The purpose of this study was to explore whether subgroups of patients with different functional recovery trajectories after total hip arthroplasty can be discerned, as well as their predictors, ...using data from the Dutch Arthroplasty Register (Landelijke Registratie Orthopedische Implantaten LROI).
We retrospectively reviewed prospectively collected Oxford Hip Scores (OHS) up to 1 year postoperatively for patients who had undergone a primary total hip arthroplasty. Latent class growth modeling was used to classify subgroups of patients according to the trajectory of functional recovery represented by the patients' OHS. We used multivariable multinomial logistic regression analysis to explore factors associated with class membership.
A total of 6,030 patients were analyzed. Latent class growth modeling identified fast starters (fast initial improvement, high 12-month scores; 87.7%), slow starters (no initial change and subsequent improvement; 4.6%), and late dippers (initial improvement and subsequent deterioration; 7.7%). Factors associated with slow starters were female sex (odds ratio OR, 1.63 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.14 to 2.33) and smoking (OR, 1.95 95% CI, 1.26 to 3.03); an anterior approach (OR, 0.47 95% CI, 0.29 to 0.78) had a protective effect against a less favorable response. Factors associated with late dippers were age of >75 years (OR, 1.62 95% CI, 1.22 to 2.15), smoking (OR, 1.68 95% CI, 1.17 to 2.42), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade of III or IV (OR, 1.41 95% CI, 1.05 to 1.91), obesity (OR, 1.96 95% CI, 1.43 to 2.69), poorer EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) Self-Care (OR, 1.41 95% CI, 1.09 to 1.82 for "some problems" and OR, 2.90 95% CI, 1.39 to 6.03 for "unable"), poorer EQ-5D Anxiety/Depression (OR, 1.31 95% CI, 1.00 to 1.71 for "moderately" and OR, 1.86 95% CI, 1.06 to 3.24 for "extremely"), poorer EQ-5D visual analog scale (OR, 0.91 95% CI, 0.86 to 0.97 per 10 points), direct lateral approach (OR, 2.18 95% CI, 1.58 to 3.02), and hybrid fixation with a cemented acetabular implant (OR, 1.79 95% CI, 1.00 to 3.21).
We discerned fast starters, slow starters, and late dippers after total hip arthroplasty. Female sex, older age, obesity, higher ASA grades, and worse EQ-5D scores were associated with a less favorable response to total hip arthroplasty, as well as hybrid fixation (cemented acetabular implant) and direct lateral approach. Anterior approach had a protective effect against a less favorable response. However, all subgroups experienced functional improvement following total hip arthroplasty.

CologneAMS is a new centre for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at the University of Cologne. It has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) to improve the experimental conditions ...especially for those German scientists that apply the AMS technique for their geologic, environmental, nuclear chemical, and nuclear astrophysical research. The new AMS-device has been built by High Voltage Engineering Europe (HVEE) and has been installed in the existing accelerator area of the Institute of Nuclear Physics. The AMS-facility is designed for the spectrometry of 10Be, 14C, 26Al, 36Cl, 41Ca, 129I in and heavy ions up to 236U and 244Pu. The central part of the AMS-facility is a 6MV Tandetron™ accelerator. Downstream of the high energy mass spectrometer an additional switching magnet is used as a further filter element which supplies also additional ports for future extensions of the detector systems. The current status of CologneAMS and the results of the first test measurements will be presented.
Mumiyo deposits form in the vicinity of snow petrel (Pagodroma nivea) nesting sites and consist of fossil stomach oil (mumiyo), guano, and minerogenic material. Here we evaluate mumiyo deposits from ...the inland mountain ranges of central Dronning Maud Land as high‐resolution archives for paleoenvironmental reconstructions in Antarctica. Investigation of internal structures and chemical composition shows that the lamination reflects progressive sedimentation, despite the irregular outer morphology of the deposits. Detailed radiocarbon analysis demonstrates that stratigraphies are intact: 14C ages become successively younger upwards in the deposits. Fatty acid and n‐alcohol composition was determined on samples from eight mumiyo deposits. Dominance of low molecular weight compounds (C14 to C18) points to a dietary signal; however, the relatively low proportions of unsaturated compounds compared to fresh stomach oils indicates some postdepositional degradation. We found marine diatoms in the mumiyo, which potentially provide a proxy for sea ice conditions in the foraging habitat of the petrels. Age ranges of the investigated deposits suggest occupation of the analyzed sites by snow petrels from 17 ka to >58 ka. Changes in deposition rates point to higher occupation frequency in Petermann Range from 46 to 42 ka compared to the late marine isotope stage 3 and the Last Glacial Maximum.

Recent investigations of electroweak radiative corrections have revealed the importance of higher order contributions in high energy processes, where the size of typical corrections can exceed those ...associated with QCD considerably. Beyond one loop, only universal (angular independent) corrections are known to all orders except for massless \(e^+ e^- \rightarrow f {\overline f}\) processes, where also angle dependent corrections exist in the literature. In this paper we present general arguments for the consistent resummation of angle dependent subleading (SL) logarithmic corrections to all orders in the regime where all invariants are still large compared to the gauge boson masses. We discuss soft isospin correlations, fermion mass and gauge boson mass gap effects, the longitudinal and Higgs boson sector as well as mixing contributions including CKM effects for massive quarks. Two loop results for the right handed Standard Model are generalized in the context of the high energy effective theory based on the standard model Lagrangian in the symmetric basis with the appropriate matching conditions to include the soft QED regime. The result is expressed in exponentiated operator form in a CKM extended isospin space in the symmetric basis. Thus, a full electroweak SL treatment based on the infrared evolution equation method is formulated for arbitrary high energy processes at future colliders. Comparisons with known results are presented.
