This paper details single-crystalline silicon (SCS) direct contact radio frequency microelectromechanical systems (RF MEMS) switch designed and fabricated using an SiOG (silicon-on-glass) substrate, ...so as to obtain higher fabrication and performance uniformity compared with a conventional metal switch. The mechanical and electrical performances of the fabricated silicon switch have been tested. In comparison with a conventional metallic MEMS switch, we can obtain higher productivity and uniformity by using SCS, because it has very low stresses and superior thermal characteristics as a structural material of the switch. Also, by using the SiOG substrate instead of an SOI substrate, fabrication cost can be significantly reduced. The proposed switch is fabricated on a coplanar waveguide (CPW) and actuated by electrostatic force. The designed chip size is 1.05 mm/spl times/0.72 mm. Measured pull-in voltage and actuation voltage were 19 V and 26 V, respectively. Eighteen identical switches taken randomly throughout the wafer showed average and standard deviation of the measured pull-in voltage of 19.1 and 1.5 V, respectively. The RF characteristics of the fabricated switch from dc to 30 GHz have been measured. The isolation and insertion loss measured on the four identical samples were -38 to -39 dB and -0.18 to -0.2 dB at 2 GHz, respectively. Forming damping holes on the upper electrode leads to a relatively fast switching speed. Measured ON and OFF time were 25 and 13 /spl mu/s, respectively. In the switch OFF state, self-actuation does not happen up to the input power of 34 dBm. The measured holding power of the fabricated switch was 31 dBm. Stiction problem was not observed after 10/sup 8/ cycles of repeated actuation, but the contact resistance varied about 0.5-1 /spl Omega/ from the initial value.
We report on charged hadron production in deuteron-gold reactions at roots(NN) = 200 GeV. Our measurements in the deuteron direction cover 1.4<eta<2.2, referred to as forward rapidity, and in the ...gold direction -2.0<eta<-1.4, referred to as backward rapidity, and a transverse momentum range p(T)=0.5-4.0 GeV/c. We compare the relative yields for different deuteron-gold collision centrality classes. We observe a suppression relative to binary collision scaling at forward rapidity, sensitive to low momentum fraction (x) partons in the gold nucleus, and an enhancement at backward rapidity, sensitive to high momentum fraction partons in the gold nucleus.
We present a measurement of the double longitudinal spin asymmetry in inclusive pi(0) production in polarized proton-proton collisions at roots=200 GeV. The data were taken at the Relativistic Heavy ...Ion Collider with average beam polarizations of 0.27. The measurements are the first in a program to study the longitudinal spin structure of the proton, using strongly interacting probes, at collider energies. The asymmetry is presented for transverse momenta 1-5 GeV/c at midrapidity, where next-to-leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculations well describe the unpolarized cross section. The observed asymmetry is small and is compared to a NLO pQCD calculation with a range of polarized gluon distributions.
Transverse momentum spectra of electrons from Au+Au collisions at roots(NN) = 130 GeV have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The spectra ...show an excess above the background from photon conversions and light hadron decays. The electron signal is consistent with that expected from semileptonic decays of charm. The yield of the electron signal dN(e)/dy for p(T) > 0.8 GeV/c is 0.025 +/- 0.004(stat) +/- 0.010( syst) in central collisions, and the corresponding charm cross section is 380 +/- 60(stat) +/- 200(syst ) mub per binary nucleon-nucleon collision.
Two-pion correlations in roots(NN) = 130 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC have been measured over a broad range of pair transverse momentum k(T) by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. The k(T) dependent ...transverse radii are similar to results from heavy-ion collisions at roots(NN) = 4.1 , 4.9, and 17.3 GeV, whereas the longitudinal radius increases monotonically with beam energy. The ratio of the outwards to sidewards transverse radii (R-out/R-side) is consistent with unity and independent of k(T) .
We present results on the measurement of Lambda and (&ULambda;) over bar production in Au+Au collisions at roots(NN)=130 GeV with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The ...transverse momentum spectra were measured for minimum bias and for the 5% most central events. The (&ULambda;) over bar/Lambda ratios are constant as a function of p(T) and the number of participants. The measured net Lambda density is significantly larger than predicted by models based on hadronic strings (e.g., HIJING) but in approximate agreement with models which include the gluon-junction mechanism.
National surveillance for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) began in the Republic of Korea (ROK) in 1996. Surveillance programmes changed overtime to comply with the guidelines of the World ...Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). Bovine spongiform encephalopathy was designated as a notifiable disease in 1997. From July 2008, the BSE surveillance programme was intensified to test cattle in designated high-risk populations more effectively. New measures included the compulsory testing of all non-ambulatory cattle at abattoirs, and encouraging the testing of all dead cattle examined and recorded under the Mutual Aid Insurance Scheme (fallen stock). In addition, there was a vigorous search for animals suspected of being clinically infected. As a result, a total of 426,919 OIE points were achieved over a period of seven consecutive years to the end of October 2009. This enabled the submission of a successful application to the OIE in 2010 for recognition of the ROK's BSE disease status as being one of controlled risk, in accordance with Chapter 11.5. of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code.
SUMMARY
The combination of allograft limbal transplantation (ALT) and amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) has been applied in the treatment of severe ocular surface diseases. The beneficial ...effect of this combination has been thought to result from possible immunosuppressive ability of amniotic membrane (AM). However, the mechanisms of any such ability remain unknown. In this study, we investigated whether human AM has the ability to suppress allo‐reactive T cell responses in vitro. For mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR), lymphocytes isolated from lymph nodes of C57BL/6 mice (Mls1b, Vβ6+) were cultured with irradiated splenocytes from DBA/2 mice (Mls1a, Vβ6−) with or without human AM. For carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester (CFSE) experiments, responder lymph node cells were labelled with a stable intracellular fluorescent dye and cultured with irradiated stimulator cells. The ratio of responder Vβ6+ T cells was then determined by FACS analysis, and the division profiles of responder Vβ6+ T cells were analysed by CFSE content. Furthermore, Th1 and Th2 cytokine synthesis by allo‐reactive T cells in MLR culture supernatants was determined by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Addition of AM to the MLR culture resulted in the significant inhibition of thymidine incorporation compared with control culture lacking AM. The population of responder CD4+Vβ6+ T cells was significantly reduced in the AM‐treated culture in comparison to control. CFSE analysis revealed less division and lower proliferation of responder CD4+Vβ6+ T cells in cultures with AM than without. In addition, allo‐rective T cell synthesis of both Th1 (IL‐2 and IFNγ) and Th2 (IL‐6 and IL‐10) type cytokine was significantly decreased in the presence of AM. These results indicate that human AM has the ability to suppress allo‐reactive T cells in vitro. This inhibitory effect likely contributes to the success of the ALT‐AMT combination.
Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a transcription factor that has a central role in the regulation of tumour metabolism under hypoxic conditions. HIF-1α stimulates glycolytic energy production ...and promotes tumour growth. Sirtuins are NAD(+)-dependent protein deacetylases that regulate cellular metabolism in response to stress; however, their involvement in the hypoxic response remains unclear. In this study, it is shown that SIRT2-mediated deacetylation of HIF-1α regulates its stability in tumour cells. SIRT2 overexpression destabilized HIF-1α under hypoxic conditions, whereas HIF-1α protein levels were high in SIRT2-deficient cells. SIRT2 directly interacted with HIF-1α and deacetylated Lys709 of HIF-1α. Deacetylation of HIF-1α by SIRT2 resulted in increased binding affinity for prolyl hydroxylase 2, a key regulator of HIF-1α stability, and increased HIF-1α hydroxylation and ubiquitination. Moreover, a pharmacological agent that increased the intracellular NAD(+)/NADH ratio led to the degradation of HIF-1α by increasing SIRT2-mediated deacetylation and subsequent hydroxylation. These findings suggest that SIRT2-mediated HIF-1α deacetylation is critical for the destablization of HIF-1α and the hypoxic response of tumour cells.
This letter presents a novel switchable composite right/left-handed (S-CRLH) metamaterial transmission line (TL) using MEMS switches. The proposed TL is based on a general CRLH TL with switchable ...capacitors and switchable shunt inductive stubs. The LH mode of the S-CRLH TL ranges from 7.5 GHz to 10.4 GHz. In these frequencies, the S-CRLH TL is able to switch from a negative phase response (phase lag) to a positive phase response (phase lead), or vice versa. This phase modulation can be obtained through a voltage, due to the use of MEMS switches. The size of the fabricated S-CRLH TL, including bias networks, is 4941 mum times 2076 mum and is compact thanks to the LH mode.
