Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancer types worldwide. Its increasing mortality trends, especially in emerging countries, are a concern. The aim of this study was to analyse ...mortality trends and spatial patterns of CRC in the state of Sergipe, Brazil, from 1990 to 2019. Trends were calculated using data from the Online Mortality Atlas and Joinpoint Regression Program 4.8.0.1. Spatial analyses were performed using the empirical Bayesian model and Moran indices calculated by TerraView 4.2.2 between 1990 to 1999, 2000 to 2009 and 2010 to 2019. A total of 1585 deaths were recorded during the study period, with 58.42% among females. Trends were increasing and constant for both sexes and all age groups studied. The highest mean annual percent change was 6.2 {95% Confidence interval (CI) 3.4;9.0} for males aged +65 years and 4.5 (95% CI 3.2;5.8) for females aged 50-64 years. There was positive spatial autocorrelation for both sexes in all periods studied when using the Moran index for Bayesian rates. In summary, a consistent trend of increasing colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality has been observed overall. Nevertheless, an altered spatial distribution among males has emerged over the studied period.
Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor used in industrial applications, has been detected in both placenta and milk. We studied the effects of BPA exposure during pregnancy and lactation on body ...composition, palatable food intake, biochemical, hormonal and behavioral profiles of young and adult Wistar rat offspring.
Female rats were divided into: control, BPA10 (10 μg/kg/day) and BPA50 (50 μg/kg/day). BPA was administered by gavage to dams from gestation until the end of lactation. Euthanasia occurred at weaning postnatal day (PN) 21 or adulthood (PN180).
At weaning, BPA10 female pups had higher plasma cholesterol and triacylglycerol. BPA10 male pups showed lower plasma T3. BPA10 pups of both sexes had higher plasma progesterone, testosterone and estradiol. At adulthood, females of both BPA groups had lower food intake and higher insulinemia, whereas males had lower visceral fat, lower progesterone and testosterone concentrations. BPA10 females and males had lower T4 levels, while only males showed lower estradiol. BPA50 females showed lower fat mass, higher lean mass and lower corticosteronemia, while males had lower food intake. In the feeding study, BPA10 males ate more fat at 30 min, while BPA10 females and males ingested less fat after 12 h. BPA10 females showed hyperactivity while both groups showed less exploration.
Maternal exposure to BPA during gestation and lactation, even at low doses, induces life-long changes in the regulation of metabolic homeostasis of the progeny, affects sex steroids and thyroid hormones levels, compromises behavior, but does not lead to obesity or dyslipidemia.
Single-axis knee prosthesis is an artificial biomechanical device that provides motion to amputees without the need for assistance appliances. Besides it is mainly composed of metallic materials, the ...current commercial materials did not group adequate properties for long-term usage or accessible cost. This study produced and characterized Ti-(10 -x)Al-xV (x = 0, 2, and 4 wt.%) alloys for potential use as single-axis knee prostheses. The samples exhibited a gradual decrease in the density values, with proper chemical mixing of the alloying elements on the micro-scale. The phase composition exhibited a primary α phase with a minor α' + β phase for the Ti-8Al-2V and Ti-6Al-4V samples. Due to their different atomic radius compared to Ti, the addition of alloying elements changed the cell parameters. Their selected mechanical properties (Young's modulus, Vickers microhardness, and damping factor) performed better values than the CP-Ti grade 4. The samples also exhibited good corrosion properties against the simulated marine solution. The tribocorrosion resistance of the samples was better than the reference material, with the wear tracks composed of some tribolayers and grooves resulting from adhesive and abrasive wear. The Ti-10Al alloy displayed the best properties and estimated low cost to be used as single-axis knee prostheses.
Sensory neuropathy is a dose-limiting side effect of oxaliplatin-based cancer treatment. This study investigated the antinociceptive effect of amifostine and its potential neuroprotective mechanisms ...on the oxaliplatin-related peripheral sensory neuropathy in mice. Oxaliplatin (1 mg/kg) was injected intravenously in Swiss albino male mice twice a week (total of nine injections), while amifostine (1, 5, 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) was administered subcutaneously 30 min before oxaliplatin. Mechanical and thermal nociceptive tests were performed once a week for 49 days. Additionally, c-Fos, nitrotyrosine, and activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) immunoexpressions were assessed in the dorsal root ganglia. In all doses, amifostine prevented the development of mechanical hyperalgesia and thermal allodynia induced by oxaliplatin (P<0.05). Amifostine at the dose of 25 mg/kg provided the best protection (P<0.05). Moreover, amifostine protected against neuronal hyperactivation, nitrosative stress, and neuronal damage in the dorsal root ganglia, detected by the reduced expression of c-Fos, nitrotyrosine, and ATF3 (P<0.05 vs the oxaliplatin-treated group). In conclusion, amifostine reduced the nociception induced by oxaliplatin in mice, suggesting the possible use of amifostine for the management of oxaliplatin-induced peripheral sensory neuropathy. This pilot study evaluated the clinical efficacy of a mouthwash containing 1% Matricaria chamomilla L. (MTC) extract in reducing gingival inflammation and plaque formation in patients undergoing ...orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study enrolled a total of 30 males and females (age, 10-40 years) with fixed orthodontic appliances and a minimum of 20 natural teeth. The participants were allocated to three groups (n = 10 each) and asked to rinse with 15 mL of a placebo, 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX), or 1% MTC mouthwash, immediately after brushing for 1 min, in the morning and evening, for 15 days. Data (mean ± SD) on visible plaque index (VPI) and gingival bleeding index (GBI) were recorded on days 1 and 15. The placebo group exhibited increases in VPI and GBI (10.2% and 23.1%, respectively) from day 1 to day 15. As compared with placebo, VPI and GBI significantly decreased in the MTC group (−25.6% and −29.9%, respectively) and the CHX group (−39.9% and −32.0%, respectively). In summary, MTC reduced biofilm accumulation and gingival bleeding in patients with gingivitis, probably because of its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities.(J Oral Sci 58, 569-574, 2016)
Hydroxyapatite (HA) from bovine bones has been used as a biomaterial in dentistry due to its biocompatibility and bioactivity. However, dense HA bioceramics still present inadequate properties for ...applications that require high mechanical performance, such as infrastructure. Microstructural reinforcements and control of ceramic processing steps are methods to improve these shortcomings. The present study assessed the effects of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) addition in combination with two sintering methodologies (2-step and conventional), on the mechanical properties of polycrystalline bovine HA bioceramics. The samples were divided into four groups (with 15 samples per group): conventional sintering with binder (HBC) and without binder (HWC) and 2-step sintering with (HB2) and without binder (HW2). HA was extracted from bovine bones, turned into nanoparticles in a ball mill, and subjected to uniaxial and isostatic pressing into discs, according to ISO 6872 standards. All groups were characterized by x-ray diffractometry (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and relative density. Besides, mechanical analyses (biaxial flexural strength (BFS) and modulus of elasticity) were also performed. The characterization results demonstrated that adding agglutinants or the sintering method did not affect HA's chemical and structural characteristics. Even so, the HWC group showed the highest mechanical values for BFS and modulus of elasticity being 109.0 (98.0; 117.0) MPa and 105.17 ± 14.65 GPa, respectively. The HA ceramics submitted to conventional sintering and without the addition of binders achieved better mechanical properties than the other groups. The impacts of each variable were discussed and correlated to the final microstructures and mechanical properties.
Maternal smoking is a risk factor for progeny obesity. We have previously shown, in a rat model of neonatal tobacco smoke exposure, a mild increase in food intake and a considerable increase in ...visceral adiposity in the adult offspring. Males also had secondary hyperthyroidism, while females had only higher T4. Since brown adipose tissue (BAT) hypofunction is related to obesity, here we tested the hypothesis that higher levels of thyroid hormones are not functional in BAT, suggesting a lower metabolic rate. We evaluated autonomic nerve activity in BAT and its function in adult rats that were exposed to tobacco smoke during lactation. At birth, litters were adjusted to 3 male and 3 female pups/litter. From postnatal day (PND) 3 to 21, Wistar lactating rats and their pups were divided into SE group, smoke-exposed in a cigarette smoking machine (4 times/day) and C group, exposed to filtered air. Offspring were sacrificed at PND180. Adult SE rats of both genders had lower interscapular BAT autonomic nervous system activity, with higher BAT mass but no change in morphology. BAT UCP1 and CPT1a protein levels were decreased in the SE groups of both genders. Male SE rats had lower β3-AR, TRα1, and TRβ1 expression while females showed lower PGC1α expression. BAT Dio2 mRNA and hypothalamic POMC and MC4R levels were similar between groups. Hypothalamic pAMPK level was higher in SE males and lower in SE females. Thus, neonatal cigarette smoke exposure induces lower BAT thermogenic capacity, which can be obesogenic at adulthood.
Highlights • Tobacco smoke exposure during lactation has long-lasting influence on feeding behavior and the brain reward system. • Postnatal tobacco smoke exposure increases preference for fat at ...adulthood. • The progeny who was smoke-exposed during lactation can be more susceptible to become food addicts and obese in adulthood.
Ti and its alloys exhibit combination of unique properties for biomedical applications, however their poor tribo-electrochemical behaviour is a major concern. Therefore, TiN coatings were deposited ...on cp-Ti (grade 4) by sputtering technique aiming the improvement of its tribocorrosion behaviour. The properties of the coated samples, using different TiN deposition times, were characterized by using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, FIB-SEM, and nanoindentation. The corrosion behaviour was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization in 9 g/L NaCl solution at body temperature. Tribocorrosion tests were employed under open circuit potential by using a ball-on-plate tribometer with 1 N normal load, 3 mm total stroke length, 1 Hz frequency, and 1800 s sliding duration. The results suggested that the TiN coatings deposited during 80 min presented better corrosion and tribocorrosion behaviour as compared to the bare metal and TiN coatings deposited during 30 min.
•Deposition time affected mechanical and structural properties of TiN films.•Increased Ti2N phase ratio improved the corrosion and tribocorrosion performance.•Increased coating thickness was favourable for tribocorrosion resistance.
Ti and its alloys have attracted attention for biomedical applications, but their low tribocorrosion resistance, lack of bioactivity and antimicrobial properties are still major clinical concerns. In ...this study a ZnO coating, intended to act as an antibacterial agent, was deposited on a Ti-12Nb alloy, which was previously coated with a TiN hard coating, for improving tribocorrosion resistance. The idea behind is the proof-of -concept that ZnO is able to provide interesting tribological properties to the surface, thus inspiring new ZnO-containing surfaces that can combine antimicrobial properties and tribocorrosion resistance. Thus, the corrosion behaviour was studied by open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization tests in phosphate buffered solution at body temperature. The tribocorrosion behaviour was carried out at open circuit potential under 0.5 N of normal load, 1 Hz frequency, during 3600 s sliding in phosphate buffered solution at body temperature. The results indicated that duplex coating sample showed better corrosion resistance and drastically better tribocorrosion resistance compared to uncoated and single TiN coating samples.
•TiN coating improved corrosion resistance of Ti-12Nb alloy•Double layer coating further improved corrosion resistance of alloy•ZnO/TiN double layer presented drastically better tribocorrosion behaviour
