After the Treaties of Peace normalized relations with North Africa and the Ottoman Empire, warships and corsair vessels from those countries began to frequent Spanish ports. Most arrived in search of ...food, water, or repairs, while others formed part of convoys that were escorting merchant ships. Most of these visits created few problems, but we will be describing some conflicts that arose from time to time.
The Spanish-Moroccan Treaty of Peace, Friendship, and Trade signed in 1767 provided little detail about how warships of the respective countries should be dealt with when they visited a port of the other; only
Between 1793 and 1814 the Spanish monarchy was wholly at peace during only two years, 1796 and 1803: in all the others it was fighting either France (17931795, 1808-1814) or Great Britain (1797-1802, ...1804-1808). Those conflicts formed part of the long cycle of wars provoked by the French Revolution and continued by Napoleon’s incursions.
Spaniards, Frenchmen, and Englishmen were involved in all these hostilities, a fact that gave great advantages to ships that sailed under neutral flags. Especially from 1797 onward, when the British Royal Navy blockaded Spanish coasts and ships during the Spanish-English war, sea travel became difficult in general
The Spanish authorities in the Protectorate promoted an idealised image of Morocco by means of the iconography through which the colony was depicted in national and international exhibitions and in ...tourist promotion (posters, stamps, postcards, etc.). Pride of place was given to idealised portrayals of traditional ways of life (craftsmen, merchants, idlers, farmers, shepherds, fishermen, etc.), all set in a peaceful, industrious and well-groomed atmosphere that reeked of paternalism. In this traditional image it was perforce necessary to include –albeit in tiny doses– graphic examples of the modernisation introduced by the « protecting » nation: aeroplanes, motor cars, boats, trains, factories, bridges, roads, modern schools and so forth. Nevertheless, the resulting image, respectful if paternalistic of the colonised people, existed side by side with the negative perception of Moroccans that the orientalists and the colonialists had evinced in former times and continued to evince, and with a large proportion of the iconographic output then produced by private initiative.
According to the author, several episodes in history from the 7th century to the present day have favoured, on the part of Spaniards, a negative perception of Arabo-Muslims in general and of Moroccans in particular in which a whole diverse series of prejudices and stereotypes converge. The relationship between the negative image and the tolerant one has never been static, and it depends on the changes produced in the Spanish political context, in the Arabo-Muslim countries, and in the international sphere. Out of a desire for revenge or to recover what has been lost, the image of Moroccans has been demonised and identified with barbarism in different periods and circumstances.
