Proton‐exchange‐membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are of considerable interest for direct chemical‐to‐electrical energy conversion and may represent an ultimate solution for mobile power supply. However, ...PEMFCs today are primarily limited by the sluggish kinetics of the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which requires a significant amount of Pt‐based catalyst with a substantial contribution to the overall cost. Hence, promoting the activity and stability of the needed catalyst and minimizing the amount of Pt loaded are central to reducing the cost of PEMFCs for commercial deployment. Considerable efforts have been devoted to improving the catalytic performance of Pt‐based ORR catalysts, including the development of various Pt nanostructures with tunable sizes and chemical compositions, controlled shapes with selectively displayed crystallographic surfaces, tailored surface strains, surface doping, geometry engineering, and interface engineering. Herein, a brief introduction of some fundamentals of fuel cells and ORR catalysts with performance metrics is provided, followed by a detailed description of a series of strategies for pushing the limit of high‐performance Pt‐based catalysts. A brief perspective and new insights on the remaining challenges and future directions of Pt‐based ORR catalysts for fuel cells are also presented.

A simple and efficient eletrochemical sensing platform for simultaneous detection of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC) and resorcinol (RC) based on the Au-Pd bimetallic and graphene is described in ...this paper. The Au-Pd reduced graphene oxide (Au-Pd NF/rGO) was prepared by the electrochemical co-reduction deposition via cyclic voltammetry method (CV). The Au-Pd NF/rGO nanocomposite was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and electrochemical methods CV and differential pulse voltammety (DPV) study showed that the three dihydroxybenzene isomers can be catalytically oxidized and discriminated simultaneously on the Au-Pd NF/rGO/GCE. The presence of Pd makes the performance of the sensor superior to that of in the absence of it. Owing to the integrated superior conductivity and excellent catalytic property of Au-Pd NF/rGO, the sensitive and simultaneous detection of HQ, CC and RC was realized in the individual or triple-components solution based on the as proposed Au-Pd NF/rGO/GCE, which shows wide linear range and low detection limit. The detection of them in tap water, river water and lake water were also successfully performed and good recovery was obtained.
Developing anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with high catalytic activities is of great importance for effective water splitting. Compared with the water‐oxidation ...electrocatalysts that are commonly utilized in alkaline conditions, the ones operating efficiently under neutral or near neutral conditions are more environmentally friendly with less corrosion issues. This review starts with a brief introduction of OER, the importance of OER in mild‐pH media, as well as the fundamentals and performance parameters of OER electrocatalysts. Then, recent progress of the rational design of electrocatalysts for OER in mild‐pH conditions is discussed. The chemical structures or components, synthetic approaches, and catalytic performances of the OER catalysts will be reviewed. Some interesting insights into the catalytic mechanism are also included and discussed. It concludes with a brief outlook on the possible remaining challenges and future trends of neutral or near‐neutral OER electrocatalysts. It hopefully provides the readers with a distinct perspective of the history, present, and future of OER electrocatalysts at mild conditions.
Electrocatalytic water oxidation under environmentally‐friendly conditions has received considerable recent research attention. This paper reviews recent advances in the design and development of water oxidation electrocatalysts operating at mild pH, and current challenges and future research directions are also provided.
An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor provides a sensitive and convenient method for early diagnosis of diseases; however, it is still a challenge to develop simple and sensitive sensing platforms ...based on efficient ECL signals and luminophore groups. Porphyrin-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) show great potential in ECL sensing; however, the mechanism and structure–activity relationship, as well as application, are rarely reported. Herein, hydrothermal reactions obtained porphyrin Zr-MOFs (PCN-222) with different specific surface areas, pore sizes, structures, and surface charge states by tuning the reaction time were developed, which served both as the ECL luminophore, coreaction promoter for S2O8 2–, and a connection in the ECL immunoassay. By progressively controlling the condition of the hydrothermal reaction, PCN-222 with large surface area-abundant micropores can be obtained, which has good conductivity and positively charged surfaces, obtaining excellent ECL performance. The ECL performance and the enhancement mechanism were investigated in detail. Using PCN-222-6h with the best ECL intensity as the immobilization matrix for the aptamer, a highly sensitive and selective assay for thrombin was developed. The decrease of the ECL signal was logarithmically linear with the concentration of thrombin in the range from 50 fg mL–1 to 100 pg mL–1 with a low detection limit of 2.48 fg/mL. This proposed strategy provides a brand new approach for tuning of the structures of MOFs as effective ECL signal probes, thus providing wider possibilities for effective ECL immunoassays in the detection of other biomarkers in diagnosis of diseases.

In this work, a new nanomaterial of thiol functional ferrocene derivative (Fc-SH) stabilized Au NPs/carbon dots nanocomposite (Au/C NC) coupling with graphene modified glassy carbon electrode ...(Fc-S-Au/C NC/graphene/GCE) was fabricated to serve as a quadruplet detection platform for ultrasensitive and simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA) and acetaminophen (AC). The Au/C NC was synthesized by adding HAuCl4 into carbon nanodots solution without using any additional reductant and stabilizing agent. Then the Fc-SH was utilized as the protective and capping agent to modify the Au/C NC. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–Vis, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were adopted to characterize the morphology and electrochemical properties of the materials and the electrodes. The Fc-S-Au/C NC/graphene/GCE exhibits a synergistic catalytic and amplification effects towards oxidation of AA, DA, UA and AC owing to the existence of the nanomaterial and electron mediator. When simultaneous detection of AA, DA, UA and AC, the oxidation peak potentials of the four compounds on the electrode can be well separated and the peak currents were linearly dependent on their concentrations. The quadruplet detection platform shows excellent linear range and ultrasensitive response to the four components, the detection limits were estimated to be as low as 1.00, 0.05, 0.12 and 0.10 μM (S/N = 3), and the modified electrode exhibits excellent stability and reproducibility. The proposed electrode has been successfully applied to detect of these four analytes in real samples with satisfactory results.

Ovarian cancer have a poor overall survival rate in patients, and late disease presentation and chemoresistance are the main factors that lead to the mortality of ovarian cancer. Cancer stem cells ...(CSCs), a small subpopulation of cancer cells, have been associated with resistance to chemo- and radio-therapy in cancer treatment. Hypoxia is a common characteristic of many malignant tumors, and increased HIF-1α expression predicts the poor prognosis of ovarian cancer. In this study, we reported the relationship between hypoxia and cancer stem cells-like properties in human ovarian cancer cell lines SKOV3 and HO8910, we found that hypoxia induced cancer stem cells-like properties in ovarian cancer cells. Moreover, SIRT1 was found to be the downstream target gene of HIF-1α, which was involved in the promotion of cancer stem cells-like features in ovarian cancer cells by hypoxia, and NF-κB signaling pathway was involved in hypoxia-induced SIRT1 up-regulation. Our results hinted that HIF1α and SIRT1 might serve as potential therapeutic targets for ovarian cancer.
Heavy metal stress in crops is a worldwide problem that requires accurate and timely monitoring. This study aimed to improve the accuracy of monitoring heavy metal stress levels in rice by using ...multiple Sentinel-2 images. The selected study areas are in Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province, China. Six Sentinel-2 images were acquired in 2017, and heavy metal concentrations in soil were measured. A novel vegetation index called heavy metal stress sensitive index (HMSSI) was proposed. The performance of a multitemporal monitoring model combining the whole growth stage images was better than any other single growth stage in distinguishing heavy metal stress levels. Therefore, HMSSI can be regarded as an indicator for monitoring heavy metal stress levels with a multitemporal monitoring model.

Using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach, we aimed to examine the potential causal ...relationship between noodle consumption and the risk of MetS and its components in adult populations of city hospital-based (
= 58,701) and Ansan/Ansung plus rural (AAR;
= 13,598) cohorts. The instrumental variables were assigned with genetic variants associated with low- and high-noodle intake (cutoff: 130 g/day) by a genome-wide association study (GWAS) with
< 5 × 10
and linkage disequilibrium (r
= 0.001), following adjustment for covariates related to MetS, in the city cohort. MR-Egger, inverse-variance weighted (IVW), and weighted median were applied to investigate the causal association of noodle intake with MetS risk in the AAR. The quality of the MR results was checked with leave-one-out sensitivity and heterogeneity analyses. A higher energy intake with lower carbohydrates and higher fats, proteins, and higher sodium and a lower intake of calcium, vitamin D, vitamin C, and flavonoids were shown in the high-noodle group, indicating poor diet quality. The glycemic index and glycemic load of daily meals were much higher in the high-noodle intake group than in the low-noodle intake group. In the observational studies, not only the total noodle intake but also the different types of noodle intake were also positively associated with MetS risk. In the MR analysis, high-noodle intake elevated MetS, hypertension, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and abdominal obesity in an IVW model (
< 0.05) but not the MR-Egger model. No single genetic variant among the instrumental variables changed their relationship in the leave-one-out sensitivity analysis. No likelihood of horizontal pleiotropy and heterogeneity was exhibited in the association between noodle intake and MetS. In conclusion, noddle intake had a positive causal association with MetS and its components in Asian adults.
A novel catalyst of FeCo nanoparticles (FeCo NPs) incorporated porous nanocages (FeCo NPs@PNC) was first synthesized by encapsulating of FeCo alloy into ZIF-8 and further carbonation of the ...composite. The FeCo NPs@PNC displays enhanced intrinsic oxidase-like activity compared to the individual FeCo NPs and porous nanocages (PNC). The FeCo NPs@PNC can catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to oxidized TMB (oxTMB) without H2O2, producing a blue color with a maximum absorption peak at 652 nm. The catalytic mechanism was investigated and it found that the intermediate (O2·-) produced from the catalytic process in the system of TMB-O2-FeCo NPs@PNC can accelerate the oxidation of TMB to oxTMB. However, ascorbic acid (AA) can reduce the oxTMB and result in a conspicuous blue color fading. Therefore, a novel colorimetric platform was constructed to quantify AA with the linear range of 0.5–28 μM and detection limit of 0.38 μM (at 3σ/m). Owing to the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) can catalyze the hydrolysis of AA 2-phosphate (AAP) into AA, ALP can also be quantified by the above method. And the linear range for ALP is 0.6–10 U L−1 and the limit of detection is 0.49 U L−1. The FeCo NPs@PNC also shows excellent stability and reproducibility. This study provides a new alternative oxidase mimetic on the basis of easily obtained metal-organic frameworks derivatives to replace the expensive natural enzymes and noble metal based nanoenzymes, which will show great potential in biological assays.
