Michelle L. Stefano is a Folklife Specialist (Research and Programs) at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC. From 2011-2016, Stefano worked for Maryland Traditions, the folklife program of the state of Maryland, of which she was its Co-Director from 2015-2016. From 2012-2016, she led the partnership between Maryland Traditions and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she was Visiting Assistant Professor in American Studies. She co-edited Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage (2012) with Peter Davis and Gerard Corsane.
Peter Davis is Emeritus Professor of Museology in the International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies at Newcastle University, UK. He is honorary editor of Archives of Natural History , the journal of the Society for the History of Natural History, and a series editor for Heritage Matters . His research interests include the interactions between nature, culture and concepts of place and space. He has published widely on ecomuseums and intangible cultural heritage.

The emergence of the novel ß-coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has resulted in a global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Clinical studies have ...documented that potentially severe neurological symptoms are associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, thereby suggesting direct CNS penetration by the virus. Prior studies have demonstrated that the destructive neurological effects of rabies virus (RABV) infections are mediated by CNS transport of the virus tightly bound to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). By comparison, it has been hypothesized that a similar mechanism exists to explain the multiple neurological effects of SARS-CoV-2 via binding to peripheral nAChRs followed by orthograde or retrograde transport into the CNS. Genetic engineering of the RABV has been employed to generate novel vaccines consisting of non-replicating RABV particles expressing chimeric capsid proteins containing human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV), Ebolavirus, and hepatitis C virus (HCV) sequences. Accordingly, we present a critical discussion that integrates lessons learned from prior RABV research and vaccine development into a working model of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine that selectively targets and neutralizes CNS penetration of a tightly bound viral nAChR complex.
This paper explores the importance of ethnographic approaches to cultural documentation and corresponding preservation processes, and in enhancing inclusivity and 'representational belonging' of ...diverse communities and cultures in the archival context. Specifically, we trace past and present efforts of folklorists, archivists, and librarians at the American Folklife Center in the Library of Congress, to increase representation in and access to the Center's archives and related programming. As a cultural heritage institution at the national level, and home to one of the largest ethnographic archives in the world, we examine how enriching representation is at heart about ethical and equitable recognition, inclusion, and uplifting of diverse voices, firsthand experiences and stories, particularly those of marginalised communities and groups, as shared in their words and on their terms. We conclude with a new initiative dedicated to advancing community control of and self-representation in ethnographic research, documentation, and archival projects, including the Center's archives. Our discussions aim to align with broader movements to decolonise heritage institutions, their collections, and practice, especially at the national level.
The article examines the process of promoting, with a view to safeguarding, the centuries-old Singing and Praying Bands living tradition, an African American musical and spiritual expression that is ...distinctive to the Chesapeake Bay region of the US. Discussed within the context of US public folklore, the process is understood as a co-intervention, representing an active partnership between the Bands' community and public folklorists (including the authors) in attempting to reach new members as a means of keeping it alive. The article underscores the need for 'bottom-up' approaches in safeguarding living cultural traditions, bringing to light the potential strengths of public folklore work and the benefits its theories and methodologies can bring to the intangible cultural heritage discourse. Moreover, it analyses how community agency has been exercised, and community needs accommodated, through the dialogue-driven, collaborative intervention process. It also investigates how a nuanced view of 'authenticity' has been shaped, with regard to changes the living tradition has undergone, and is currently understood by those who embody it.

Mytilus edulis was studied. Exposure of excised ...ganglia to morphine for 24 h resulted in a significant dose-dependent decrease in rnicroglial egress that was naloxone sensitive. In coincubating the excised ganglia with morphine and the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, N omega-nitro-
l-arginine methyl ester (
l-NAME), an increase in microglial egress was observed, suggesting that morphine may stimulate microglia to release NO. Morphine exposure to these cells in vitro resulted in NO release (39.4 ± 4.9 nM), a phenomenon found to be naloxone sensitive (10
−6 M; NO level = 5.9 ± 2.6 nM) and
l-NAME sensitive (10
−4 M; NO level = 2.8 ± 1.8 nM). Opioid peptides did not stimulate NO release, indicating that the process was mediated by the opiate alkaloid selective
μ

receptor. Coincubation of microglia with
l-arginine or the superoxide scavenger, superoxide dismutase, resulted in significantly higher NO levels observed following morphine stimulation. Taken together, the data demonstrate that morphine can stimulate NO release in cells obtained from an invertebrate that represents an animal 500 million years divergent in evolution from man, underscoring the significance of this process and further substantiating the critical importance of morphine as a naturally occurring signal molecule.

The results of this study lend strong support to the concept of the existence in insects and molluscs of a distinctive class of neuroglial cells comparable to vertebrate microglia. The evidence ...presented is as valid as that used in reference to the separate status of vertebrate microglia-i.e., the demonstration of a close structural and functional relationship of these cells with cells of the immune system. As in vertebrates, the excision of ganglia from three invertebrate species (the molluscs Planorbarius corneus and Mytilus edulis and the insect Leucophaea maderae) and their maintenance in incubation media led to an exodus of small cells and their accumulation in the culture dish. During this process, they underwent conformational changes from stellate to rounded, and then to more or less ameboid, comparable to those indicative of the process of activation in the animals' immunocytes. Functional characteristics which these translocated microglia-like cells share with immunocytes are motility, phagocytotic activity, and adherence to the culture dish. Furthermore, the two cells have certain biochemical features in common-e.g., the presence of certain cytokines and (at least in Planorbarius) that of corticotropin. An additional phenomenon of particular interest for the classification of microglial elements is their response to morphine. At 10(6) M, this drug decreases not only the number of cells emerging from the excised ganglia but also the degree of their transformation to the "active" ameboid form. This dose-dependent and naloxone-sensitive effect of morphine on microglial cells parallels that on activated immunocytes of the same species. Corresponding results demonstrating an inhibitory effect of morphine on mobilized microglial cells of the frog Rana pipiens indicate that this relationship between the two cell types under consideration also exists in vertebrates
As international awareness of the importance of intangibleheritage grows, the issue of how it can be effectivelysafeguarded has been increasingly debated. In recent years,museums have been called ...upon to engage more withintangibles due to their shared concerns for both culture andpreservation. However, traditional museology has tended tofocus on tangible expressions of heritage as opposed tothose of an intangible, or living,nature. In response to thisdebate, the following paper brings to light five key obstaclesfacing six museums in the North East of England with regardto safeguarding intangible heritage. Uncovering theseobstacles has been achieved through an analysis of datafrom policies and documents, observation and in-depthinterviews with professionals holding high levels ofresponsibility within these institutions. It is argued thatthese key obstacles, including the perceptions, efforts andlimitations on which they are based, can negatively affect theeffectiveness of safeguarding approaches with respect tointangible heritage.
