. Here we investigated the aerodynamic nature of SARS-CoV-2 by measuring viral RNA in aerosols in different areas of two Wuhan hospitals during the outbreak of COVID-19 in February and March 2020. The concentration of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in aerosols that was detected in isolation wards and ventilated patient rooms was very low, but it was higher in the toilet areas used by the patients. Levels of airborne SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the most public areas was undetectable, except in two areas that were prone to crowding; this increase was possibly due to individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 in the crowd. We found that some medical staff areas initially had high concentrations of viral RNA with aerosol size distributions that showed peaks in the submicrometre and/or supermicrometre regions; however, these levels were reduced to undetectable levels after implementation of rigorous sanitization procedures. Although we have not established the infectivity of the virus detected in these hospital areas, we propose that SARS-CoV-2 may have the potential to be transmitted through aerosols. Our results indicate that room ventilation, open space, sanitization of protective apparel, and proper use and disinfection of toilet areas can effectively limit the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in aerosols. Future work should explore the infectivity of aerosolized virus.
Surface sediments of polluted urban rivers can be a reservoir of hydrophobic persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In this study, we comprehensively assessed the contamination of two groups of POPs, ...that is, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), in 173 black-odorous urban rivers in China. Spatial distribution of PCBs and PBDEs showed similar patterns but very different contamination levels in surface sediments, that is, average concentrations of 10.73 and 401.16 ng/g dw for the ∑PCBs and ∑PBDEs, respectively. Tetra-/di-CBs and deca-BDE are major PCBs and PBDEs and accounted for 59.11 and 95.11 wt % of the ∑PCBs and ∑PBDEs, respectively. Compared with the persistence of PBDEs, the EF changes of chiral PCBs together with previous cultivation evidence indicated indigenous bioconversion of PCBs in black-odorous urban rivers, particularly the involvement of uncharacterized Dehalococcoidia in PCB dechlorination. Major PCB sources (and their relative contributions) included pigment/painting (25.36%), e-waste (22.92%), metallurgical industry (13.25%), and e-waste/biological degradation process (10.95%). A risk assessment indicated that exposure of resident organisms in urban river sediments to deca-/penta-BDEs could pose a high ecological risk. This study provides the first insight into the contamination, conversion and ecological risk of PCBs and PBDEs in nationwide polluted urban rivers in China.
Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is a double-stranded DNA virus with the capacity to establish life-long latent infection. During latent infection, the viral genome persists as a ...circular episome that associates with cellular histones and exists as a nonintegrated minichromosome in the nucleus of infected cells. Chromatin structure and epigenetic programming are required for the proper control of viral gene expression and stable maintenance of viral DNA. However, there is still limited knowledge regarding how the host regulates the chromatin structure and maintenance of episomal DNA. Here, we found that the cellular protein structural maintenance of chromosome (SMC) complex SMC5/6 recognizes and associates with the KSHV genome to inhibit its replication. The SMC5/6 complex can bind to the KSHV genome and suppress KSHV gene transcription by condensing the viral chromatin and creating a repressive chromatin structure. Correspondingly, KSHV employs an antagonistic strategy by utilizing the viral protein RTA to degrade the SMC5/6 complex and antagonize the inhibitory effect of this complex on viral gene transcription. Interestingly, this antagonistic mechanism of RTA is evolutionarily conserved among γ-herpesviruses. Our work suggests that the SMC5/6 complex is a new host factor that restricts KSHV replication.
From December 2019, an outbreak of unusual pneumonia was reported in Wuhan with many cases linked to Huanan Seafood Market that sells seafood as well as live exotic animals. We investigated two ...patients who developed acute respiratory syndromes after independent contact history with this market. The two patients shared common clinical features including fever, cough, and multiple ground-glass opacities in the bilateral lung field with patchy infiltration. Here, we highlight the use of a low-input metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) approach on RNA extracted from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). It rapidly identified a novel coronavirus (named 2019-nCoV according to World Health Organization announcement) which was the sole pathogens in the sample with very high abundance level (1.5% and 0.62% of total RNA sequenced). The entire viral genome is 29,881 nt in length (GenBank MN988668 and MN988669, Sequence Read Archive database Bioproject accession PRJNA601736) and is classified into β-coronavirus genus. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that 2019-nCoV is close to coronaviruses (CoVs) circulating in Rhinolophus (Horseshoe bats), such as 98.7% nucleotide identity to partial RdRp gene of bat coronavirus strain BtCoV/4991 (GenBank KP876546, 370 nt sequence of RdRp and lack of other genome sequence) and 87.9% nucleotide identity to bat coronavirus strain bat-SL-CoVZC45 and bat-SL-CoVZXC21. Evolutionary analysis based on ORF1a/1b, S, and N genes also suggests 2019-nCoV is more likely a novel CoV independently introduced from animals to humans.
Random composites of iron particles hosted in porous alumina were prepared from a facile impregnation‐reduction process. Interestingly, when the iron content exceeds the percolation threshold, the ...interconnection of iron particles results in the formation of iron networks. The composites then change from capacitive to inductive and the conductive mechanism changes from hopping conduction to metal‐like conduction. The negative permittivity was attributed to the plasma oscillation of delocalized electrons in iron networks, while the negative permeability could be ascribed to the strong diamagnetic response of current loops in iron networks. The negative permittivity behavior of the iron/alumina composite was analyzed using Drude model. Additionally, the fitting results indicated that the effective plasma frequency of the iron/alumina composite is much lower than bulk iron. Further investigations show that, the iron content and reduction temperature can easily tune the amplitude and frequency ranges of the negative permittivity and permeability. Moreover, the negative permittivity region and the negative permeability region can be pushed to the same frequency region by adjusting the iron content and reduction temperature. The impregnation‐reduction process opens a new way for the realization of tunable negative permittivity and permeability in random composites, and has great potential for the preparation of new types of double negative materials.

Patients with AMI usually present with the specific changes for electrocardiogram (ECG) and biomarkers of cardiac injury. Here, we present a rare case with chest pain and normal ECG and biomarkers of ...cardiac injury. Emergent coronary angiography revealed an occlusion of proximal left anterior descending coronary artery. The patient was diagnosed with AMI, and his symptom relieved after implantation of drug‐eluting stents. Caution should be exercised for the exclusion of AMI in patients with chest pain and both normal ECG and biomarkers of cardiac injury.
AMI with normal ECG and biomarkers of cardiac injury is exceedingly rare. The clinical manifestations of AMI were complex and varied, especially that the patients with atypical AMI were increasing in clinical practice. Caution should be exercised to exclude AMI in patients with chest pain and both normal ECG and biomarkers of cardiac injury.
