The importance of the rapid vascular effects of aldosterone is increasingly appreciated. Through these rapid pathways, aldosterone has been shown to regulate vascular contractility, cell growth, and ...apoptosis. In our most recent studies, we demonstrated the effects of aldosterone on cell growth and contractility in vascular smooth muscle cells. We showed that these effects could occur via activation of the classic mineralocorticoid receptor, as well the recently characterized G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER), initially characterized as an estrogen-specific receptor. However, the mechanisms underlying aldosterone's endothelium-dependent actions are unknown. Furthermore, the ERK regulatory and proapoptotic effects of aldosterone mediated by GPER activation in cultured vascular smooth muscle cells were only apparent when GPER was reintroduced into these cells by gene transfer. Whether GPER activation via aldosterone might be an important regulator in native vascular cells has been questioned. Therefore, to determine the role of GPER in mediating aldosterone's effects on cell growth and vascular reactivity in native cells, we examined rat aortic vascular endothelial cells, a model characterized by persistent robust expression of GPER, but without detectable mineralocorticoid receptor expression. In these endothelial cells, the GPER agonist G1 mediates a rapid increase in ERK phosphorylation that is wholly GPER-dependent, paralleling the actions of aldosterone. The effects of G1 and aldosterone to stimulate ERK phosphorylation paralleled their proapoptotic and antiproliferative effects. In previous studies, we reported that aldosterone mediates a rapid endothelium-dependent vasodilatory effect, antagonistic to its direct vasoconstrictor effect in endothelium-denuded preparations. Using a rat aortic ring/organ bath preparation to determine the GPER dependence of aldosterone's endothelium-dependent vasodilator effects, we demonstrate that aldosterone inhibits phenylephrine-mediated contraction. This vasodilator effect parallels the actions of the GPER agonist G1. Furthermore, the effects of aldosterone were completely ablated by the GPER antagonist G15. These data support an important role of GPER activation in aldosterone-mediated regulation of endothelial cell growth, as well as in aldosterone's endothelium-mediated regulation of vasoreactivity.
We propose a humidity sensor using an excessively tilted fiber grating (Ex-TFG) coated with agarose fabricated using femtosecond laser processing. The processed grating showcases remarkable ...differentiation between TE and TM modes, achieving an exceptionally narrow bandwidth of approximately 1.5 nm and an impressive modulation depth of up to 15 dB for both modes. We exposed the agarose-coated TFG sensor to various relative humidity levels and monitored the resonance wavelength to test its humidity sensing capability. Our findings demonstrated that the sensor exhibited a rapid response time (2-4 s) and showed a high response sensitivity (18.5 pm/%RH) between the humidity changes and the resonant wavelength shifts. The high sensitivity, linearity, repeatability, low hysteresis, and excellent long-term stability of the TFG humidity sensor, as demonstrated in our experimental results, make it an attractive option for environmental monitoring or biomedical diagnosis.
An all-fiber glucose sensor is proposed and demonstrated based on a helical intermediate-period fiber grating (HIPFG) produced by using a hydrogen/oxygen flame heating method. The HIPFG, with a ...grating length of 1.7 cm and a period of 35 μm, presents four sets of double dips with low insertion losses and strong coupling strengths in the transmission spectrum. The HIPFG possesses an averaged refractive index (RI) sensitivity of 213.6 nm/RIU nm/RIU in the RI range of 1.33–1.36 and a highest RI sensitivity of 472 nm/RIU at RI of 1.395. In addition, the HIPFG is demonstrated with a low-temperature sensitivity of 3.67 pm/°C, which promises a self-temperature compensation in glucose detection. In the glucose-sensing test, the HIPFG sensor manifests a detection sensitivity of 0.026 nm/(mg/mL) and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 mg/mL. Moreover, the HIPFG sensor exhibits good stability in 2 h, indicating its capacity for long-time detection. The properties of easy fabrication, high flexibility, insensitivity to temperature, and good stability of the proposed HIPFG endow it with a promising potential for long-term and compact biosensors.
In order to control energy consumption and reduce pollution, the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) instead of cement to produce green cementitious materials can save energy, reduce ...emissions and achieve sustainable development. This study demonstrates the possibility of developing SCMs with iron tailings (IOTs), fly ash (FA) and ceramic powder (CP) ternary system, as well as the optimization and improvement scheme of gelation activation. The effects of activator dosage, mix ratio and substitution rate on mechanical properties of ternary SCMs system were investigated. The formation and evolution of hydration products were analyzed by differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of the study show that there is synergy in the system. The results show that there is synergy in the system and the hydration reaction is sufficient. At the substitution rate of 30%, the doping ratio of IOTs, CP and FA is 1:2:2 and the Ca(OH)
is 0.6%, the strength reaches 39.9 MPa and the activity index is 91.5%, which can provide a basis for the application and more in-depth study of IOTs multi SCMs.
The increasing concern for decarbonization and sustainability in construction materials is calling for green binders to partially replace cement since its production is responsible for approximately ...8% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), including fly ash, slag, silica fume, etc., can be used as a partial replacement for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) owing to reduced carbon dioxide emissions associated with OPC production. This study aims to investigate the sustainable use of waste oyster shell powder (OSP)-lithium slag (LS)-ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) ternary SCM system in green concrete. The effect of ternary SCMs to OPC ratio (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) on compressive strength and permeability of the green concrete were studied. The reaction products of the concrete containing OSP-LS-GGBFS SCM system were characterized by SEM and thermogravimetric analyses. The results obtained from this study revealed that the compressive strength of concrete mixed with ternary SCMs are improved compared with the reference specimens. The OSP-LS-GGBFS ternary SCMs-based mortars exhibited a lower porosity and permeability compared to the control specimens. However, when the substitution rate was 30%, the two parameters showed a decline. In addition, the samples incorporating ternary SCMs had a more refined pore structure and lower permeability than that of specimens adding OSP alone. This work expands the possibility of valorization of OSP for sustainable construction materials.
A probe-shaped sensor for simultaneous temperature and pressure measurement was reported in this article. The effective length of the sensor was ∼2mm, consisting of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and a ...Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with a nano silica diaphragm. The response sensitivities of the sensor for pressure and temperature were measured as −0.98 nm/MPa and 11.10 pm/°C, respectively. This sensor had an extremely low cross-sensitivity between pressure and temperature, which provided a significant potential in dual-parameter sensing.
Nanomechanical resonators made from suspended graphene combine the properties of ultracompactness and ultrahigh detection sensitivity, making them interesting devices for sensing applications. ...However, nanomechanical systems can be affected by membrane stress. The present work developed an optomechanical resonator for thermal stress sensing. The proposed resonator consists of a section of hollow core fiber (HCF) and a trampoline graphene-Au membrane. An all-optical system that integrated optical excitation and optical detection was applied. Then, the resonance frequency of the resonator was obtained through this all-optical system. In addition, this system and the resonator were used to detect the membrane's built-in stress, which depended on the ambient temperature, by monitoring the resonance frequency shift. The results verified that the temperature-induced thermal effect had a significant impact on membrane stress. Temperature sensitivities of 2.2646 kHz/°C and 2.3212 kHz/°C were obtained when the temperature rose and fell, respectively. As such, we believe that this device will be beneficial for the quality monitoring of graphene mechanical resonators.
BACKGROUND Solid pseudopapillary neoplasms (SPNs) of the pancreas may present widespread peritoneal metastases, but the treatment of this malignancy has not been well described and requires further ...investigation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Four cases of SPN with significant peritoneal metastases in our department were operated and retrospectively summarized after long-term follow-up. Eight more cases of peritoneal metastatic SPN from the PubMed database were also included in the analysis. RESULTS Peritoneal metastases of SPNs have different gross features. The benign nodules were tenacious and well encapsulated, while the malignant nodules were soft and prone to slow bleeding. However, neither of these nodules invaded the small intestines or mesentery. Of the 12 disseminated cases, 7 had history of primary tumor rupture, whereas the others had tumors malignant in nature. A total of 14 surgical events were documented, including 3 complete cytoreductive surgeries (CCRS), 9 cytoreductive surgeries (CRS), and 2 debulking surgeries. After follow-up ranging from 0.3 to 6.1 years, the results of the Fisher's exact test showed no difference between CCRS and CRS in treating either low-grade or high-grade malignant SPNs (P=0.257 and P=0.203, respectively). For all cases of SPN with peritoneal metastases, the CCRS procedure could significantly improve tumor-free survival (TFS) compared to the CRS procedure (P=0.046). CONCLUSIONS SPN rupture could cause significant peritoneal metastases, and either disruption or biopsy of these lesions should be avoided. Peritoneal metastases from SPNs vary both in gross features and biological mechanisms. CCRS may offer optimal therapeutic outcomes and longer TFS for individuals with significant peritoneal metastases of SPNs.
Development of a laboratory selected zeolite into an industrial zeolite-based catalyst faces many challenges due to the scaling-up of reaction which requires many upgrades of the as-prepared catalyst ...such as an enhanced physical strength. To meet this requirement zeolite powders are normally mixed with various binders and then shaped into bulky bodies. Despite the fact there are a lot of reports on the positive features brought by the shaping treatment, there is still a great need to further explore the zeolite properties after the binder introduction. In this case, a lot of studies have been continuously conducted, however, many results were limited due to the usage of much smaller laboratory samples rather than a real factory plant, and more importantly, the maximal/minimal proportion of zeolites in the shaped catalyst. In this research, our shaped catalysts are based on nano-H-ZSM-5 zeolites and alumina (γ–Al2O3) binder while keeping the zeolite content to a maximum. H-ZSM-5 samples and Al-H-ZSM-5 samples are compared in the designed methanol-to-hydrocarbons reaction. With a reduced weight-hourly-space-velocity (WHSV = 1.5 h−1) and a higher reaction pressure (6 bar) favorable for aromatization, together with the tailored instruments for catalyst volume scale-up (20 g samples are tested each time), our tests focus on the early period catalytic performance (during the first 5 h). Unlike a normal laboratory test, the results from the scaled-up experiments provide important guidance for a potential industrial application. The role of the γ–Al2O3 introduced, not only as binder, but also performing as co-catalyst, on tailoring the early time product distribution, and the corresponding coke deposition is systematically investigated and discussed in details. Notably, the Si/Al ratio of H-ZSM-5 still has a decisive influence on the reaction performance of the Al-H-ZSM-5 samples.
Background Chinese materia medica processing is a distinguished and unique pharmaceutical technique in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) used for reducing side effects, and increasing or even ...changing therapeutic efficacy of the raw herbs.Changes in the essential components induced by an optimized processing procedure are primarily responsible for the increased efficacy of medicinal plants.The kidney-yang invigorating effect of rice wine-steamed Cistancha deserticola (C. deserticola) was stronger than raw C. deserticola (CD). Methods A comparison analysis was carried out using the UPLC-Q-TOF-MS.sup.E with the UNIFI informatics platform to determine the influence of processing. In vitro studies were performed for the characterization of constituents as well as metabolites in vivo. The chemical components were determined in CD and its processed products. The multivariate statistical analyses were conducted to evaluate variations between them while OPLS-DA was used for pairwise comparison. Results The results of this study revealed considerable variations in phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs) and iridoids after processing. A total of 97 compounds were detected in the extracts of CD and its processed product. PhGs having 4'-O-caffeoyl group in the 8-O-beta-d-glucopyranosyl part, like acteoside, cistanoside C, campneoside II, osmanthuside decreased after being processed, while PhGs with 6'-O-caffeoyl group in the 8-O-beta-d-glucopyranosyl part, such as isoacetoside, isocistanoside C, isocampneoside I, isomartynoside increased, especially in the CD-NP group. The intensity of echinacoside and cistanoside B whose structure possess 6'-O-beta-d-glucopyranosyl moiety also increased. In in vivo study, 10 prototype components and 44 metabolites were detected in rat plasma, feces, and urine. The obtained results revealed that processing leads to the considerable variation in the chemical constituents of CD and affected the disposition of the compounds in vivo, and phase II metabolic processes are the key cascades of each compound and most of the metabolites are associated with echinacoside or acteoside. Conclusions This is the first global comparison research of raw and processed CD. These findings add to our understanding of the impact of CD processing and give important data for future efficacy investigations.
