Sangjoon Lee adopts a simultaneously global and regional approach when analyzing the region's film cultures and industries. New economic conditions in the Asian region and shared postwar experiences among the early cinema entrepreneurs were influenced by Cold War politics, US cultural diplomacy, and intensified cultural flows during the 1950s and 1960s. By taking a closer look at the cultural realities of this tumultuous period, Lee comprehensively reconstructs Asian film history in light of the international relationships forged, broken, and re-established as the influence of the non-aligned movement grew across the Cold War. Lee elucidates how motion picture executives, creative personnel, policy makers, and intellectuals in East and Southeast Asia aspired to industrialize their Hollywood-inspired system in order to expand the market and raise the competitiveness of their cultural products. They did this by forming the Federation of Motion Picture Producers in Asia, co-hosting the Asian Film Festival, and co-producing films. Cinema and the Cultural Cold War demonstrates that the emergence of the first intensive postwar film producers' network in Asia was, in large part, the offspring of Cold War cultural politics and the product of American hegemony. Film festivals that took place in cities as diverse as Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur were annual showcases of cinematic talent as well as opportunities for the Central Intelligence Agency to establish and maintain cultural, political, and institutional linkages between the United States and Asia during the Cold War. Respiratory epithelial cell death by influenza virus infection is responsible for the induction of inflammatory responses, but the exact cell death mechanism is not understood. Here we showed that ...influenza virus infection induces apoptosis and pyroptosis in normal or precancerous human bronchial epithelial cells. Apoptosis was induced only in malignant tumor cells infected with influenza virus. In human precancerous respiratory epithelial cells (PL16T), the number of apoptotic cells increased at early phases of infection, but pyroptotic cells were observed at late phases of infection. These findings suggest that apoptosis is induced at early phases of infection but the cell death pathway is shifted to pyroptosis at late phases of infection. We also found that the type I interferon (IFN)-mediated JAK-STAT signaling pathway promotes the switch from apoptosis to pyroptosis by inhibiting apoptosis possibly through the induced expression of the
anti-apoptotic gene. Further, the inhibition of JAK-STAT signaling repressed pyroptosis but enhanced apoptosis in infected PL16T cells. Collectively, we propose that type I IFN signaling pathway triggers pyroptosis but not apoptosis in the respiratory epithelial cells in a mutually exclusive manner to initiate proinflammatory responses against influenza virus infection.
Respiratory epithelium functions as a sensor of infectious agents to initiate inflammatory responses along with cell death. However, the exact cell death mechanism responsible for inflammatory responses by influenza virus infection is still unclear. We showed that influenza virus infection induced apoptosis and pyroptosis in normal or precancerous human bronchial epithelial cells. Apoptosis was induced at early phases of infection, but the cell death pathway was shifted to pyroptosis at late phases of infection under the regulation of type I IFN signaling to promote proinflammatory cytokine production. Taken together, our results indicate that the type I IFN signaling pathway plays an important role to induce pyroptosis but represses apoptosis in the respiratory epithelial cells to initiate proinflammatory responses against influenza virus infection.
Drawing on archival materials from the Asia Foundation records at the Hoover Institution Archives and the Robert Blum Papers at Yale University Library, this article focuses on the origins and ...development of the Federation of Motion Picture Producers in Asia (FPA) by unveiling the existence of the Asia Foundation (TAF) and its forgotten motion-picture projects in Asia. Under the leadership of its first president, Robert Blum (1953–1962), the Asia Foundation, a private nonprofit organization, was actively involved in the motion-picture industries in Cold War Asia. The Asia Foundation covertly supported anticommunist motion-picture industry personnel, ranging from producers, directors, and technicians to critics and writers in Japan, Hong Kong, Burma, and South Korea, as well as American and British motion-picture producers in Malaysia and Thailand through clandestine activities. This study aims to investigate how and to what extent TAF and its field agents furtively acted to construct an anticommunist motion-picture producers' alliance in Asia, responded to local film executives' various needs, and negotiated with the constantly changing political, social, and cultural environments in the region during the project's active periods.
Cell death provides host defense and maintains homeostasis. Zα-containing molecules are essential for these processes. Z-DNA binding protein 1 (ZBP1) activates inflammatory cell death, PANoptosis, ...whereas adenosine deaminase acting on RNA 1 (ADAR1) serves as an RNA editor to maintain homeostasis. Here, we identify and characterize ADAR1’s interaction with ZBP1, defining its role in cell death regulation and tumorigenesis. Combining interferons (IFNs) and nuclear export inhibitors (NEIs) activates ZBP1-dependent PANoptosis. ADAR1 suppresses this PANoptosis by interacting with the Zα2 domain of ZBP1 to limit ZBP1 and RIPK3 interactions. Adar1fl/flLysMcre mice are resistant to development of colorectal cancer and melanoma, but deletion of the ZBP1 Zα2 domain restores tumorigenesis in these mice. In addition, treating wild-type mice with IFN-γ and the NEI KPT-330 regresses melanoma in a ZBP1-dependent manner. Our findings suggest that ADAR1 suppresses ZBP1-mediated PANoptosis, promoting tumorigenesis. Defining the functions of ADAR1 and ZBP1 in cell death is fundamental to informing therapeutic strategies for cancer and other diseases.

Karki et al. identify a critical role for ADAR1 in regulating ZBP1-mediated inflammatory cell death, PANoptosis. Treating with IFNs, which upregulate ADAR1 and ZBP1, and nuclear export inhibitors, which sequester ADAR1 in the nucleus, induces robust cell death that inhibits tumorigenesis in vivo, suggesting a therapeutic strategy.
This paper introduces a real-time data compression and transmission algorithm between e-health terminals for a periodic ECGsignal. The proposed algorithm consists of five compression procedures and ...four reconstruction procedures. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, the algorithm was applied to all 48 recordings of MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, and the compress ratio (CR), percent root mean square difference (PRD), percent root mean square difference normalized (PRDN), rms, SNR, and quality score (QS) values were obtained. The result showed that the CR was 27.9:1 and the PRD was 2.93 on average for all 48 data instances with a 15% window size. In addition, the performance of the algorithm was compared to those of similar algorithms introduced recently by others. It was found that the proposed algorithm showed clearly superior performance in all 48 data instances at a compression ratio lower than 15:1, whereas it showed similar or slightly inferior PRD performance for a data compression ratio higher than 20:1. In light of the fact that the similarity with the original data becomes meaningless when the PRD is higher than 2, the proposed algorithm shows significantly better performance compared to the performance levels of other algorithms. Moreover, because the algorithm can compress and transmit data in real time, it can be served as an optimal biosignal data transmission method for limited bandwidth communication between e-health devices.
The innate immune system represents the first line of defense against influenza viruses, which cause severe inflammation of the respiratory tract and are responsible for more than 650,000 deaths ...annually worldwide. mRNA vaccines are promising alternatives to traditional vaccine approaches due to their safe dosing, low-cost manufacturing, rapid development capability, and high efficacy. In this review, we provide our current understanding of the innate immune response that uses pattern recognition receptors to detect and respond to mRNA vaccination. We also provide an overview of mRNA vaccines, and discuss the future directions and challenges in advancing this promising therapeutic approach.
Innate immunity is an important first line of defense against pathogens, including viruses. These pathogen- and damage-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs and DAMPs, respectively), resulting in the ...induction of inflammatory cell death, are detected by specific innate immune sensors. Recently, Z-DNA binding protein 1 (ZBP1), also called the DNA-dependent activator of IFN regulatory factor (DAI) or DLM1, is reported to regulate inflammatory cell death as a central mediator during viral infection. ZBP1 is an interferon (IFN)-inducible gene that contains two Z-form nucleic acid-binding domains (Zα1 and Zα2) in the N-terminus and two receptor-interacting protein homotypic interaction motifs (RHIM1 and RHIM2) in the middle, which interact with other proteins with the RHIM domain. By sensing the entry of viral RNA, ZBP1 induces PANoptosis, which protects host cells against viral infections, such as influenza A virus (IAV) and herpes simplex virus (HSV1). However, some viruses, particularly coronaviruses (CoVs), induce PANoptosis to hyperactivate the immune system, leading to cytokine storm, organ failure, tissue damage, and even death. In this review, we discuss the molecular mechanism of ZBP1-derived PANoptosis and pro-inflammatory cytokines that influence the double-edged sword of results in the host cell. Understanding the ZBP1-derived PANoptosis mechanism may be critical for improving therapeutic strategies.
To investigate the effectiveness of intraprocedural dual-phase cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in detecting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) during conventional transcatheter arterial ...chemoembolization (TACE) and its effect on improving treatment outcomes. Between November 2018 and November 2019, data from 111 patients with unresectable HCCs (N = 263 lesions) were reviewed retrospectively. All patients had undergone baseline magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans within one month prior to the procedure. Both arterial-phase (AP) and delayed-phase CBCT images were acquired during all conventional TACEs. Each HCC detection rate when read by AP-CBCT and when read by dual-phase (DP) CBCT including both AP and delayed phase was compared with that of MRI, and the diagnosis of HCC was based on MRI. Additionally, the follow-up results concerning lipiodol uptake status and tumor response of the lesions detected only by AP-/DP-CBCT were analyzed and compared with MRI-only detected lesions. The overall sensitivity of DP-CBCT (94.7%) was significantly higher than that of AP-CBCT (89.0%) (p = 0.003). In particular, the rate of subcentimeter HCC detection by DP-CBCT was pronounced (91.5% vs. 80.3%) (p = 0.01). Lesions found only by DP-CBCT exhibited positive lipiodol uptake (n = 31/31; 100%) and showed complete or partial responses (n = 24/31; 77.4%) on follow-up CT imaging, while MRI-only detected lesions had less lipiodol uptake (n = 6/14, 42.9%) and complete or partial responses (n = 4/14; 28.6%) (p ≤ 0.001). DP-CBCT imaging during TACE enabled better detection of HCCs than when using AP-CBCT alone, and AP- and DP-CBCT is superior to MRI in detecting chemoembolization-sensitive lesions. This resulted in increased detectability of HCCs and the achievement of better treatment outcomes.
Health authorities have recommended the use of digital tools for home workouts to stay active and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this paper, a machine learning approach is proposed to ...assess the activity of users on a home workout platform. Keep is a home workout application dedicated to providing one-stop exercise solutions such as fitness teaching, cycling, running, yoga, and fitness diet guidance. We used a data crawler to collect the total training set data of 7734 Keep users and compared four supervised learning algorithms: support vector machine, k-nearest neighbor, random forest, and logistic regression. The receiver operating curve analysis indicated that the overall discrimination verification power of random forest was better than that of the other three models. The random forest model was used to classify 850 test samples, and a correct rate of 88% was obtained. This approach can predict the continuous usage of users after installing the home workout application. We considered 18 variables on Keep that were expected to affect the determination of continuous participation. Keep certification is the most important variable that affected the results of this study. Keep certification refers to someone who has verified their identity information and can, therefore, obtain the Keep certification logo. The results show that the platform still needs to be improved in terms of real identity privacy information and other aspects.
