Disordered eating behaviors are prevalent in Mexican-American college-enrolled women and contribute to compromised physical and psychological health. Although disordered eating behaviors are ...multi-determined, few studies have examined individual difference factors that contribute to disordered eating behaviors in Mexican women beyond acculturation. Evidence suggests that individual differences in the constellation of identities may be an important factor influencing the disordered eating behaviors. We hypothesized that individual differences in the collection of identities (self-schemas) increases susceptibility to defining oneself as fat (fat self-schema) and contribute to disordered eating behaviors over time in Mexican American college women. A 12-month longitudinal design was used to measure the level of disordered eating behaviors at 5 points over 12 months in 477 Mexican American women. Identity properties (i.e., positive self-schemas, negative self-schemas, fat self-schema) were measured at baseline. Controlling for relevant covariates, latent growth curve models showed that Mexican American women with few positive and many negative self-schemas were more likely to define themselves as fat, which in turn, predicted purging and fasting/restricting behaviors across the year. However, identity properties were not predictive of binge eating and excessive exercise episodes. Interventions focused on development of positive self-schemas that reflect areas of interest and competence and the revision of negative self-schemas may protect against purging and fasting/restricting in Mexican American college-enrolled women.
It has been proposed that neuronal populations in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) robustly encode task-relevant information through an interplay with the ventral tegmental area (VTA). Yet, the precise ...computation underlying such functional interaction remains elusive. Here, we conducted simultaneous recordings of single-unit activity in PFC and VTA of rats performing a GO/NoGO task. We found that mutual information between stimuli and neural activity increases in the PFC as soon as stimuli are presented. Notably, it is the activity of putative dopamine neurons in the VTA that contributes critically to enhance information coding in the PFC. The higher the activity of these VTA neurons, the better the conditioned stimuli are encoded in the PFC.
Genus Quercus is a well-known source for its polyphenolic content and important biological activity. Plants belonging to the Quercus genus were traditionally used in asthma, inflammatory diseases, ...wound healing, acute diarrhea, and hemorrhoid. Our work intended to study the polyphenolic profile of the Q. coccinea (QC) leaves and to assess the protective activity of its 80% aqueous methanol extract (AME) against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) in mice. Together, the potential molecular mechanism was investigated. Nineteen polyphenolic compounds (1–18), including tannins, flavone, and flavonol glycosides. Phenolic acids and aglycones were purified and identified from the AME of QC leaves. Treatment with AME of QC showed an anti-inflammatory effect evidenced by a remarkable decline in the count of white blood cells and neutrophils which was in harmony with decreasing the levels of high mobility group box-1, nuclear factor kappa B, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin 1 beta. In addition, the antioxidant activity of QC was documented through the significant reduction in malondialdehyde level and elevation of reduced glutathione level and superoxide dismutase activity. Furthermore, the mechanism involved in the pulmonary protective effect of QC involved the downregulation of the TLR4/MyD88 pathway. The AME of QC showed a protective effect against LPS-induced ALI through the powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities which are linked to its abundancy with polyphenols.

Few studies have examined the prevalence of food intake difficulties and their associated factors among residents with dementia in long-term care facilities in Taiwan. The purpose of the study was to ...identify the best cutoff point for the Chinese Feeding Difficulty Index (Ch-FDI), which evaluates the prevalence of food intake difficulties and recognizes factors associated with eating behaviors in residents with dementia.
A cross-sectional design was adopted. In total, 213 residents with dementia in long-term care facilities in Taiwan were recruited and participated in this study. The prevalence rate of food intake difficulties as measured by the Chinese Feeding Difficulty Index (Ch-FDI) was 44.6%. Factors associated with food intake difficulties during lunch were the duration of institutionalization (beta = 0.176), the level of activities of daily living-feeding (ADL-Q1) (beta = -0.235), and the length of the eating time (beta = 0.416). Associated factors during dinner were the illuminance level (beta = -0.204), sound volume level (beta = 0.187), ADL-Q1 (beta = -0.177), and eating time (beta = 0.395).
Food intake difficulties may potentially be associated with multiple factors including physical function and the dining environment according to the 45% prevalence rate among dementia residents in long-term care facilities.
Cue-induced cocaine craving is a major cause of relapse in abstinent addicts. In rats, cue-induced craving progressively intensifies (incubates) during withdrawal from extended-access cocaine ...self-administration. After ~1 month of withdrawal, incubated craving is mediated by Ca(2+)-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) that accumulate in the nucleus accumbens (NAc). We found that decreased mGluR1 surface expression in the NAc preceded and enabled CP-AMPAR accumulation. Thus, restoring mGluR1 transmission by administering repeated injections of an mGluR1 positive allosteric modulator (PAM) prevented CP-AMPAR accumulation and incubation, whereas blocking mGluR1 transmission at even earlier withdrawal times accelerated CP-AMPAR accumulation. In studies conducted after prolonged withdrawal, when CP-AMPAR levels and cue-induced craving are high, we found that systemic administration of an mGluR1 PAM attenuated the expression of incubated craving by reducing CP-AMPAR transmission in the NAc to control levels. These results suggest a strategy in which recovering addicts could use a systemically active compound to protect against cue-induced relapse.
Abstract
Context
Total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) is a definitive management for intractable pain in patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP). Islet autotransplantation ...(IAT) allows for the preservation of beta cells to prevent complications of long-term diabetes.
Objective
Our study follows TPIAT recipients for up to 12 years to determine the efficacy of the procedure completed with an off-site islet isolation facility.
Methods
Patient demographics, mixed meal tolerance test measures, glycosylated hemoglobin, insulin requirements, and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance values were collected prior to surgery and at the most recent follow-up assessment.
Results
Forty-four patients (median age, 46.0 years; range, 20-78 years) underwent TPIAT for CP. At an overall median follow-up time of 845.5 days (range, 195-4470 days) 8 patients were insulin independent and 36 patients were insulin dependent. At the most recent follow-up time point, islet yield per kilogram was the strongest indicator of insulin independence. Homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance values were comparable between insulin independent and dependent cohorts.
Conclusions
Our long-term follow-up data suggest that IAT can effectively reduce insulin requirements and improve postoperative glycemic control.
Dendritic arbor architecture profoundly impacts neuronal connectivity and function, and aberrant dendritic morphology characterizes neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we identify the adhesion-GPCR ...BAI1 as an important regulator of dendritic arborization. BAI1 loss from mouse or rat hippocampal neurons causes dendritic hypertrophy, whereas BAI1 overexpression precipitates dendrite retraction. These defects specifically manifest as dendrites transition from growth to stability. BAI1-mediated growth arrest is independent of its Rac1-dependent synaptogenic function. Instead, BAI1 couples to the small GTPase RhoA, driving late RhoA activation in dendrites coincident with growth arrest. BAI1 loss lowers RhoA activation and uncouples it from dendrite dynamics, causing overgrowth. None of BAI1's known downstream effectors mediates BAI1-dependent growth arrest. Rather, BAI1 associates with the Rho-GTPase regulatory protein Bcr late in development and stimulates its cryptic RhoA-GEF activity, which functions together with its Rac1-GAP activity to terminate arborization. Our results reveal a late-acting signaling pathway mediating a key transition in dendrite development.
We evaluated the utility of real-time CGM for titrating intravenous (IV) insulin via a validated institutional computerized insulin infusion (CII) algorithm in the CV-ICU. We used a hybrid approach ...of combining CGM with periodic point-of-care blood glucose (POC-BG) tests to validate the continued accuracy of CGM. We also surveyed nurses on this care change. Dexcom G6 CGMs were applied to 61 post-surgical patients with hyperglycemia (34% with diabetes) receiving IV insulin. CGM values were validated with POC-BG every(Q) 1-2 h per the CII protocol. Once validated (i.e., within 20% of POC-BG values if BG ≥100 mg/dL or within 20 mg/dL if BG <100 mg/dl), sensor values were then used to titrate IV insulin doses per CII algorithm. POC-BG checks were then reduced to Q6h validation. Among 857 paired POC-BG and CGM values analyzed, the mean and median average relative difference between POC-BG and CGM values were 13.2% and 9.8%, respectively. 99.6% of paired CGM and POC-BG were in Zone A and B of the Clarke Error Grid (Figure). Thirty nurse respondents found CGM very or quite convenient (n=28; 93%) and favored it over POC-BG testing (n=28; 93%). This pilot study demonstrates that using CGM via a hybrid approach for CII titration protocol is feasible, has high accuracy, and higher nursing convenience.

Meditation practice alters intrinsic resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in the default mode network (DMN). However, little is known regarding the effects of meditation on other ...resting-state networks. The aim of current study was to investigate the effects of meditation experience and meditation-state functional connectivity (msFC) on multiple resting-state networks (RSNs). Meditation practitioners (MPs) performed two 5-minute scans, one during rest, one while meditating. A meditation naïve control group (CG) underwent one resting-state scan. Exploratory regression analyses of the relations between years of meditation practice and rsFC and msFC were conducted. During resting-state, MP as compared to CG exhibited greater rsFC within the Dorsal Attention Network (DAN). Among MP, meditation, as compared to rest, strengthened FC between the DAN and DMN and Salience network whereas it decreased FC between the DAN, dorsal medial PFC, and insula. Regression analyses revealed positive correlations between the number of years of meditation experience and msFC between DAN, thalamus, and anterior parietal sulcus, whereas negative correlations between DAN, lateral and superior parietal, and insula. These findings suggest that the practice of meditation strengthens FC within the DAN as well as strengthens the coupling between distributed networks that are involved in attention, self-referential processes, and affective response.

Alcohol use is considered less acceptable for women than men in the Mexican culture. However, recent studies of Mexican-American (MA) women show that prevalence and rates of alcohol use are ...escalating, particularly in those with high acculturation to Western standards. Building on recent studies that demonstrated that drinking-related identities (self-schemas) are important predictors of alcohol use in college populations, this secondary data analysis investigated the association between acculturation, MA cultural values, and acculturative stress, drinking-related self-schemas and heavy drinking over time in college-enrolled MA women. Data were drawn from a 12-month longitudinal study of self-schemas and health-risk behaviors in 477 college-enrolled MA women. Drinking-related self-schemas, acculturation, MA cultural values and acculturative stress were measured at baseline, and heavy drinking was measured at baseline, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. Thirty-six percent of women had a nondrinker self-schema but only 3% had a drinker self-schema. Higher spirituality was protective against heavy drinking, and this effect can be partially explained by presence of a non-drinker self-schema. Interventions that emphasize the personal relevance of being a non-drinker and support the importance of spirituality may help to prevent heavy drinking in MA college women.
