Error management culture and withdrawal behaviors can be related within the framework of job satisfaction. While job satisfaction is affected by error management culture, it affects withdrawal ...behaviors. On the other hand, each school has its own culture and teachers' perceptions can be differentiated in terms of school level. This study examined teachers' perception of error management culture and psychological withdrawal behaviors in terms of school level and determined the relationship between them. It was conducted with a correlational research model. The data was collected from a total of 440 teachers working in public schools in Türkiye, selected by convenient sampling. In this study, “Error Management Culture Scale in Schools” and “Psychological Withdrawal Behaviors Scale” were used to determine teachers' views. The findings reveal that according to the school level variable, teachers' perceptions of error management culture and psychological withdrawal behaviors in schools differ significantly. The results of error management culture and psychological withdrawal were against the teachers working in high schools. There is a low-level, negative significant relationship between error management culture and psychological withdrawal behaviors. The current study suggests that an effective error management culture in schools contributes to increased job satisfaction and motivation and reduces the withdrawal behaviors of teachers.
This paper suggests that distributed leadership is a vital first step in making schools flexible enough to respond to new pressures. However, it is then argued that distributed leadership per se does ...not necessarily imply a commitment to a particular stance on issues of social justice, such as equality, but rather that this can only flow from leaders becoming culturally responsive to the diverse traditions and needs of the changing populations of their schools. We define this combination as ‘distributed culturally responsive leadership’. The second part of the paper attempts to illustrate this argument by closely examining the philosophy and actions of a particular principal who is regarded as an exemplar of good practice. The methodology used in the school case study is described and, finally, we provide a presentation and analysis of the data followed by a discussion of the research findings.
Current approaches to the regulation of schools in most jurisdictions tend to combine elements of external inspection with systems of internal self-evaluation. An increasingly important aspect of the ...theory and practice of both, but particularly the latter, revolves around the role of other actors, primarily parents and students, in the process. Using literature review and documentary analysis as the research method, this article explores the research literature from many countries around the concerns of schools and teachers about giving a more powerful voice to parents and pupils. Then, focusing on Ireland, this article tries to clarify three things, official policy concerning stakeholder voice in school self-evaluation and decision making, the efforts by schools to implement this policy and the response to date of school leaders and teachers to this rather changed environment. Using Hart’s ladder of genuine, as opposed to token, participation, it is argued that policy mandating parental and student involvement has evolved significantly, that schools have responded positively and that there is little evidence, as yet, of teacher concern or resistance. This response is explained by the low stakes and improvement-focused education environment; the controlled, structured and simplified nature of the self-evaluation process; and the limited extent of parental and student participation in decision making.
The purpose of this paper, which is part of a three-year EU Erasmus+-funded study titled ‘Distributed Evaluation and Planning in Schools’ (DEAPS), is to provide an analysis of policies, structures, ...processes, supports and barriers that exist to enable or inhibit the involvement of students and parents in school evaluation in four European countries (Belgium, Ireland, Portugal and Turkey). Document analysis was used for this study and some 348 peer-reviewed articles, and 28 national and transnational policy documents were included in the analysis. Based on this review it would be reasonable to suggest that the student/parent voice agenda around evaluation in schools remains, by and large, aspirational. It is extolled in policy but in practice is mainly tokenistic with very little evidence of impact on the work of schools. In light of this, it is argued that government and school-level policies and strategies need to be reconsidered to enhance students’ and parents’ engagement in school evaluation. As a first step, significant further empirical research on the limitations on and conditions necessary for stakeholder voice in education is required.
Higher education institutions are eager to attract more qualified students in a competitive environment. In this direction, they strive to increase the commitment of the students to the university by ...improving the quality of the offered service. Thus, students continue their higher education with great satisfaction and talk positively about their universities and recommend it to the next generations. This research aimed to identify the effect undergraduate students’ perceived quality of service had on their commitment. A mixed methods research methodology with an explanatory sequential design was used. The research sample composed of 1,782 students, and the quantitative data were collected through scales developed by the researchers. The qualitative data were collected through a semi-structured interview and critical incidents technique forms. The findings have pointed out that the quality of service in higher education positively affects student commitment; as the perception of service quality improves, student commitment increases. Students’ commitment to the university is mainly affected by the quality of education, the image of the university/faculty, and the quality of facilities. While research related to service quality and student commitment exists in the literature, this research has pointed out the underlying reasons for students’ commitment and perceptions of university services with direct quotations. Students’ views should be taken into consideration by the management to improve quality in the university. This research is limited to public university undergraduate students’; future researchers can conduct studies with private university students and state their findings.
Students have become highly critical and analytical in selecting the higher education institution they would like to study at. It has become important for higher education institutions to be ...preferred by such prospective students as well as ensuring the commitment and retention of their current students. Universities, as the most important representatives of higher education institutions, are evaluated directly and indirectly by their stakeholders regarding the quality of the services they provide. Service quality and satisfaction surveys based on these evaluations can have a wide variety of implications on institutional rankings, preferability, financial policies, etc. This study aims to develop a scale specific to Turkish Higher Education Institutions to determine the quality of services offered in higher education according to the satisfaction perceptions of undergraduate students. Accordingly, the first draft of a 53-item seven-dimensional five-point Likert type scale was created. The piloting version of the scale was applied to a total of 500 undergraduate students, of whom 346 were female and 149 male, who were continuing their studies in 15 faculties of a public university in Turkey. Further, particular care was taken to include students who were in their second year or higher seniority at the university so that they would have had sufficient time to benefit from the services offered. A 29-item structure with three sub-dimensions was revealed as a result of the exploratory factor analysis performed. The sub-dimensions were named as "Academic services", "Administrative services", and "Campus facilities". The findings of the confirmatory factor analysis conducted on 1782 participants support the structure validity of the scale. Based on the findings, the Service Quality in Higher Education Scale has been determined to be a highly reliable and valid scale that can be used to specifically measure the quality of services offered in higher education.
School self-evaluation based on multiple data sources has been used to evaluate the quality of education at schools. This study aims to reveal the state of the education process, health, safety, ...relations and communication, and participation in management at school. The study is conducted with a case study design, in a public secondary school. The researchers developed a School Self-Evaluation Model Supporting School Development and applied it to this study. In this study, two study groups were formed through purposeful sampling. Data was obtained from students, parents, teachers, and school administrators during the quantitative phase of the study, and these stakeholders were interviewed during the qualitative phase. In addition, while directing the implementation of their planned approach at the school, the authors conducted observations. The materials used to support the quantitative and qualitative data were also evaluated, and possible indicators were identified. According to the research findings, the stakeholders had good perceptions of the education processes in the school. Furthermore, the views of the stakeholders based on health, safety, relationships, and communication, participation in school management are also generally positive. However, it has been determined that there are some problems in student nutrition services, student relations, and participation in school management. All told, the stakeholders have generally satisfied with the education process at school. These findings have pointed out that school self-evaluation is very applicable for the constant improvement of schools based on various evidence.
