There remains a high level of ambiguity around post-fire grazing management. The Lodgepole Complex fire burned 109,346 ha in east-central Montana in July 2017, including areas previously burned in 2003 by the Bureau of Land Management for fuels mitigation. We hypothesized that herbaceous productivity and species composition in ponderosa pine woodlands are resistant to moderate grazing and timing of defoliation the first growing season after fire. Eight exclosures (25 × 15 m) were built, 4 on reburned area and 4 on wildfire area. To determine grazing effects, a 15 × 10 m sampling area in each exclosure was paired with a grazed section outside the exclosure. Additionally, four 5x10-m plots were established within each exclosure and were mowed to 10 cm in June, July, August, or not mowed to determine seasonal defoliation effects. Differences between grazed and nongrazed sites in 2019 were limited. There was a trend for less old dead biomass in grazed than nongrazed treatments. Species richness was greater on grazed sites than nongrazed or reburn sites. Native species richness was greater on grazed sites than nongrazed sites and reburn sites had an intermediate level of native species richness. Standing crop was reduced by defoliation, with current year and perennial grass biomass being unaffected. The reduction in standing crop was driven by less old dead biomass on defoliated plots. June defoliation reduced C3 grasses and increased C4 grasses, and June and July defoliation each reduced annual grasses. Simpson’s and native Simpson’s diversity were greater on defoliated plots. Results indicate ponderosa pine woodland is resilient to moderate post-fire grazing.
Efforts by state and federal agencies to develop standards and guidelines for protecting and enhancing water quality on grazing lands have led to suggestions that grazed stubble height criteria could ...be used to determine when cattle should be removed from a specific pasture or grazing area. Until recently only indirect scientific evidence from agronomy and laboratory studies gave support to the stubble height concept. Consequently, a grazing study was initiated on a Montana ranch in 1997 to determine the reduction in overland sediment achieved by grazing a pasture to a predetermined stubble height. Treatments consisted of 7 cm (3 in) grazed, 7 cm (3 in) clipped or mowed, 15 cm (6 in) grazed; 15 cm (6 in) clipped and untreated or natural forage plant height. The five treatments were used in a two-year trial spanning 1997 to 1999. At the conclusion of this study the magnitude of sediment production was related to the number of intense rain events during the March through June period rather than total precipitation. There was a significant year effect in terms of sediment accumulation (P < 0.01) but no year by treatment effect (P = 0.11). Even though a significant difference in sediment accumulation was detected between the shorter and taller stubble heights (P = 0.04) in both 1998 and 1999, the difference could not be explained by grazed stubble height alone. Close grazing (7 cm stubble) consistently ranked lowest in sediment production (P < 0.01) among all treatments, including the ungrazed control. These results suggest that changes in plant community structure and microtopographic caused by grazing influence sediment entrapment (retention) on hillslopes more than those caused by plant height.

The influence of spotted knapweed on surface runoff and sediment yield was determined under simulated rainfall conditions near Garrison, MT. Comparisons were made in 12 paired plots: one of each pair ...dominated by bunchgrass and the other dominated by spotted knapweed. Runoff and sediment yield were 56% and 192% higher, respectively, for the spotted knapweed, rather than the bunchgrass vegetation types. Spotted knapweed invasion onto bunchgrass range of western Montana is thus detrimental to the protection of soil and water resources.
Pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy was recently shown to be due to mutations in the ALDH7A1 gene, which encodes antiquitin, an enzyme that catalyses the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent ...dehydrogenation of l-α-aminoadipic semialdehyde/l-Δ1-piperideine 6-carboxylate. However, whilst this is a highly treatable disorder, there is general uncertainty about when to consider this diagnosis and how to test for it. This study aimed to evaluate the use of measurement of urine l-α-aminoadipic semialdehyde/creatinine ratio and mutation analysis of ALDH7A1 (antiquitin) in investigation of patients with suspected or clinically proven pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy and to characterize further the phenotypic spectrum of antiquitin deficiency. Urinary l-α-aminoadipic semialdehyde concentration was determined by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. When this was above the normal range, DNA sequencing of the ALDH7A1 gene was performed. Clinicians were asked to complete questionnaires on clinical, biochemical, magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalography features of patients. The clinical spectrum of antiquitin deficiency extended from ventriculomegaly detected on foetal ultrasound, through abnormal foetal movements and a multisystem neonatal disorder, to the onset of seizures and autistic features after the first year of life. Our relatively large series suggested that clinical diagnosis of pyridoxine dependent epilepsy can be challenging because: (i) there may be some response to antiepileptic drugs; (ii) in infants with multisystem pathology, the response to pyridoxine may not be instant and obvious; and (iii) structural brain abnormalities may co-exist and be considered sufficient cause of epilepsy, whereas the fits may be a consequence of antiquitin deficiency and are then responsive to pyridoxine. These findings support the use of biochemical and DNA tests for antiquitin deficiency and a clinical trial of pyridoxine in infants and children with epilepsy across a broad range of clinical scenarios.
Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) represents a serious threat to the productivity and profitability of many cattle ranches in the midwestern U.S. Sheep and goats will graze the weed, but cattle ...generally do not. We hypothesized that cattle avoid leafy spurge because it contains 1 or more chemicals that elicit a conditioned flavor aversion when consumed. First, we tested cattle to determine if they reduced their intake of a novel feed on subsequent days if we modestly increased rumen fill by introducing additional feed or additional feed plus an aversive agent (lithium chloride, LiCl) after they had consumed the novel feed. We observed that cattle became averted (P = 0.0001) to the novel feed only when LiCl was administered with additional feed. Simply increasing rumen fill by a small amount did not cause cattle to reduce their intake of the novel feed the following day. Secondly, we tested cattle to determine if they reduced their intake of a novel feed on subsequent days if we introduced leafy spurge into their rumina following consumption of the novel feed. We also tested cattle to determine if a spurge-induced aversion to a novel feed was preventable by inoculation with rumen microbes from sheep with spurge in their diets. We found that introducing spurge into cattle after their intake of novel feed reduced (P 0.01) their intake of the novel feed on subsequent days. Cattle inoculated with rumen microbes from spurge-adapted sheep had similar (P 0.40) aversions to a novel feed paired with spurge introductions. Apparently, cattle avoid leafy spurge partly or wholly because they develop a conditioned aversion after first ingesting some threshold amount of it
