Human respiratory virus infections lead to a spectrum of respiratory symptoms and disease severity, contributing to substantial morbidity, mortality and economic losses worldwide, as seen in the ...COVID-19 pandemic. Belonging to diverse families, respiratory viruses differ in how easy they spread (transmissibility) and the mechanism (modes) of transmission. Transmissibility as estimated by the basic reproduction number (R
) or secondary attack rate is heterogeneous for the same virus. Respiratory viruses can be transmitted via four major modes of transmission: direct (physical) contact, indirect contact (fomite), (large) droplets and (fine) aerosols. We know little about the relative contribution of each mode to the transmission of a particular virus in different settings, and how its variation affects transmissibility and transmission dynamics. Discussion on the particle size threshold between droplets and aerosols and the importance of aerosol transmission for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and influenza virus is ongoing. Mechanistic evidence supports the efficacies of non-pharmaceutical interventions with regard to virus reduction; however, more data are needed on their effectiveness in reducing transmission. Understanding the relative contribution of different modes to transmission is crucial to inform the effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions in the population. Intervening against multiple modes of transmission should be more effective than acting on a single mode.
Atomically dispersed transition metal active sites have emerged as one of the most important fields of study because they display promising performance in catalysis and have the potential to serve as ...ideal models for fundamental understanding. However, both the preparation and determination of such active sites remain a challenge. The structural engineering of carbon- and nitrogen-coordinated metal sites (M–N–C, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu, etc.) via employing new heteroatoms, e.g., P and S, remains challenging. In this study, carbon nanosheets embedded with nitrogen and phosphorus dual-coordinated iron active sites (denoted as Fe-N/P-C) were developed and determined using cutting edge techniques. Both experimental and theoretical results suggested that the N and P dual-coordinated iron sites were favorable for oxygen intermediate adsorption/desorption, resulting in accelerated reaction kinetics and promising catalytic oxygen reduction activity. This work not only provides efficient way to prepare well-defined single-atom active sites to boost catalytic performance but also paves the way to identify the dual-coordinated single metal atom sites.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia/thrombosis (HIT) is a serious immune reaction to heparins, characterized by thrombocytopenia and often severe thrombosis with high morbidity and mortality. HIT is ...mediated by IgG antibodies against heparin/platelet factor 4 antigenic complexes. These complexes are thought to activate platelets leading to thrombocytopenia and thrombosis. Here we show that HIT immune complexes induce NETosis via interaction with FcγRIIa on neutrophils and through neutrophil-platelet association. HIT immune complexes induce formation of thrombi containing neutrophils, extracellular DNA, citrullinated histone H3 and platelets in a microfluidics system and in vivo, while neutrophil depletion abolishes thrombus formation. Absence of PAD4 or PAD4 inhibition with GSK484 abrogates thrombus formation but not thrombocytopenia, suggesting they are induced by separate mechanisms. NETs markers and neutrophils undergoing NETosis are present in HIT patients. Our findings demonstrating the involvement of NETosis in thrombosis will modify the current concept of HIT pathogenesis and may lead to new therapeutic strategies.

The brain is a hugely diverse, heterogeneous structure. Whether or not heterogeneity at the neural level plays a functional role remains unclear, and has been relatively little explored in models ...which are often highly homogeneous. We compared the performance of spiking neural networks trained to carry out tasks of real-world difficulty, with varying degrees of heterogeneity, and found that heterogeneity substantially improved task performance. Learning with heterogeneity was more stable and robust, particularly for tasks with a rich temporal structure. In addition, the distribution of neuronal parameters in the trained networks is similar to those observed experimentally. We suggest that the heterogeneity observed in the brain may be more than just the byproduct of noisy processes, but rather may serve an active and important role in allowing animals to learn in changing environments.
Background
Retrospective studies suggested that cerebral microbleeds (MB) on magnetic resonance images (MRI) increase risk of intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH).
Objective
To compare the benefit of ...anti-thrombotic agents in stroke prevention (absolute risk reduction 2.49 –6 %) versus risk of ICH in ischaemic stroke patients with MB.
Materials and methods
We prospectively studied patients admitted consecutively for acute ischaemic stroke between 1999 and 2004. MB on MRI were documented. Primary end points were subsequent ICH, recurrent cerebral infarct (CI) and mortality.
Results
A total of 908 patients were recruited. MB were identified in 252 (27.8 %) patients. Mean follow-up period was 26.6 ± 15.4 months. Risk of subsequent ICH increased significantly with quantity of MB: 0.6 % (no MB), 1.9 % (1 MB), 4.6 % (2–4 MB) and 7.6 % (≥ 5 MB) (p < 0.001). There was also a significant increase in mortality from ICH: 0.6 %, 0.9 %, 1.5 % and 3.8 % respectively (p = 0.054). Rate of recurrent CI was 9.6 %, 5.6 %, 21.5 % and 15.2 % respectively (p = 0.226). Mortality from CI and myocardial infarction did not increased with quantity of MB. Survival analyses showed that age, presence of MB, mixed cortical-subcortical distribution of MB were independent predictors of subsequent ICH.
Conclusion
Risk and mortality of ICH increased with quantity of MB. As tendency to recurrent CI exceed that of ICH, anti-thrombotic agents are still warranted. However, in patients with ≥ 5 MB, the high risk and mortality of ICH seem to outweigh the modest benefit of antithrombotic agents. Extra precautions should be taken to minimize risk of ICH. Further studies in patients on Coumadin and assessment of functional outcome are warranted to support these preliminary findings.
Physicians have observed that surgical wounds in the elderly heal with thinner scars than wounds in young patients. Understanding this phenomenon may reveal strategies for promoting scarless wound ...repair. We show that full-thickness skin wounds in aged but not young mice fully regenerate. Exposure of aged animals to blood from young mice by parabiosis counteracts this regenerative capacity. The secreted factor, stromal-derived factor 1 (SDF1), is expressed at higher levels in wounded skin of young mice. Genetic deletion of SDF1 in young skin enhanced tissue regeneration. In aged mice, enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) and histone H3 lysine 27 trimethylation are recruited to the SDF1 promoter at higher levels, and pharmacologic inhibition of EZH2 restores SDF1 induction and prevents tissue regeneration. Similar age-dependent EZH2-mediated SDF1 suppression occurs in human skin. Our findings counter the current dogma that tissue function invariably declines with age and suggest new therapeutic strategies in regenerative medicine.

Nishiguchi et al. show that aging promotes full-thickness tissue regeneration in mouse skin. Aging modulates chromatin accessibility at the SDF1 gene, and genetic deletion of SDF1 in young skin enhances tissue regeneration. Human skin also exhibits age-dependent SDF1 suppression. They identify a rare example where aging improves tissue function.
Because of their relatively high efficiency, high photostability, abundance, low cost, and nontoxic qualities, titania‐based photocatalysts are still the most extensively studied materials for the ...photocatalytic production of hydrogen from water. The effects of the chemical and physical properties of titania, including crystal phase, crystallinity, particle size, and surface area, on its photoactivity towards hydrogen generation have been identified by various investigations. The high overpotential for hydrogen generation, rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, rapid reverse reaction of molecular hydrogen and oxygen, and inability to absorb visible light are considered the most important factors that restrict the photoactivity of titania, and strategies to overcome these barriers have been developed. These issues and strategies are carefully reviewed and summarized in this Minireview. We aim to provide a critical, up‐to‐date overview of the development of titania‐based photocatalysts for hydrogen production, as well as a comprehensive background source and guide for future research.
Titania‐based materials form the most extensively studied class of compounds for the production of hydrogen from water by photocatalysis. Several strategies have been developed to further improve their photoactivity and to extend their absorption range from the UV into the visible‐light region of the spectrum. This Minireview provides a critical, up‐to‐date overview of these works, and also serves as a comprehensive source of background information and guide for future research.
The ability to control particle size and size distribution of nanoparticles for drug delivery is essential because it impacts on the biodistribution and cellular uptake of nanoparticles. We present a ...novel microfluidic assisted nanoprecipitation strategy that enables synthesis of surfactant-free curcumin encapsulated poly(lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles (Cur-PLGA NP) with adjustable particle diameters (30–70 nm) and narrow particle size distribution (polydispersity index less than 0.2). Our Cur-PLGA NP exhibit excellent colloidal stability and inhibit degradation of curcumin. We further demonstrate the potential of our Cur-PLGA NP as a nanotoxic delivery system for curcumin. Cellular viability assay validates a dose-dependent cytotoxicity of Cur-PLGA NP in leukemia Jurkat cells. In contrast, Cur-PLGA NP does not alter the viability of fibroblast NIH3T3 cells, which suggests that the cytotoxicity of Cur-PLGA NP is specific to cell types. Furthermore, there is no detectable effect by PLGA NP to both leukemia Jurkat cells and fibroblast NIH3T3 cells, highlighting the nontoxic nature of our delivery system. Confocal cell uptake studies indicate that PLGA NP do not alter the cell uptake of curcumin. Our microfluidic assisted approach offers a controlled and effective nanobiomaterials synthesis of drug delivery system for curcumin, which can be extended to different capsule materials for a variety of biomedical applications.

The major aim of this study was to investigate heavy metal content of edible fish in the PRD. Eleven species of fish (consisting of 711 individuals) catfish (Clarias fuscus), tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), mandarin fish (Siniperca kneri), snakehead (Channa asiatiea), black bass (Micropterus salmoides), mangrove snapper (Lutjanus griseus), star snapper (Lutjanu stellatus), snubnose pompano (Trachinotus blochii) and orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) were collected for the analyses of heavy metals. Overall concentrations (mg/kg, ww) in the fish muscles were: As (0.03–1.53), Pb (0.03–8.62), Cd (0.02–0.06), Ni (0.44–9.75), Zn (15.7–29.5), Cr (0.22–0.65), Cu (0.79–2.26), Mn (0.82–6.91). Significant level of Pb were found in tilapia at all locations. It is recommended that heavy metal concentrations in different fish species must be determined on a regular basis in the future so as to reduce human health risks from acute and chronic food intoxication.
