the posterior meningeal artery. All cases were successfully treated by transvenous embolization with sinus packing (n = 13) or selective embolization of the SP (n = 12).
The presence of SP is a common angioarchitecture of TSS-DAVFs. Identification of the SPs would be useful for their treatment.
Nuclei in the vicinity of 78Ni are important benchmarks for nuclear structure, which can reveal changes in the shell structure far from stability. Spectroscopy of the odd-odd isotope 78Cu was ...performed for the first time in an experiment with the EURICA setup at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN Nishina Center. Excited states in the neutron-rich isotope were populated following the β decay of 78Ni produced by in-flight fission and separated by the BigRIPS separator. A level scheme based on the analysis of γ−γ coincidences is presented. Tentative spin and parity assignments were made when possible based on the β-decay feeding intensities and γ-decay properties of the excited states. Time correlations between β and γ decay show clear indications of an isomeric state with a half-life of 3.8(4) ms. Large-scale Monte Carlo shell-model calculations were performed using the A3DA-m interaction and a valence space comprising the full fp shell and the 1g9/2 and 2d5/2 orbitals for both protons and neutrons. The comparison of the experimental results with the shell-model calculations allows interpreting the excited states in terms of spin multiplets arising from the proton-neutron interaction. The results provide further insight into the evolution of the proton single-particle orbitals as a function of neutron number, and quantitative information about the proton-neutron interaction outside the doubly magic 78Ni core.
