The globular cluster omega Centauri contains the largest known population of
very hot horizontal branch (HB) stars. We have used the Hubble Space Telescope
to obtain a far-UV/optical color-magnitude ...diagram of three fields in omega
Cen. We find that over 30% of the HB objects are ``extreme'' HB or hot post-HB
stars. The hot HB stars are not concentrated toward the cluster center, which
argues against a dynamical origin for them. A wide gap in the color
distribution of the hot HB stars appears to correspond to gaps found earlier in
several other clusters. This suggests a common mechanism, probably related to
giant branch mass loss. The diagram contains a significant population of hot
sub-HB stars, which we interpret as the ``blue-hook'' objects predicted by
D'Cruz et al. (1996a). These are produced by late He-flashes in stars which
have undergone unusually large giant branch mass loss. omega Cen has a
well-known spread of metal abundance, and our observations are consistent with
a giant branch mass loss efficiency which increases with metallicity.

Twenty-eight patients (age range, 28 to 84 years; 57.1% black; 85.7% women) with NIDDM controlled by diet and/or an oral hypoglycemic, with a serum cholesterol levels over 5.20 mmol/L (200 mg/dL).
Following a 2-week placebo run-in period, each patient was randomized to receive either sustained-release magnesium chloride (Slo-Mag), 384 mg/d, or an identical-appearing placebo for 6 weeks. After a 2-week interim washout period, each patient was then treated with the alternative regimen for an additional 6-week period.
The systolic and diastolic blood pressure and levels of serum glucose, low-density and high-density lipoprotein and total cholesterol, triglycerides, and serum and total erythrocyte magnesium were measured at the beginning, midpoint, and end of each 6-week treatment phase.
Systolic blood pressure fell an average of 7.4 mm Hg (P < .05) with treatment. There was no significant change in diastolic blood pressure or levels of serum glucose, low-density and high-density lipoprotein and total cholesterol, triglycerides, or serum and erythrocyte magnesium.
Oral magnesium supplementation in the doses and duration studied is modestly effective in reducing systolic blood pressure in patients with NIDDM but has little impact on other important biochemical parameters related to diabetes-associated end-organ disease.

We present observations of GRB 050318 by the Ultra-Violet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) on-board the Swift observatory. The data are the first detections of a Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) afterglow decay by ...the UVOT instrument, launched specifically to open a new window on these transient sources. We showcase UVOTs ability to provide multi-color photometry and the advantages of combining UVOT data with simultaneous and contemporaneous observations from the high-energy detectors on the Swift spacecraft. Multiple filters covering 1,800-6,000 Angstroms reveal a red source with spectral slope steeper than the simultaneous X-ray continuum. Spectral fits indicate that the UVOT colors are consistent with dust extinction by systems at z = 1.2037 and z = 1.4436, redshifts where absorption systems have been pre-identified. However, the data can be most-easily reproduced with models containing a foreground system of neutral gas redshifted by z = 2.8 +/- 0.3. For both of the above scenarios, spectral and decay slopes are, for the most part, consistent with fireball expansion into a uniform medium, provided a cooling break occurs between the energy ranges of the UVOT and Swifts X-ray instrumentation.
This is a description of how a boy suffering from delayed speech due to emotional disturbances was helped through "child-centered therapy." Intelligibility of speech as well as emotional adjustment ...improved. The author feels that this case tends to "re-enforce the hypothesis that child-centered therapy can be adequate treatment for some kinds of delayed speech."

The cloning and expression of DNA for the three major opioid receptor types (mu, delta and kappa) present new research opportunities for the characterization of novel opioid drugs and their ...interactions with these receptors. We have recently cloned and stably expressed the human delta opioid receptor in CHO cells (hDOR/CHO). The receptor protein consists of 372 amino acids and has the characteristic seven transmembrane domain structure of G-protein-coupled receptors. There is about 60% amino acid identity among the three opioid receptor types. All delta selective agonists mediate the inhibition of adenylyl cyclase activity in the hDOR/CHO cells. Investigations with opioid receptor chimeras and site-directed mutants are providing information on ligand recognition sites and selectivity of delta opioid ligands. The third extracellular loop of the human delta opioid receptor determines the selectivity of delta opioid drugs. Down-regulation and subsensitivity of the receptors occur after chronic treatment with delta ligands. The recombinant hDOR/CHO cell line is an excellent model system for the characterization of novel opioid drugs, second messenger function and regulation.
