The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) is a national surveillance system that has been assessing the health and nutritional status of Koreans since 1998. Based on the ...National Health Promotion Act, the surveys have been conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC). This nationally representative cross-sectional survey includes approximately 10 000 individuals each year as a survey sample and collects information on socioeconomic status, health-related behaviours, quality of life, healthcare utilization, anthropometric measures, biochemical and clinical profiles for non-communicable diseases and dietary intakes with three component surveys: health interview, health examination and nutrition survey. The health interview and health examination are conducted by trained staff members, including physicians, medical technicians and health interviewers, at a mobile examination centre, and dieticians' visits to the homes of the study participants are followed up. KNHANES provides statistics for health-related policies in Korea, which also serve as the research infrastructure for studies on risk factors and diseases by supporting over 500 publications. KCDC has also supported researchers in Korea by providing annual workshops for data users. KCDC has published the Korea Health Statistics each year, and microdata are publicly available through the KNHANES website (http://knhanes.cdc.go.kr).

Introduction
We aimed to determine whether there are race/ethnic and geographic differences in bone mineral density by fracture history in men aged 65 years and older.
Method
The datasets included the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study (5,342 White, 243 African-American, 190 Asian, and 126 Hispanic), MrOS Hong Kong (1,968 Hong Kong Chinese), Tobago Bone Health Study (641 Afro-Caribbean), Namwon Study (1,834 Korean), and Dong-gu Study (2,057 Korean). The two Korean cohorts were combined.
Results
The prevalence of self-reported non-traumatic fracture was US white, 17.1 %; Afro-Caribbean, 5.5 %; US African-American, 15.1 %; US Hispanic, 13.7 %; US Asian, 10.5 %; Hong Kong Chinese, 5.6 %, and Korean, 5.1 %. The mean differences in hip and lumbar spine BMD between subjects with fracture and without fracture were statistically significant in all cohorts except US African American and US Asian men. There was a significant race/ethnic interaction for lumbar spine BMD by fracture status (
p
for interaction = 0.02), which was driven by the small number of Hispanic men. There was no interaction for femoral neck or total hip BMD. There were no significant race/ethnic differences in the odds ratio of fracture by BMD.
Conclusions
Low BMD was associated with a higher prevalence of fracture in all cohorts and the magnitude of the BMD differences by fracture status was similar across groups suggesting homogeneity in the BMD–fracture relationship among older men.

Ni have been studied at two different beam energies (32 and 52 MeV/nucleon) in the intermediate energy regime. The present work is focused on the isospin diffusion effects in semiperipheral and peripheral collisions. A stronger isospin equilibration is found at 32 MeV/nucleon than at 52 MeV/nucleon, as expected due to a shorter projectile-target interaction time in the latter case.
In a 2018 survey, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified microbial contamination in 42 (49%) of 85 unopened tattoo and permanent makeup (PMU) inks purchased from 13 manufacturers in the ...US between November 2015 and April 2016. To confirm the results of our previous survey, we evaluated the level of microbial contamination in an additional 27 samples from 10 manufacturers from September 2017 to December 2017, including 21 unopened tattoo and PMU inks which were selected based on our previous survey results and 6 ink diluents that were not previously analysed. Aerobic plate count and enrichment culture methods from the FDA’s Bacteriological Analytical Manual revealed 11 (52%) out of 21 inks, from six manufacturers, were contaminated with micro‐organisms, with contamination levels up to 3·6 × 108 CFU per gram, consistent with our previous survey results. We identified 25 bacterial strains belonging to nine genera and 19 species. Strains of Bacillus sp. (11 strains, 44%) were dominant, followed by Paenibacillus sp. (5 strains, 20%). Clinically relevant strains, such as Kocuria rhizophila and Oligella ureolytica, were also identified, as similar to the findings in our previous survey. No microbial contamination was detected in any of the six ink diluents.
Significance and Impact of the Study: Risks of infection associated with tattoo and permanent makeup (PMU) inks contaminated with microorganisms continues to be a public health concern. This study confirms the results from our previous study showing that a high portion of tattoo and PMU inks were contaminated with micro‐organisms, including pathogenic bacteria. The results of this survey highlight the safety concerns associated with intradermal injection of microbially contaminated tattoo inks. Furthermore, this study shows the importance of continuously monitoring the levels of microbial contamination of tattoo and PMU inks marketed in the US.
Summary
Two recent genome‐wide association studies have identified that the rs2274223 single‐nucleotide polymorphism inphospholipase C epsilon 1 and the single‐nucleotide polymorphism rs13042395 in ...C20orf54 are involved in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in Chinese populations. We hypothesized that genetic polymorphisms of phospholipase C epsilon 1 and C20orf54 are also associated with ESCC in a Korean population. The rs2274223 and rs13042395 genotyping was performed using high‐resolution melting analysis. The rs2274223 GG genotype was significantly associated with an increased risk of ESCC (odds ratio OR = 1.86, 95% confidence interval CI = 1.08–3.25) compared with the rs2274223 AA genotype. The rs13042395 G allele showed a significantly decreased risk of ESCC in the younger age group (OR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.52–0.97) and no significant association in the older group (OR = 1.19, 95% CI = 0.87–1.62). We observed that the rs2274223 polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of ESCC in this Korean case–control study and that age may modify the association between the rs13042395 polymorphism and the risk of ESCC.
SUMMARY
The aim of this study was to assess whether p53 codon 72 polymorphism is associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer (EC) in South Korea. We conducted a case‐control study ...including 340 patients with EC, and 1700 controls. P53 codon 72 polymorphism was determined by real‐time polymerase chain reaction. The frequencies of p53 codon 72 polymorphisms (Arg/Arg, Arg/Pro, and Pro/Pro) in EC were 39.4%, 45.6%, and 15.0%, respectively; frequencies in the controls were 43.2%, 45.6%, and 11.2%, respectively. Compared with the Arg/Arg genotype, the OR of the Arg/Pro genotype was 1.09 (95% CI = 0.85–1.41) and that of the Pro/Pro genotype was 1.47 (95% CI = 1.02–2.11) for EC overall. When adjusted by age, gender, and smoking status, the OR of the Arg/Pro genotype was 1.24 (95% CI = 0.92–1.67) and that of the Pro/Pro genotype was 1.77 (95% CI = 1.15–2.74) for EC overall. In never‐smokers and ever‐smokers, the OR of the Arg/Pro genotype was 0.59 (95% CI = 0.37–0.95) and 1.39 (95% CI = 1.00–1.91), respectively, and there was a significant difference in the homogeneity test (P= 0.011). We observed that the p53 codon 72 polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of EC in this Korean case‐control study, and smoking status modified the association between the p53 codon 72 polymorphism and the risk of EC.
To further dissect the genetic architecture of colorectal cancer (CRC), we performed whole-genome sequencing of 1,439 cases and 720 controls, imputed discovered sequence variants and Haplotype ...Reference Consortium panel variants into genome-wide association study data, and tested for association in 34,869 cases and 29,051 controls. Findings were followed up in an additional 23,262 cases and 38,296 controls. We discovered a strongly protective 0.3% frequency variant signal at CHD1. In a combined meta-analysis of 125,478 individuals, we identified 40 new independent signals at P < 5 × 10
, bringing the number of known independent signals for CRC to ~100. New signals implicate lower-frequency variants, Krüppel-like factors, Hedgehog signaling, Hippo-YAP signaling, long noncoding RNAs and somatic drivers, and support a role for immune function. Heritability analyses suggest that CRC risk is highly polygenic, and larger, more comprehensive studies enabling rare variant analysis will improve understanding of biology underlying this risk and influence personalized screening strategies and drug development.
The anisotropy parameter (v(2)), the second harmonic of the azimuthal particle distribution, has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au collisions at roots(NN)=200 GeV for identified and ...inclusive charged particle production at central rapidities (eta<0.35) with respect to the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (eta=3-4 ). We observe that the v(2) of mesons falls below that of (anti)baryons for p(T)>2 GeV/c, in marked contrast to the predictions of a hydrodynamical model. A quark-coalescence model is also investigated.
The PHENIX experiment has measured midrapidity transverse momentum spectra (0.4<p(T)<4.0 GeV/c) of single electrons as a function of centrality in Au+Au collisions at roots(NN) = 200 GeV. ...Contributions from photon conversions and Dalitz decays of light neutral mesons are measured by introducing a thin (1.7% X-0) converter into the PHENIX acceptance and are statistically removed. The subtracted nonphotonic electron spectra are primarily due to the semileptonic decays of hadrons containing heavy quarks, mainly charm at lower p(T). For all centralities, the charm production cross section is found to scale with the nuclear overlap function, T-AA. For minimum-bias collisions the charm cross section per binary collision is N-c (c) over bar/T-AA=622+/-57(stat)+/-160(syst) mub.
