Due to be launched in late 2021, the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a NASA Small Explorer mission designed to perform polarization measurements in the 2–8 keV band, complemented with ...imaging, spectroscopy and timing capabilities. At the heart of the focal plane is a set of three polarization-sensitive Gas Pixel Detectors (GPD), each based on a custom ASIC acting as a charge-collecting anode.
In this paper we shall review the design, manufacturing, and test of the IXPE focal-plane detectors, with particular emphasis on the connection between the science drivers, the performance metrics and the operational aspects. We shall present a thorough characterization of the GPDs in terms of effective noise, trigger efficiency, dead time, uniformity of response, and spectral and polarimetric performance. In addition, we shall discuss in detail a number of instrumental effects that are relevant for high-level science analysis—particularly as far as the response to unpolarized radiation and the stability in time are concerned.
Abstract Odontogenic infections (OIs) occasionally spread to deep facial and neck tissues. Our study aimed to explore the role of Streptococcus anginous group (SAG) in these severe OIs. A ...retrospective study of patients aged >=18 years who required hospital care for acute OI was conducted. We analysed data of OI microbial samples and recorded findings of SAG and other pathogens. These findings were compared with data regarding patients' prehospital status and variables of infection severity. In total, 290 patients were included in the analyses. The most common (49%) bacterial finding was SAG. Other common findings were Streptococcus viridans and Prevotella species, Parvimonas micra, and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Infection severity variables were strongly associated with SAG occurrence. Treatment in an intensive care unit was significantly more common in patients with SAG than in patients without SAG (p < 0.001). In addition, SAG patients expressed higher levels of C-reactive protein (p = 0.001) and white blood cell counts (p < 0.001), and their hospital stays were longer than those of non-SAG patients (p = 0.001). SAG is a typical finding in severe OIs. Clinical features of SAG-related OIs are more challenging than in other OIs. Early detection of SAG, followed by comprehensive infection care with prompt and careful surgical treatment, is necessary due to the aggressive behaviour of this dangerous pathogen.
Levosimendan was first approved for clinic use in 2000, when authorisation was granted by Swedish regulatory authorities for the haemodynamic stabilisation of patients with acutely decompensated ...chronic heart failure. In the ensuing 20 years, this distinctive inodilator, which enhances cardiac contractility through calcium sensitisation and promotes vasodilatation through the opening of adenosine triphosphate-dependent potassium channels on vascular smooth muscle cells, has been approved in more than 60 jurisdictions, including most of the countries of the European Union and Latin America. Areas of clinical application have expanded considerably and now include cardiogenic shock, takotsubo cardiomyopathy, advanced heart failure, right ventricular failure and pulmonary hypertension, cardiac surgery, critical care and emergency medicine. Levosimendan is currently in active clinical evaluation in the US. Levosimendan in IV formulation is being used as a research tool in the exploration of a wide range of cardiac and non-cardiac disease states. A levosimendan oral form is at present under evaluation in the management of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. To mark the 20 years since the advent of levosimendan in clinical use, 51 experts from 23 European countries (Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and Ukraine) contributed to this essay, which evaluates one of the relatively few drugs to have been successfully introduced into the acute heart failure arena in recent times and charts a possible development trajectory for the next 20 years.
We developed a fabrication method for free-standing metal structures with high aspect ratios to manufacture inductive grid filters for infrared rejection. Deep grooves in thermally evaporated SiO
2 ...layer, fabricated by electron beam lithography and etching, were filled with iridium by atomic layer deposition technique. Characterization shows that the fabricated structures can suppress infrared radiation over two orders of magnitude while transmitting 40% of XUV radiation.

An investigation of light diffusion in x-ray intensifying screens and the prospects for improvement by confining light spread with a special structure are reported. Light diffusion in CaWO4 screens ...was studied theoretically using computer simulation. The proportion and spatial distribution of light emerging from different depths in the screen were calculated. The introduction of narrow gaps in the screens made it possible to improve these proportions and distributions. The gaps improved the line spread functions, the screen efficiencies, and the average contribution of the absorbed quanta to the light output.
