A genome-wide association (GWA) study with pooled DNA in adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) employing ~500K SNP markers identifies novel risk genes and reveals remarkable overlap ...with findings from recent GWA scans in substance use disorders. Comparison with results from our previously reported high-resolution linkage scan in extended pedigrees confirms several chromosomal loci, including 16q23.1-24.3 which also reached genome-wide significance in a recent meta-analysis of seven linkage studies (Zhou et al. in Am J Med Genet Part B, 2008). The findings provide additional support for a common effect of genes coding for cell adhesion molecules (e.g.,
CDH13, ASTN2
) and regulators of synaptic plasticity (e.g.,
CTNNA2, KALRN
) despite the complex multifactorial etiologies of adult ADHD and addiction vulnerability.

The conflict in Syria has, as of this writing, gone on for almost two years. Very few observers expected it to last this long. After the halcyon days of the Arab Spring in 2011, when authoritarian ...leaders fell by the wayside in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and Libya, many expected Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to follow. It has not happened, leading to an enormous humanitarian disaster in Syria that will only continue to grow. There are many different ways the conflict could pan out, based on an almost infinite number of expected and unexpected variables. Essentially, though in a general sense, there are three basic scenarios for the Syrian conflict: (1) Bashar al-Assad falls from power; (2) Bashar al-Assad stays in power; or (3) the crisis turns into a protracted stalemate. Within each of these three scenarios there are a multitude of variations, one or more of which could have already occurred by the time this article is published. Syrian President Bashar al-Asad's inaugural speech in Damascus conveyed clear ideas on how Syria could move forward in terms of economic reform and technological modernization, although it was ...ambiguous, even evasive, on the extent of political reform along a more democratic model. Despite this, however, there was a genuine air of exuberance among many who had longed for change in Syria. Asad's initial strategic vision for an internationally respected and integrated Syria has been consumed by a Syrian paradigm of political survival.
This third edition of the Historical Dictionary of Syria covers the recent events in Syria as well as the history that led up to these events. This is done through a chronology, an introductory ...essay, and an extensive bibliography. The cross-referenced dictionary section has over 500 entries on significant persons, places and events, political parties and institutions, literature, music and the arts. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Syria.
Personal contact with Bashar al-Asad informs a profile of the Syrian President that stands in contrast to the conventional wisdom that he is weak & incompetent. His ascent to the presidency in the ...tumultuous early 21st century is noted. His political maneuvering during this time is described, along with his development as president since 2004. Syria's (& al-Asad's) desire to be taken seriously as an international player is discussed. The Bush administration's policy regarding Syria is criticized in terms of how it has made the Obama administration's dealings with the country more difficult. D. Edelman

In 2011, massive protest movements that appeared to come out of nowhere caught the Arab world’s autocrats by surprise and brought down powerful leaders in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen. Thousands ...of Syrians took to the streets in March 2011 calling for the “fall of the regime,” the popular slogan of Arab uprisings, but found themselves confronting a determined foe willing to slaughter thousands of citizens and to destroy entire city neighborhoods in order to hold onto power. By the middle of 2013, Syria was in the midst of a nightmarish civil war marked by more than 80,000 deaths, sectarian massacres, the flight of one-fourth the country’s population from their homes, the disintegration of government institutions in much of the country, and a rising humanitarian crisis as food, medicine, and electricity grew short. Nobody in Syria or the outside world appears to be in a position to stop what looked like a fight to the bitter end, at whatever cost to the country. The Israeli-Palestinian peace process, the continuing US-Iraqi confrontation, the changing political dynamics in Iran, recent Pakistani-Indian hostilities, and Osama bin Laden -- all of these have ...one important common denominator: significant strands of their origins can be traced to the tumultuous year of 1979. This books offers a new paradigm for studying modern Middle East history by arguing that the year 1979 is perhaps the most important watershed in the post-WWII Middle East. In that year alone, the Middle East witnessed the culmination of the Iranian revolution, the conclusion of the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty, and the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan, all having long-term repercussions that are abundantly present to this day in Middle East society and politics, and in the relations between the Middle East and the United States.
