Analysis of eclipsing binaries containing non-radial pulsators allows i) combining two different and independent sources of information on the internal structure and evolutionary status of the ...components and ii) studying the effects of tidal forces on pulsations. KIC 3858884 is a bright Kepler target whose light curve shows deep eclipses, complex pulsation patterns with pulsation frequencies typical of δ Sct, and a highly eccentric orbit. We present the result of the analysis of Kepler photometry and of high resolution phase-resolved spectroscopy. Spectroscopy yielded both the radial velocity curves and, after spectral disentangling, the primary-component effective temperature and metallicity, and line-of-sight projected rotational velocities. The Kepler light curve was analyzed with an iterative procedure that was devised to disentangle eclipses from pulsations and takes the visibility of the pulsating star into account during eclipses. The search for the best set of binary parameters was performed by combining the synthetic light curve models with a genetic minimization algorithm, which yielded a robust and accurate determination of the system parameters. The binary components have very similar masses (1.88 and 1.86 M⊙) and effective temperatures (6800 and 6600 K), but different radii (3.45 and 3.05 R⊙). The comparison with the theoretical models showed a somewhat different evolutionary status of the components and the need to introduce overshooting in the models. The pulsation analysis indicates the hybrid nature of the pulsating (secondary) component, where the corresponding high order g-modes might be excited by an intrinsic mechanism or by tidal forces.
Background
The Evaluation of Groin Lymphadenectomy Extent for Melanoma (EAGLE FM) study sought to address the question of whether to perform inguinal (IL) or ilio-inguinal lymphadenectomy (I-IL) for ...patients with inguinal nodal metastatic melanoma who have no clinical or imaging evidence of pelvic disease. Primary outcome measure was disease-free survival at 5 years, and secondary endpoints included lymphoedema.
Methods
EAGLE FM was designed to recruit 634 patients but closed with 88 patients randomised because of slow recruitment and changes in melanoma management. Lymphoedema assessments occurred preoperatively and at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months postoperatively. Lymphoedema was defined as Inter-Limb Volume Difference (ILVD) > 10%, Lymphoedema Index (L-Dex
®
) > 10 or change of L-Dex
®
> 10 from baseline.
Results
Prevalence of leg lymphoedema between the two groups was similar but numerically higher for I-IL at all time points in the first 24 months of follow-up; highest at 6 months (45.9% IL CI 29.9–62.0%, 54.1% I-IL CI 38.0–70.1%) and lowest at 18 months (18.8% IL CI 5.2–32.3%, 41.4% I-IL CI 23.5–59.3%). Median ILVD at 24 months for those affected by lymphoedema was 14.5% (IQR 10.6–18.7%) and L-Dex
®
was 12.6 (IQR 9.0–17.2). There was not enough statistical evidence to support associations between lymphoedema and extent of surgery, radiotherapy, or wound infection.
Conclusions
Despite a trend for patients who had I-IL to have greater lymphoedema prevalence than IL in the first 24 months after surgery, our study’s small sample did not have the statistical evidence to support an overall difference between the surgical groups.
We report on the setup and initial discoveries of the Northern High Time Resolution Universe survey for pulsars and fast transients, the first major pulsar survey conducted with the 100-m Effelsberg ...radio telescope and the first in 20 years to observe the whole northern sky at high radio frequencies. Using a newly developed 7-beam receiver system combined with a state-of-the-art polyphase filterbank, we record an effective bandwidth of 240 MHz in 410 channels centred on 1.36 GHz with a time resolution of 54 μs. Such fine time and frequency resolution increases our sensitivity to millisecond pulsars and fast transients, especially deep inside the Galaxy, where previous surveys have been limited due to intrachannel dispersive smearing. To optimize observing time, the survey is split into three integration regimes dependent on Galactic latitude, with 1500, 180 and 90-s integrations for latitude ranges |b| < 3
5, |b| < 15° and |b| > 15°, respectively. The survey has so far resulted in the discovery of 15 radio pulsars, including a pulsar with a characteristic age of ∼18 kyr, PSR J2004+3429, and a highly eccentric, binary millisecond pulsar, PSR J1946+3417. All newly discovered pulsars are timed using the 76-m Lovell radio telescope at the Jodrell Bank Observatory and the Effelsberg radio telescope. We present timing solutions for all newly discovered pulsars and discuss potential supernova remnant associations for PSR J2004+3429.

. Typhimurium in 240 beef meat samples were 7.50, 1.25, and 0.83%, respectively. The microbial loads of total
was found in the range of <3 to 15 MPN/g. Eight different serovars of
were identified among the 23 isolates, and
. Agona was the predominant serovar (26.09%). Interestingly, all the
isolates were resistant to penicillin, erythromycin and vancomycin, but the sensitivity was observed for tetracycline, gentamicin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. All 23 isolates were resistant to at least three antibiotics. Two
. Typhimurium isolates (8.70%) exhibited the highest multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index value of 0.56 which shown resistance to nine antibiotics. PCR analysis of virulence genes showed that all
isolates (100%) were positive for the

Semaphorins are implicated in glioma progression, although little is known about the underlying mechanisms. We have reported plexin-B3 expression in human gliomas, which upon stimulation by Sema5A ...causes significant inhibition of cell migration and invasion. The concomitant inactivation of Rac1 is of mechanistic importance because forced expression of constitutively active Rac1 abolishes these inhibitory effects. Furthermore, Sema5A induces prominent cell collapse and ramification of processes reminiscent of astrocytic morphology, which temporally associate with extensive disassembly of actin stress fibers and disruption of focal adhesions, followed by accumulation of actin patches in protrusions. Mechanistically, Sema5A induces transient protein kinase C (PKC) phosphorylation of fascin-1, which can reduce its actin-binding/bundling activities and temporally parallels its translocation from cell body to extending processes. PKC inhibition or fascin-1 knockdown is sufficient to abrogate Sema5A-induced morphological differentiation, whereas the process is hastened by forced expression of fascin-1. Intriguingly, Sema5A induces re-expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), which when silenced restricts differentiation of glioma cells to bipolar instead of multipolar morphology. Therefore, we hypothesize complementary functions of fascin-1 and GFAP in the early and late phases of Sema5A-induced astrocytic differentiation of gliomas, respectively. In summary, Sema5A and plexin-B3 impede motility but promote differentiation of human gliomas. These effects are plausibly compromised in high-grade human astrocytomas in which Sema5A expression is markedly reduced, hence leading to infiltrative and anaplastic characteristics. This is evident by increased invasiveness of glioma cells when endogenous Sema5A is silenced. Therefore, Sema5A and plexin-B3 represent potential novel targets in counteracting glioma progression.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis is a common manifestation of CMV end-organ disease, which has typically been described in immunocompromised hosts. Recently, it has been noted that this also occurs in ...immunocompetent patients. To gather relevant data about clinical presentation, prognosis, and risk factors for development of CMV colitis in immunocompetent hosts, we analyzed all cases that occurred during a 19-year period at our institution.
A case-control study was performed to identify risk factors for CMV colitis in immunocompetent hosts. Electronic medical records of individuals who were admitted and diagnosed with CMV colitis between January 1995 and February 2014 at a tertiary care university hospital were reviewed. Two non-CMV colitis patients who were age- and sex-matched were selected as controls for each case.
A total of 51 patients with CMV colitis were included in this study along with 102 control patients. Certain conditions including renal disease on hemodialysis, neurologic disease, rheumatologic disease, intensive care unit admission, and exposure to antibiotics, antacids, steroids, or red blood cell (RBC) transfusions within 1 month of diagnosis of colitis were associated with CMV colitis on univariate analysis. Among these, steroid use and RBC transfusion within 1 month were identified as independent risk factors for developing CMV colitis on multivariate analysis. The 30-day mortality rate was 7.8% without any attributable mortality.
Steroid use and RBC transfusion within 1 month of the diagnosis of colitis were independent risk factors for development of CMV colitis in immunocompetent hosts.
. Objectives: The canonical Wnt signalling pathway performs an important function in the control of adipogenesis. However, the mechanisms and mediators underlying these interactions have yet to be ...defined in detail. Thus, this study was performed in order to elucidate the roles of the Wnt family during adipogenic differentiation of human adipose tissue‐derived mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs). Materials and methods: We assessed several members of the Frizzled (FZD) family, the receptors of Wnts, inhibitors including the secreted frizzled‐related protein (sFRP) family and Dickkopfs (Dkks), and the downstream factor, β‐catenin. Expressional levels of adipogenic markers regulated by the small interfering RNA of Dkk1 (siDkk1) and sFRP4 (sisFRP4) were assessed using real‐time quantitative PCR and Western blot analysis. Results: The mRNA level of Dkk1 was expressed abundantly in the early stages of adipogenesis and decreased rapidly during the late stages of adipogenesis. However, sFRP4 mRNA was up‐regulated gradually during adipogenic differentiation in hAMSCs. Expression of FZD1, FZD7 and β‐catenin were reduced during adipogenic differentiation. Transfection of hAMSCs with siDkk1 or sisFRP4 partially inhibited differentiation of hAMSCs into adipocytes and restored levels of β‐catenin. Conclusions: We determined that Dkk1 was up‐regulated transiently in the early stages of adipogenesis, and that sFRP4 levels increased gradually during adipogeneis via inhibition of Wnt signalling. Collectively, these results show that Dkk1 and sFRP4 perform an important function in adipogenesis in hAMSCs.
Anthropogenic trade and development have broken down dispersal barriers, facilitating the spread of diseases that threaten Earth's biodiversity. We present a global, quantitative assessment of the ...amphibian chytridiomycosis panzootic, one of the most impactful examples of disease spread, and demonstrate its role in the decline of at least 501 amphibian species over the past half-century, including 90 presumed extinctions. The effects of chytridiomycosis have been greatest in large-bodied, range-restricted anurans in wet climates in the Americas and Australia. Declines peaked in the 1980s, and only 12% of declined species show signs of recovery, whereas 39% are experiencing ongoing decline. There is risk of further chytridiomycosis outbreaks in new areas. The chytridiomycosis panzootic represents the greatest recorded loss of biodiversity attributable to a disease.
