Methanol toxicity is an important cause of toxic alcohol exposure resulting in morbidity and mortality in both adult and pediatric populations. Methanol is metabolized into formaldehyde and formic ...acid: toxic metabolites that can cause altered mental status, visual disturbances, multisystem organ failure, and death. Recognition of methanol intoxication and rapid treatment are critical for the prevention of long-term sequelae. We present the case of a 16-year-old male with a past medical history of depression who intentionally ingested windshield wiper fluid containing methanol. Based on the patient’s osmolal gap, he was estimated to have a serum methanol level of 374 mg/dL; a send-out laboratory measurement later revealed a serum methanol level of 436 mg/dL. Therapy included two hemodialysis treatments as well as fomepizole and supportive care. The patient recovered remarkably with no long-term sequelae. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of swift recognition and treatment of methanol ingestion. Optimization of methods of measuring serum methanol and evidence-based guidelines for therapy are needed to improve the care of patients with methanol intoxication.
The authors examined student reactions to an activity in computer science, psychology, women's studies, and education courses. The reciprocal interview involves the instructor gathering information ...about the students, followed by students collectively asking questions of the instructor. The interview aims to make students more comfortable in interactions with the instructor by soliciting student input. Student responses indicated they enjoyed the activity and recommend faculty use it in various courses. Participants also reported the interview process helped create a more comfortable classroom environment and helped clarify instructors' expectations of students.
The astronomical community is grappling with the increasing volume and complexity of data produced by modern telescopes, due to difficulties in reducing, accessing, analyzing, and combining archives ...of data. To address this challenge, we propose the establishment of a coordinating body, an "entity," with the specific mission of enhancing the interoperability, archiving, distribution, and production of both astronomical data and software. This report is the culmination of a workshop held in February 2023 on the Future of Astronomical Data Infrastructure. Attended by 70 scientists and software professionals from ground-based and space-based missions and archives spanning the entire spectrum of astronomical research, the group deliberated on the prevailing state of software and data infrastructure in astronomy, identified pressing issues, and explored potential solutions. In this report, we describe the ecosystem of astronomical data, its existing flaws, and the many gaps, duplication, inconsistencies, barriers to access, drags on productivity, missed opportunities, and risks to the long-term integrity of essential data sets. We also highlight the successes and failures in a set of deep dives into several different illustrative components of the ecosystem, included as an appendix.
To compare conventional and storage phosphor radiography of the injured cervical spine.
Sixty-five patients underwent imaging in a supine position while wearing a cervical collar. Matched storage ...phosphor and conventional lateral cervical spine radiographs were obtained with an 18 x 24-cm hybrid cassette. Edge-enhanced and nonenhanced copies of each computed radiograph were printed on film, and the images were sent via a computer network to a remote imaging workstation. Four radiologists read the conventional radiographs, the two hard-copy computed radiographs, and the soft-copy images and used a binary scale to score the visibility of bone and soft-tissue structures.
All readers scored better in all areas with computed radiographs, and a statistically significant (P = .030) improvement in performance was seen for soft-tissue structures.
Storage phosphor imaging offers advantages over conventional radiography, and digital images may be a viable alternative to film.
The capabilities of spiral computed tomography (CT) versus conventional CT to represent minimal fracture displacements on multiplanar reconstruction images in a phantom model were evaluated.
A ...displacement phantom was created from Teflon and was scanned with conventional and spiral CT, at slice collimations of 2 mm, 3 mm, and 5 mm. Three Z-axis interpolation algorithms (360_LI, 180_LI and 180_HI) were employed to process the spiral image data into planar images. Displacements of 5 mm or less were represented in the phantom, and the resultant multiplanar reconstructions were analyzed for the precision of displacement representation. Specifically, the edge profiles of the reconstructed images were measured and compared.
Spiral CT reconstruction edge profiles were similar to those of conventional CT when minimal table increments (3 mm/sec or less), and an advanced interpolation algorithm (180_LI) was employed. Images obtained with 360_LI interpolation manifested the effect of widened slice profile even when employing minimal table speeds.
With minimal table increment (3 mm/sec or less) and a high-order interpolation algorithm (180_LI), spiral-CT-derived reconstructions demonstrate similar edge profile resolution to reconstructions obtained from conventional CT.
ESA's INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) was launched on 17 Oct 2002 at 06:41 CEST. Since then, it has been providing long, uninterrupted observations (up to about 47 hr, or ...170 ksec, per satellite orbit of 2.7 days) with a large field-of-view (fully coded: 100 deg^2), msec time resolution, keV energy resolution, polarization measurements, as well as additional coverage in the optical. This is realized by two main instruments in the 15 keV to 10 MeV range, the spectrometer SPI (spectral resolution 3 keV at 1.8 MeV) and the imager IBIS (angular resolution 12 arcmin FWHM), complemented by X-ray (JEM-X; 3-35 keV) and optical (OMC; Johnson V-band) monitors. All instruments are co-aligned to simultaneously observe the target region. A particle radiation monitor (IREM) measures charged particle fluxes near the spacecraft. The Anti-coincidence subsystems of the main instruments are also efficient all-sky gamma-ray detectors, which provide omni-directional monitoring above ~75 keV. INTEGRAL can also rapidly (within a couple of hours) re-point and conduct Target of Opportunity observations. INTEGRAL has build an impressive legacy: e.g. discovery of >600 new high-energy sources; first-ever direct detection of 56Ni and 56Co radio-active decay lines from a Type Ia supernova; new insights on positron annihilation in the Galactic bulge and disk; pioneering gamma-ray polarization studies. INTEGRAL is also a successful in multi-messenger astronomy: INTEGRAL found the first prompt electromagnetic radiation in coincidence with a binary neutron star merger. More than 1750 papers based on INTEGRAL data have been published in refereed journals. Here we give a comprehensive update of the satellite status after more than 18 years of operations in a harsh space environment, and an account of the successful Ground Segment.
