Abstract
This article explores the intellectual exchanges between France and Soviet Russia on the history of the French Revolution as a lens through which to reassess the importance of the ...international sphere in the making of these academic fields and schools of historical thought. It takes a relational perspective and draws on Russian and French archives and historical journals to avoid the pitfalls of methodological nationalism. While demonstrating just how much political repression constrained these cross-border exchanges on such a critical historical topic, the article investigates scientific internationalization in ways that recall present-day issues regarding cross-cultural co-operation, academic freedom and international scholarly reputations.
This paper explores the complex history of “undisciplined histories” by looking at the tension between political engagement and scientific detachment in revolutionary scholarship, a field perpetually ...torn between historicist methods and presentist purposes. From the controversies surrounding the 1889 Jubilee to the patriotic uses of history during the Great War, the historiography of the French Revolution continuously challenged the principles and methods of history as an academic discipline. This period’s omnipresence in nineteenth-century “memory wars” delayed its academization, which became effective only in the aftermath of the Centenary when newly implemented university chairs, scholarly journals, and historical societies established the history of the French Revolution as a central research topic. However, the advent of the First World War challenged the historians’ impartiality and detachment as they committed to defend their homeland in their historical writings while striving to preserve their intellectual autonomy.

The social and political upheavals of the Revolutionary period created a veritable regime of uncertainty, affecting status and hierarchies, ways of behaving and of perceiving, as well as the manner of speaking. This movement, which attained its apogee in 1793-94, led a number of persons to undertake strategic, indeed opportunistic, actions, concerning self-promotion and negotiation with political and cultural institutions. These actions were animated less by a desire to alter the course of Revolutionary events than by the purpose of achieving personal recognition and control over one’s private career. This article analyses the effects of this dynamic using a collection of pedagogical proposals addressed to the Convention in 1793 and 1794, or to its Comité d’instruction publique by « common persons », to highlight the variety of personal trajectories, of talents and individual aspirations of the contemporaries of the Terror.
