U većini zemalja svijeta kobilje mlijeko oduvijek je bilo cijenjeno zbog svojih ljekovitih svojstava pa se danas sve više koristi u prehrambenoj, kozmetičkoj i farmaceutskoj industriji, te kao ...zamjena humanom mlijeku u prehrani novorođenčadi. Procjenjuje se da oko 30 milijuna ljudi u svijetu konzumira kobilje mlijeko. Posljednjih godina kobilje mlijeko postaje i u Hrvatskoj sve interesantniji proizvod zbog svog specifičnog sastava i svojstava. Kobilje mlijeko danas je predmet brojnih istraživanja i rasprava zbog optimalnog omjera kazeina i proteina sirutke te visoke probavljivosti, što ga čini prihvatljivim za prehranu dojenčadi. Cilj rada je prikazati kemijski sastav te najvažnija svojstva kobiljeg mlijeka kao i mogućnosti njegove primjene. Zbog visokog udjela proteina mliječnog seruma, kobilje mlijeko je bogat izvor esencijalnih aminokiselina i pogodno je za prehranu ljudi. Lipidi kobiljeg mlijeka sadrže manje triacilglicerola (oko 80 %) za razliku od humanog i kravljeg mlijeka (oko 98 % u oba mlijeka), dok je veći udio fosfolipida (oko 5 %) i slobodnih masnih kiselina (oko 9 %) u usporedbi s kravljim i humanim mlijekom. Kobilje mlijeko sadrži visoku koncentraciju višestruko nezasićenih masnih kiselina, nizak sadržaj kolesterola, visok udio laktoze te vitamina A, B i C.
To determine whether the EP4 receptor for prostaglandin E sub(2) (PGE sub(2)) contributes to the tumor promoting activity of PGs in murine skin, EP4 over-expressing mice (BK5.EP4) were generated and ...subjected carcinogenesis protocols. An initiation/promotion protocol resulted in 25-fold more squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) in the BK5.EP4 mice than wild type (WT) mice. An increase in SCCs also occurred following treatment with initiator alone or UV irradiation. The initiator dimethylbenzaanthracene caused cytotoxicity in BK5.EP4, but not WT mice, characterized by sloughing of the interfollicular epidermis, regeneration and subsequent SCC development. A comparison of transcriptomes between BK5.EP4 and WT mice treated with PGE sub(2) showed a significant upregulation of a number of genes known to be associated with tumor development, supporting a pro-tumorigenic role for the EP4 receptor.
The levels of several microbial groups of aerobic mesophilic flora, aerobic psychrotrophic flora, lactic acid bacteria, Micrococcaceae, enterococci, Enterobacteriaceae, and molds and yeasts were ...investigated during the manufacture of fresh white cheese of a Serbian craft variety without the addition of starter culture. This variety of cheese is made in farmhouses from cow, sheep and goat's milk. White fresh cheese from mountain villages of Serbia has economical importance for this area. The study of the microbial characteristics of this cheese constitutes the first step towards the establishment of a starter culture which would allow the making of a product both more uniform and safer. The total microbial counts were high in these variety of cheeses. Almost all the microbial groups reached their maximum counts in curd. Lactic acid bacteria were the major microbial group, reaching count similar to the total aerobic mesophilic flora at all sampling points. Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis dominated in milk (62,5%) of the isolates obtained in the Man Rogosa Sharpe (MRS) agar at these sampling points, while the Lactobacillus casei subs. casei was the most predominant species (83,5% of isolates obtained at these sampling points). The purpose of this study was to investigate the microflora of white cheeses with special emphasis on the autochthonous lactic acid bacteria involved in fermentation of this cheeses depending on the geographical location where the cheeses were manufactured.
Determining the urea concentration in milk is a useful indicator of the nutritional protein status of the organism as well as of the ratio between the energy and the protein in ruminant rations, with ...increasing practical usage. In addition to nutrition, milk urea concentration is influenced by a whole range of factors, for example: breed, stage and number of lactations, body weight, daily production and chemical composition of milk, somatic cell count, season and milking. The objective of this research was to determine the impact of the cow breed (Holstein and Simmental), the number of lactation (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th), milking time (morning-evening) and season (spring-summer and autumn-winter) on milk urea concentration. The following was determined for each breed: daily milk yield, milk fat, protein and lactose content, urea concentration and somatic cell count in milk. Statistical data processing was carried out by applying General Linear Model procedure, SAS system (1999). The cow breed had a significant influence on daily milk yield and log somatic cell count (P<0.001), lactose content in milk (P<0.01), milk fat content and milk urea concentration (P<0.05). The number of lactations significantly influenced daily milk yield (P<0.001), protein content (P<0.001 and P<0.01) and milk urea concentration, but only for Holstein breed (P<0.05). Milking time significantly influenced the fat and protein content (P<0.001) in the milk of Holstein cows, that is, lactose content (P<0.05) and urea concentration (P<0.05) in the milk of Simmental cows. The season significantly influenced the fat and protein content of milk (P<0.001), that is, urea concentration and log somatic cell count (P<0.01). Determining of urea concentration in cow milk should also be systematically conducted in the Republic of Croatia, in order to determine standard physiological values characteristical for a particular cow breed, aiming to determine the balance of energy and protein in rations.
Complex microbiological and biochemical changes take place during cheese ripening process, having a significant impact on the formation of organoleptic characteristics of the final product. ...Proteolytic enzymes degraded casein to larger and smaller peptides and free amino acids. The quantity and the ratios of particular amino acids and soluble peptides significantly influence the texture and organoleptic properties of cheese. The products of amino acid degradation in cheese are alcohols, aldehydes, esters, acids and sulphur compounds, which form specific aromas of various cheese types. More than 200 different volatile components have been identified in cheese. Cheese flavour is concentrated in the watersoluble fraction (peptides, amino acids, organic acids and amines), while aroma is mainly concentrated in the volatile fraction (organic acids, aldehydes, amines, esters). Many cheeses contain the same or similar components, but in different concentrations and ratios. Specific characteristics of cheese aroma are not based only on one specific compound, but on combination of different compounds produced in the maturing process. The technological process of cheese production can be accelerated and modified by influencing proteolytic processes, which are therefore the subject of intense research.

The silicon tracker (SCT) is part of the inner detector at the ATLAS experiment at CERN. Its basic building blocks are 5 different types of silicon strip modules. In total more than 15000 p-on-n ...single-sided silicon strip sensors of an area of about 61 m 2 were used to produce 4088 SCT modules. An overall module production yield of 92% could be achieved, where the silicon modules comply with the tight electrical, thermal and mechanical specifications. The macro-assembly of 2112 barrel modules to the four barrel support cylinders was successfully carried out. The nine disks of one endcap are fully populated with 988 modules, and for the second endcap more than 50% of the modules are already mounted. Test results operating complete barrels will be presented as well as a description of the test setup. The different integration steps of the SCT with the surrounding transition radiation tracker (TRT) will be explained. The installation of SCT and TRT into the ATLAS pit will happen during 2006

Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) are used as alternative diesel fuel originating from renewable sources. The attention is focused on the materials that do not compete with food and feed production. ...Algae have a significant potential as an alternative biodiesel feedstock. In comparison to other crops, they have the advantage in very fast reproduction cycles, enhanced resistance to high UV radiation doses and higher effectiveness of energy conversion to biomass due to low demands on other metabolic functions. Moreover, they fix waste CO2 very efficiently. The key problem is to destroy the algae cell in order to obtain the oil. In this work, the results of FAME preparation from received algae oils are presented. This study confirms that Nannochloropsis and Chlorella microalgae provide valuable triacyglycerols for the biofuel production. Characteristics of prepared FAME meet the EN 14 214 standard requirements. However, FAME from algae oil may exhibit impaired oxidative stability due to higher level of unsaturation.
