A patient with a posterior mediastinal malignant neurofibrosarcoma and recurrent episodes of severe hypoglycemia was demonstrated to have basal hyperinsulinemia on repeated study. Despite ...hypoglycemia, there was no glucagon response to aminogenic stimulation. No immunoreactive insulin was detected on extraction of the tumor and no secretory granules of beta type were seen on electron microscopic examination of tumor tissue. Following tumor removal, plasma glucose and insulin levels returned to normal. Alpha cell function improved. These findings suggest stimulation of pancreatic beta cell secretion and possible inhibition of alpha cell response by an extrapancreatic tumor.
The role of literature in perpetuating and breaking out of gender stereotypes has long occupied the various strands of feminist literary criticism. Some have viewed fiction as a mixture of ...reproductive and liberatory tendencies when it comes to sexism. I examine this and other issues from the vantage point of Johan Lyall Aitken's "Masques of Morality". I place the text in the context of newer research on the "ethic of care," noting Aitken's contributions to understanding the social dimensions and limitations of this ethic for women's moral development. Next, I examine the issue of femininity in literature and the portraits of femininity contained in Aitken's book. I follow this with an exploration of how Aitken contributes to feminist literary methodologies. I then consider questions of the "politics of fiction": the ideological nature of literature, its relation to lived experience and the emancipatory potential of literature. I conclude with some observations on literature and cultural politics.
The Science Research Council has approved plans for building a 2 GeV electron storage ring at the Daresbury Laboratory specifically for producing beams of synchrotron radiation and so provide a ...continuing research facility when the electron synchrotron, NINA, is phased out. The initial objective will be to achieve the maximum current obtainable (0.37 A) using a single 250 kW, 500 MHz klystron to provide the RF power. This will produce high fluxes of photons down to 1 Å, initially along three beam lines feeding six experiments. User requirements have dominated the design considerations. Later developments proposed include the addition of a second klystron which will allow the beam current to be increased to 1 A and also provide excess power to supply the additional requirements when special superconducting 'wiggler' magnets are installed to extend the usable wavelength range down to O.1 A. The number of beam lines is expected to increase to about ten.
We have investigated the comparative genome size of five strains of HSV type 1 (HSV-1). Two of these strains have a common origin and differ in their plaque morphology on HeLa cells, one strain is a ...wild type isolate, and two others are established laboratory strains. All strains show high sequence homology based on the melting behavior of heteroduplexes. The greatest sequence divergence between any two strains was found to be no more than 10%. There are real differences in the size of the genomes of these strains of HSV-1 as measured by electron microscopy. The shortest and largest genomes measured differ in size by 10%, however, the size of the genomes of all strains are within 5% of a median valve of 87-88X106.
