Limonium belongs to the family of Plumbaginaceae; it is present in the Mediterranean basin and in Sicily has an endemic distribution, with approximately 40 species exhibiting a great morphological ...variability. The study intended to evaluate the biological potentiality of 14 autochthonous species for ornamental uses in outdoor environment. The compared plants showed different characteristics, both in quality and quantity, of the flowered stems, suggesting different opportunities for a ornamental utilization

Limonium virgatum Willd. (Fam. Plumbaginaceae) occurs in most of the Sicilian areas and is present in soils of different nature (calcareous, calcarenithic, marnous, volcanic, saline, etc.). The aim ...of this trial, based on the study of different environments of this species, was the observation of ex-situ cultivation of ecotypes and the evaluation of ontogenesis responses and of possible ornamental uses. The different accessions showed appreciable bio-productive differences and several potential uses in floriculture
Limonium virgatum Willd. (Fam.
The structural and biological properties of a polyomavirus mutant selected in Friend erythroleukemic cells were investigated. The growth efficiency of this mutant (PyFL78) was compared with that of ...the parental PyA2 strain by a growth competition assay in Friend erythroleukemic and 3T3 (or 3T6) cell lines. The results reveal that PyFL78 displays a cis-acting growth advantage over the PyA2 parental strain in Friend erythroleukemic cells but not in 3T3 or 3T6 cells. This cell-specific cis advantage is shown to be due to modifications within the polyomavirus noncoding regulatory region.
Between 1998 and 2000, four newborns have been observed for laryngeal stridor occurred some hours after birth. Otorhinolaryngologic examinations, as well as cardiac, neuroradiologic and serologic ...investigations have been performed to formulate the diagnosis and verify the etiology. The fiberoptic laryngoscopy showed a bilateral paralysis of the vocal cord in two newborns, a monolateral paralysis of the left vocal cord in another and in the last one, instead, a bilateral cordal hypomobility. The follow-up performed till the age of one year showed a complete remission of the symptomatology in two newborns, respectively in the one with monolateral paralysis and in the other affected by hypomobility of the vocal cords; of the two newborns with bilateral paralysis, instead, one is dead because of Haemophilus Influenzae epiglottitis, three weeks after discharge without physicians' consensus, while in the other patient, affected by lobar holoprosencephaly, it was necessary to perform a tracheotomy because of a severe obstructive apnea. The lobar holoprosencephaly, is a cerebral malformation characterized by the partial separation of the cerebral hemispheres, and it is described for the first time associated with bilateral vocal cords paralysis.
