The Nature of the Farm is a theoretical and empirical study of contracts and organization in agriculture based on the transaction cost framework. Transaction costs are important in agriculture ...because nature (for example, seasonality, weather, pests) plays such a critical role in determining output and limiting the ability of farmers to specialize. The book develops specific models and tests the implications of those models against data sets from across North American agriculture, as well as against historical case studies such as eighteenth-century European land contracts and the late nineteenth-century Bonanza farms in the United States. The book is organized in three parts. Part I examines the classic question of what determines the optimal choice between fixed rent and cropshare arrangements, concluding that it is determined by a trade-off between incentives to overuse rented land and incentives to underreport shared output. Part II tests several predictions derived from a standard risk-sharing model of contracts and finds little evidence that risk sharing is important in contract choice. Part III extends the transaction costs analysis to broader organizational issues. It introduces seasonality and timeliness costs as forces influencing the gains from specialization and the costs of contracting, and finds that farm ownership and farm organization are routinely shaped by these forces.

parameter and subdominant pairing in either the $s$- or the $d_{xy}$-wave

roughness on the mixed order parameter which may break the time-reversal
symmetry. We find that the subdominant component is suppressed by the roughness
independent of its pairing symmetry; for very rough surfaces the subdominant
component may even vanish completely. Additionally we discuss a possible
real-valued admixture which counteracts the suppression of the
$d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave order parameter at the surface.

Die ...Anwendbarkeit neuropsychologischer Verfahren setzt das Vorhandensein zuverlässiger Normwerte für die zugrunde liegende Population unter Berücksichtigung soziodemographischer Faktoren wie Alter, Bildung und Geschlecht voraus. sowie den
Wortliste-Savings-Score
der CERAD-NP-Testbatterie an einer Stichprobe von 2891 älteren (75 Jahre und darüber) nichtdementen Hausarztpatienten aus Deutschland ermittelt. Die Probanden hatten ein Durchschnittsalter von 80,2 Jahren (SD=3,6); somit bietet dieser Beitrag zuverlässige Normwerte für die neuropsychologische Demenzdiagnostik in den höheren Altersgruppen an.

Hintergrund
Aktuelle internationale Hochrechnungen geben Hoffnung, dass durch eine Reduktion der Prävalenz sieben etablierter, potenziell modifizierbarer Risikofaktoren – ...Bluthochdruck und Adipositas im mittleren Lebensalter, Diabetes mellitus, Depression, körperliche Inaktivität, Rauchen und niedrige Bildung – auch die Prävalenz der Alzheimer-Demenz (AD) substanziell reduziert werden könnte.
Ziel der Arbeit
Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war es, unter Anknüpfung an die internationalen Vorarbeiten Hochrechnungen für ein entsprechendes Präventionspotenzial in Deutschland bereitzustellen.
Methoden
Für jeden Risikofaktoren separat sowie für alle zusammengenommen (unter Adjustierung für den Zusammenhang untereinander) erfolgte die Berechnung: (1) des populationsbezogenen attributablen Risikos (PAR) für AD, (2) der entsprechenden absoluten Anzahl attributabler AD-Fälle und (3) der potenziellen Anzahl der aktuellen AD-Fälle, die durch eine um 10 %, 25 % und 50 % reduzierte Prävalenz des Risikofaktors/der Risikofaktoren theoretisch vermeidbar gewesen wäre.
Ergebnisse
Den Hochrechnungen entsprechend, könnten in Deutschland 30,5 % (PAR) der aktuellen AD-Fälle (305.000 AD-Fällen insgesamt) auf die betrachteten Risikofaktoren zurückgeführt werden. Den höchsten prognostizierten Einzeleinfluss auf die AD-Prävalenz zeigen hierbei körperliche Inaktivität (PAR = 21,7 %; 217.000 attributable Fälle) und Rauchen (PAR = 14,9 %; 149.000 Fälle). Eine um 10–50 % reduzierte Prävalenz aller sieben Risikofaktoren wäre theoretisch mit aktuell 23.000 bis 130.000 weniger AD-Fällen in Deutschland verbunden.
Diskussion
Das ermittelte mögliche hohe Potenzial für eine Reduktion der Prävalenz der AD sollte einen starken weiteren Anreiz zur Bekämpfung der sieben betrachteten Risikofaktoren in Deutschland geben.

critical temperature differs considerably from that for the unrotated case. In
addition we calculate the density of states for different thicknesses of the
ferromagnetic layer; the results reflect the oscillatory behaviour of the
superconducting correlations.

the physical system determines a probability measure with support on this cone.
The present paper analyzes a discrete family of such measures of exponential
type, and does so in an attempt to capture, by a simple random matrix model,
some generic statistical features of the characteristic frequencies of
disordered bosonic quasi-particle systems. The level correlation functions of
the said measures are shown to be those of a determinantal process, and the
kernel of the process is expressed as a sum of bi-orthogonal polynomials. While
the correlations in the bulk scaling limit are in accord with sine-kernel or
GUE universality, at the low-frequency end of the spectrum an unusual type of
scaling behavior is found.
