www.hiddenstructures.berlin – a digital project for communicating the art of structural engineering
Even if certain improvements have been recognisable in recent times, the public reception of engineering achievements in the construction field is still deficient overall. On the one hand, this perpetuates the only marginally positive connotations of the entire profession, and on the other hand, it fosters the generally low appreciation of load‐bearing structures and construction in the debate about the preservation of listed buildings. Even outstanding testimonies to historical engineering achievements fall victim to the practice already discussed internationally as facadism, which reduces the preservation of the building to the façade alone while the entire structural framework is lost. In the debate about the interpretation of the value of engineering works, proactive communication of construction as an intrinsic value and cultural heritage is of particular importance. The hidden structures – Ingenieurbaukunst Berlin project makes use of the possibilities of digitalisation and virtual reality for a new dimension of interactive communication of historical and contemporary engineering achievements.
The iron roof and ceiling structures of the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg
Erected within a decade from 1838 onwards, the iron roof and ceiling structures of the Hermitage buildings in Saint Petersburg are today a unique testimony to the beginnings of steel construction due to their size, their rich variety and the fact that they are still largely original. They provide an insight into the construction practices of an open, not yet regulated time in which Europe was only just beginning to systematically explore the possibilities of building with wrought iron and steel. As part of a joint DFG‐funded project, they were examined in detail for the first time in archives and in situ. Using the Winter Palace as an example, after a brief typology of the main supporting structures the article first presents the organization of this major construction site, where a comprehensive quality control system was developed for the delivery of the iron structures. The analysis of the construction processes shows that the design, dimensioning and legitimation of the new structures were based on experience and ”tacid knowledge“ as well as on experimental structural safety assessments and early static calculations and, last but not least, on updates from failures and collapses during construction.

Large construction sites are not only an expression and driver of technical progress but also, as symbolic places, conveyors of political and cultural messages. In the wake of the crises affecting ...large current projects, such as Berlin Airport and the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, public interest in them is currently enormous. However, this is by no means a new phenomenon. The book presented here provides - for the first time - far-reaching and comparative analyses of the history and importance of large construction sites. Using case studies from different cultural spheres and time periods, the authors discuss the multifaceted degrees of impact large buildings have during construction over the frequently long periods of their creation, and the changes in how they are perceived by society.

Yorckbrucken Berlin - Revitalisation of a listed ensemble of railway bridges including cast iron columns at risk of vehicle impacts. Berlin's Yorckbrucken are a listed ensemble of 26 railway bridges built between 1875 and 1934. After decades of neglect, a revitalisation concept has been developed, which takes into account their particular structural conditions. It proposes a new usage for several of the original bridges as pedestrian, bicycle or wildlife overpasses, while others that continue as railway bridges will be replaced. Existing cast iron columns, located closely besides a busy road, proved to be a serious challenge for the planned new uses, as they are not verifiable for impact loads. After an introduction into the history and significance of the bridges as well as the preservation guidelines, the article discusses alternative solutions for the problem of the cast iron columns. The implementation of the preferred alternative is presented through the example of bridge no. 5, which is the oldest surviving steel bridge in Berlin. It has been reconditioned in 2011/2012 to act as a sort of prototype for future works on other Yorckbrucken. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

Berlin’s Yorckbrücken are a listed ensemble of 26 railway bridges built between 1875 and 1934. After decades of neglect, a revitalisation concept has been developed, which takes into account their particular structural conditions. It proposes a new usage for several of the original bridges as pedestrian, bicycle or wildlife overpasses, while others that continue as railway bridges will be replaced.
