Strong gravitational lensing by galaxy clusters has become a powerful tool for probing the high-redshift universe, magnifying distant and faint background galaxies. Reliable strong-lensing (SL) ...models are crucial for determining the intrinsic properties of distant, magnified sources and for constructing their luminosity function. We present here the first SL analysis of MACS J0308.9+2645 and PLCK G171.9−40.7, two massive galaxy clusters imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope, in the framework of the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS). We use the light-traces-mass modeling technique to uncover sets of multiply imaged galaxies and constrain the mass distribution of the clusters. Our SL analysis reveals that both clusters have particularly large Einstein radii (θE > 30″ for a source redshift of zs = 2), providing fairly large areas with high magnifications, useful for high-redshift galaxy searches (∼2 arcmin2 with > 5 to ∼1 arcmin2 with > 10, similar to a typical Hubble Frontier Fields cluster). We also find that MACS J0308.9+2645 hosts a promising, apparently bright (J ∼ 23.2-24.6 AB), multiply imaged high-redshift candidate at z ∼ 6.4. These images are among the brightest high-redshift candidates found in RELICS. Our mass models, including magnification maps, are made publicly available for the community through the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes.
We present a strong lensing analysis of four massive galaxy clusters imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope in the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey. We use a light-traces-mass technique to uncover ...sets of multiple images and constrain the mass distribution of the clusters. These mass models are the first published for Abell S295 and MACS J0159.8-0849 and are improvements over previous models for Abell 697 and MACS J0025.4-1222. Our analysis for MACS J0025.4-1222 and Abell S295 shows a bimodal mass distribution supporting the merger scenarios proposed for these clusters. The updated model for MACS J0025.4-1222 suggests a substantially smaller critical area than previously estimated. For MACS J0159.8-0849 and Abell 697, we find a single peak and relatively regular morphology revealing fairly relaxed clusters. Despite being less prominent lenses, three of these clusters seem to have lensing strengths, i.e., cumulative area above certain magnification, similar to those of the Hubble Frontier Fields clusters (e.g., A( > 5) ∼ 1-3 arcmin2, A( > 10) ∼ 0.5-1.5 arcmin2), which in part can be attributed to their merging configurations. We make our lens models publicly available through the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes. Finally, using Gemini-N/GMOS spectroscopic observations, we detect a single emission line from a high-redshift J125 25.7 galaxy candidate lensed by Abell 697. While we cannot rule out a lower-redshift solution, we interpret the line as Ly at z = 5.800 0.001, in agreement with its photometric redshift and dropout nature. Within this scenario, we measure a Ly rest-frame equivalent width of 52 22 and an observed Gaussian width of 117 15 km s−1.
We present a detailed study of an unusually bright, lensed galaxy at z = 5.424 discovered within the CFHTLS imaging survey. With an observed flux ofiAB =23.0, J141446.82+544631.9 is one of the ...brightest galaxies known at z > 5. It is characterized by strong Ly α emission, reaching a peak in (observed) flux density of >10−16erg s−1 cm−2Å−1. A deep optical spectrum from the Large Binocular Telescope places strong constraints on NV and C IV emission, disfavouring an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) source for the emission. However, a detection of the NIV λ1486 emission line indicates a hard ionizing continuum, possibly from hot, massive stars. Resolved imaging from HST deblends the galaxy from a foreground interloper; these observations include narrowband imaging of the Ly α emission, which is marginally resolved on approximately few kpc scales and has EW0 ∼ 260 Å. The Ly α emission extends over ∼2000 km s−1 and is broadly consistent with expanding shell models. Spectral energy distribution fitting that includes Spitzer/IRAC photometry suggests a complex star formation history that includes both a recent burst and an evolved population. J1414+5446 lies 30 arcsec from the centre of a known lensing cluster in the CFHTLS; combined with the foreground contribution, this leads to a highly uncertain estimate for the lensing magnification in the range 5 μ 25. Because of its unusual brightness, J1414+5446 affords unique opportunities for detailed study of an individual galaxy near the epoch of re-ionization and a preview of what can be expected from upcoming wide-area surveys that will yield hundreds of similar objects.
Strong gravitational lensing (SL) is a powerful means of mapping the distribution of dark matter. In this work, we perform an SL analysis of the prominent X-ray cluster RXJ0152.7-1357 (z = 0.83, also ...known as CL0152.7-1357) in Hubble Space Telescope images, taken in the framework of the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS). On top of a previously known z = 3.93 galaxy multiply imaged by RXJ0152.7-1357, for which we identify an additional multiple image, guided by a light-traces-mass approach, we identify seven new sets of multiply imaged background sources lensed by this cluster, spanning the redshift range 1.79-3.93. A total of 25 multiple images are seen over a small area of ∼0.4 arcmin2, allowing us to put relatively high-resolution constraints on the inner matter distribution. Although modestly massive, the high degree of substructure, together with its very elongated shape, makes RXJ0152.7-1357 a very efficient lens for its size. This cluster also comprises the third-largest sample of z ∼ 6-7 candidates in the RELICS survey. Finally, we present a comparison of our resulting mass distribution and magnification estimates with those from a Lenstool model. These models are made publicly available through the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes.
We present a lens model for the cluster SPT-CLJ0615−5746, which is the highest-redshift (z = 0.972) system in the Reionization of Lensing Clusters Survey, making it the highest-redshift cluster for ...which a full, strong lens model is published. We identify three systems of multiply imaged lensed galaxies, two of which we spectroscopically confirm at z = 1.358 and z = 4.013, which we use as constraints for the model. We find a foreground structure at z ∼ 0.4, which we include as a second cluster-sized halo in one of our models; however, two different statistical tests find the best-fit model consists of one cluster-sized halo combined with three individually optimized galaxy-sized halos, as well as contributions from the cluster galaxies themselves. We find the total projected mass density within r = 26 7 (the region where the strong lensing constraints exist) to be M☉. If we extrapolate out to r500, our projected mass density is consistent with the mass inferred from weak lensing and from the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (M ∼ 1015 M☉). This cluster is lensing a previously reported z ∼ 10 galaxy, which, if spectroscopically confirmed, will be the highest-redshift strongly lensed galaxy known.
We report the discovery of a spectroscopically confirmed strong Lyαemitter atz=7.0281±0.0003, observed as part of the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey(RELICS). This galaxy, dubbed“Dichromatic ...Primeval Galaxy”atz∼7(DP7), shows two distinct components. While fairly unremarkable in terms of its ultraviolet(UV)luminosity(~L0.3UV*,whereLUV*is the characteristic luminosity), DP7 has one of the highest observed Lyαequivalent widths(EWs)amongLyαemitters atz>6(>200Åin the rest frame). The strong Lyαemission generally suggests a young metal-poor, low-dust galaxy; however, we find that the UV slopeβof the galaxy as a whole is redder than typical star-forming galaxies at these redshifts,−1.13±0.84, likely indicating, on average, a considerable amount of dust obscuration, or an older stellar population. When we measureβfor the two components separately, however, we find evidence of differing UVcolors, suggesting two separate stellar populations. Also, we find that Lyαis spatially extended and likely larger than the galaxy size, hinting to the possible existence of a Lyαhalo. Rejuvenation or merging events could explain these results.Either scenario requires an extreme stellar population, possibly including a component of Population III stars, or an obscured active galactic nucleus. DP7, with its low UV luminosity and high LyαEW, represents the typical galaxies that are thought to be the major contribution to the reionization of the universe, and for this reason DP7 is an excellent target for follow-up with the James Webb Space Telescope
Extensive surveys with the Hubble Space Telescope over the past decade, targeting some of the most massive clusters in the sky, have uncovered dozens of galaxy cluster strong lenses. The massive ...cluster strong-lens scale is typically θE ∼ 10″ to ∼30″-35″, with only a handful of clusters known with Einstein radii θE ∼ 40″ or above (for zsource = 2, nominally). Here we report another very large cluster lens, RXC J0032.1+1808 (z = 0.3956), the second-richest cluster in the redMapper cluster catalog and the 85th most massive cluster in the Planck Sunyaev-Zel'dovich catalog. With our light-traces-mass and fully parametric approaches, we construct strong-lensing models based on 18 multiple images of five background galaxies newly identified in the Hubble data, mainly from the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS), in addition to a known sextuply imaged system in this cluster. Furthermore, we compare these models to Lenstool and GLAFIC models that were produced independently as part of the RELICS program. All models reveal a large effective Einstein radius of θE 40″ (zsource = 2), owing to the obvious concentration of substructures near the cluster center. Although RXC J0032.1+1808 has a very large critical area and high lensing strength, only three magnified high-redshift candidates are found within the field targeted by RELICS. Nevertheless, we expect many more high-redshift candidates will be seen in wider and deeper observations with Hubble or the James Webb Space Telescope. Finally, the comparison between several algorithms demonstrates that the total error budget is largely dominated by systematic uncertainties.
ABSTRACT
We report the discovery of a triply imaged active galactic nucleus (AGN), lensed by the galaxy cluster MACS J0035.4−2015 (zd = 0.352). The object is detected in Hubble Space Telescope ...imaging taken for the RELICS program. It appears to have a quasi-stellar nucleus consistent with a point-source, with a de-magnified radius of re ≲ 100 pc. The object is spectroscopically confirmed to be an AGN at zspec = 2.063 ± 0.005 showing broad rest-frame UV emission lines, and detected in both X-ray observations with Chandra and in ALCS ALMA band 6 (1.2 mm) imaging. It has a relatively faint rest-frame UV luminosity for a quasar-like object, MUV, 1450 = −19.7 ± 0.2. The object adds to just a few quasars or other X-ray sources known to be multiply lensed by a galaxy cluster. Some diffuse emission from the host galaxy is faintly seen around the nucleus, and there is a faint object nearby sharing the same multiple-imaging symmetry and geometric redshift, possibly an interacting galaxy or a star-forming knot in the host. We present an accompanying lens model, calculate the magnifications and time delays, and infer the physical properties of the source. We find the rest-frame UV continuum and emission lines to be dominated by the AGN, and the optical emission to be dominated by the host galaxy of modest stellar mass $M_{\star }\simeq 10^{9.2}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$ . We also observe some variation in the AGN emission with time, which may suggest that the AGN used to be more active. This object adds a low-redshift counterpart to several relatively faint AGN recently uncovered at high redshifts with HST and JWST.
Recent observations have revealed the presence of strong CIII emission (EW CIII > 20Å) in z > 6 galaxies, the origin of which remains unclear. In an effort to understand the nature of these line ...emitters, we have initiated a survey targeting CIII emission in gravitationally-lensed reionization era analogs identified in HST imaging of clusters from the RELICS survey. Here we report initial results on four galaxies selected to have low stellar masses (2-8×10 7 M) and J 125-band flux excesses indicative of intense OIII+Hβ emission (EW OIII+Hβ =500-2000Å), similar to what has been observed at z > 6. We detect CIII emission in three of the four sources, with the CIII EW reaching values seen in the reionization era (EW CIII 17 − 22Å) in the two sources with the strongest optical line emission (EW OIII+Hβ 2000Å). We have obtained a Magellan/FIRE near-infrared spectrum of the strongest CIII emitter in our sample, revealing gas that is both metal poor and highly ionized. Using photoionization models, we are able to simultaneously reproduce the intense CIII and optical line emission for extremely young (2-3 Myr) and metal poor (0.06-0.08 Z) stellar populations, as would be expected after a substantial upturn in the SFR of a low mass galaxy. The sources in this survey are among the first for which CIII has been used as the primary means of redshift confirmation. We suggest that it should be possible to extend this approach to z > 6 with current facilities, using CIII to measure redshifts of objects with IRAC excesses indicating EW OIII+Hβ 2000Å, providing a method of spectroscopic confirmation independent of Lyα.
MACS0647-JD is a triply lensed z similar to 11 galaxy originally discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope. The three lensed images are magnified by factors of similar to 8, 5, and 2 to AB mag 25.1, ...25.6, and 26.6 at 3.5 mu m. The brightest is over a magnitude brighter than other galaxies recently discovered at similar redshifts z > 10 with JWST. Here, we report new JWST imaging that clearly resolves MACS0647-JD as having two components that are either merging galaxies or stellar complexes within a single galaxy. The brighter larger component "A" is intrinsically very blue (ss similar to-2.6 +/- 0.1), likely due to very recent star formation and no dust, and is spatially extended with an effective radius similar to 70 +/- 24 pc. The smaller component "B" (r similar to 20-+ 58 pc) appears redder (ss similar to-2 +/- 0.2), likely because it is older (100-200 Myr) with mild dust extinction (AV similar to 0.1 mag). With an estimated stellar mass ratio of roughly 2:1 and physical projected separation similar to 400 pc, we may be witnessing a galaxy merger 430 million years after the Big Bang. We identify galaxies with similar colors in a high-redshift simulation, finding their star formation histories to be dissimilar, which is also suggested by the spectral energy distribution fitting, suggesting they formed further apart. We also identify a candidate companion galaxy "C" similar to 3 kpc away, likely destined to merge with A and B. Upcoming JWST Near Infrared Spectrograph observations planned for 2023 January will deliver spectroscopic redshifts and more physical properties for these tiny magnified distant galaxies observed in the early universe.
