Differences in domestication and selection processes have contributed to considerable phenotypic and genotypic differences between Bos taurus and Bos indicus cattle breeds. Of particular interest in ...tropical and subtropical production environments are those genetic differences between subspecies that underlie the phenotypic extremes in tolerance and susceptibility to parasite infection. In general, B. taurus cattle are more susceptible to ectoparasites than B. indicus cattle in tropical environments, and much of this difference is under genetic control. To identify genomic regions involved in tick resistance, we developed a B. taurus x B. indicus F₂ experimental population to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for resistance to the Riphicephalus (Boophilus) microplus tick. About 300 individuals were measured for parasite load in two seasons (rainy and dry) and genotyped for 23 microsatellite markers covering chromosomes 5, 7 and 14. We mapped a suggestive chromosome-wide QTL for tick load in the rainy season (P < 0.05) on chromosome 5. For the dry season, suggestive (P < 0.10) chromosome-wide QTL were mapped on chromosomes 7 and 14. The additive effect of the QTL on chromosome 14 corresponds to 3.18% of the total observed phenotypic variance. Our QTL-mapping study has identified different genomic regions controlling tick resistance; these QTL were dependent upon the season in which the ticks were counted, suggesting that the QTL in question may depend on environmental factors.
Primary succession is an ecological process of fundamental importance referring to the development of vegetation on areas not previously occupied by a plant community. The bulk of knowledge on ...primary succession comes from areas affected by relatively recent volcanic eruptions, and highlights the importance of symbiosis between host plants and fungi for the initial stages of succession. Arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM) are of particular interest as they are often present from the very beginning of primary succession and because they show different relationships with pioneer and late-successional species, which suggests they may be involved in important, yet unknown, ecological mechanisms of succession. We review existing knowledge based on case studies from the volcanic desert of Mount Fuji, Japan, where primary succession was examined intensively and which represents one of the best-known cases on the role of AM in primary succession. We also assess the potential of sand dunes and semi-arid, erosion-prone systems for addressing the role of mycorrhizas in primary succession. Analyzing primary succession under different ecological systems is critical to understand the role of AM in this basic process. While volcanoes and glaciers are restricted to particular mountainous areas, naturally eroded areas and sand dunes are more common and easily accessible, making them attractive models to study primary succession.
The mathematical development and application of two discrete element methods for analyzing the material flow of granular media is described. These two discrete element methods model the ...noncircular-shaped particles with analytical surface representations. 2D particles are modeled with a superquadric equation and 3D particles as ellipsoids. Two examples are then presented to illustrate the applicability of these techniques in engineering analysis. These examples include (1) flow of particulate media in a rotating drum; and (2) flow of ore material in an inclined ore pass system.
Abstract
Background
It has been reported that left atrial (LA) phasic function, evaluated by LA strain, is associated with cardiogenic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). There are no ...well-established echocardiographic findings to predict peri-operative stroke in AF ablation.
Purpose
The aim is to evaluate between LA strain and peri-operative stroke in AF ablation.
Methods
This study included 103 consecutive AF patients (90 paroxysmal and 13 non-paroxysmal AF cases) who underwent initial cryo-ablation without interruption of peri-operative anticoagulation from January 2019 to August 2022. Pre-operative echocardiography was used to measure the LA strain items: LA reservoir strain, contractile strain, and conduit strain in sinus rhythm. Twenty-three patients were excluded due to AF rhythm and atrial septal defect. Peri-operative stroke was detected by using magnetic resonance imaging on the day after ablation.
Results
Peri-operative stroke occurred in 9 patients (11.3%), and there was no symptomatic stroke. In univariate analysis, age (69.6 ± 4.8 years vs. 64.2 ± 10.9 years, p<0.05) and log brain natriuretic peptide (1.61 ± 0.26 vs. 1.32 ± 0.42 p<0.05) were significantly higher in the stroke group. On the other hand, LA reservoir strain (20.9 ± 5.6% vs. 29.8 ± 8.3%, p<0.01) and LA conduit strain (10.9 ± 2.3% vs. 15.9 ± 7.0%, p<0.01) in the stroke group was significantly lower compared with the non-stroke group. There were no significant differences in the rate of intra-operative electrical cardioversion and other clinical parameters between both groups. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that LA reservoir strain cut-off value of 22.7% provided a c-statistic of 0.82 for predicting peri-operative stroke in AF ablation.

Although endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for early gastric cancer (EGC) without ulceration or scarring has been very popular in Japan and thought to be beneficial, curability by EMR is still lower ...than that for surgical resection. We investigated patients whose EGCs were resected endoscopically in order to identify the factors affecting curability by EMR.
We investigated retrospectively 256 EGC lesions (251 patients) which were subjected to EMR between 1989 and 1998 with respect to patient profile, macroscopic type, location, maximum diameter of tumors, resection method and histological typing. The prognoses of the patients were also investigated as far as possible.
The curative total resection rate for EMR of EGC was 74.2 %. Concerning the factors affecting curability, the size of the lesion (over 15 mm), the method of resection (divisional resection), and histological typing (poorly differentiated) had a statistically significant effect on the complete resection rate. Multivariate analysis of the factors confirmed these results. Submucosal invasion was suspected in 16 patients after EMR, but submucosal cancer was found in only one patient after further surgery. Where there was recurrence, the longest recurrence-free period after EMR of EGC was 48 months, whereas the mean recurrence-free period was 195.4 days.
The appropriate indication for EMR for EGC is thought to be an intramucosal differentiated-type adenocarcinoma without ulceration or scarring, and no more than 15 mm in size regardless of macroscopic type. Periodic follow-up for at least 5 years is necessary.

Background
Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients are known to suffer from a higher risk of adverse outcomes following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) despite of low-density lipoprotein ...cholesterol (LDL-C)-lowering therapy with statins. Thus, identification of factors that may occurrence of new lesions following PCI in DM patients treated with strong statin is clinically important. Although LDL-C is generally calculated using the Friedewald equation method LDL-C (F), the effects of LDL-C measured by the Martin method LDL-C (M) or non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) on the occurrence of new lesions on coronary angiography after PCI among stable angina patients with DM receiving treatment with strong statins are unknown.
Purpose
The aim of the present study was to investigate the clinical factor on the occurrence of new lesions in stable angina patients with DM at 9-month follow-up coronary angiography and within 2 years after PCI.
Methods
The subject was 313 consecutive stable angina patients with DM who were admitted to undergo PCI. All patients had undergone successfully elective PCI using second-generation drug-eluting stents and intravascular ultrasound, and had been prescribed strong statins regardless dyslipidemia more than 2 week before PCI. We investigated the clinical factor on the occurrence of new lesions with myocardial ischemia. We estimated LDL-C (F), LDL-C (M), and non-HDL-C in this study. Acute coronary syndrome and hemodialysis patients were excluded from this study.
Results
Median of age and level of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were 69 years (62–76) and 6.8% (6.3–7.3). New lesions appeared 9-month follow-up coronary angiography New lesion(+) 9-month and within 2 years New lesion(+) 2-year after PCI in 19 (6%) and 62 (20%) patients, respectively. The rate of history of smoking, using of β-blocker, and non-HDL-C ≥100 mg/dL and level of HbA1c were significantly higher in the New lesion(+) 9-month group than those in the New lesion(−) 9-month group after PCI. Age, level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and triglyceride, frequencies of LDL-C (F) ≥70 mg/dL, LDL-C (M) ≥70 mg/dL and non-HDL-C ≥100 mg/dL were significantly higher in the New lesion(+) 2-year group than those in the New lesion(−) 2-year group after PCI. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated only non-HDL-C ≥100 mg/dL was associated with the occurrence of new lesions both 9-month and within 2 years 9-month: hazard ratio (HR) 4.25, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.30–19.23, p=0.014 and 2-year: HR 2.30, 95% CI 1.24–4.45, p=0.010.
Conclusion
Only non-HDL-C ≥100 mg/dL was an independently associated with the occurrence of new lesions both 9-month and within 2 years after PCI in stable angina patients with DM treated with strong statins. Residual risk after PCI in DM patients should be considered by assessing non-HDL-C beyond the scope of LDL-C-lowering therapy with strong statins.

Bishomocholic acid (2), which has a side chain that is longer by two methylene unit ...than cholic acid (1), includes many organic substances at 1:1 host:guest ratios. X-ray crystallographic studies revealed that 2 has two types of open host frameworks: a bilayer type and a crossing type. Both of them are isostructural to those of 1, indicating that they are robust against the elongation of the side chain. In the former type, the increment of the width of the host channel corresponds to that of the length of the molecular structures. Larger aromatic guest components such as 1-methylnaphthalene and 1-tetralone, are included in 2, but not in 1.
Mycoplasma mobile glides on solid surfaces by the repeated binding of leg structures to sialylated oligosaccharide fixed on a solid surface. To obtain information about the propulsion caused by the ...leg, we made elongated and stiff cells using a detergent. Within 30 min after the cells were treated with 0.1% Tween 60, the cells were elongated from 0.8 μm to 2.2 μm in length while maintaining their gliding activity. Fluorescence and electron microscopy showed that a part of the cytoskeletal structure was elongated, while the localization of proteins involved in the gliding was not modified significantly. The elongated cells glided with repeated pivoting around the cellular position of gliding machinery by 10 degrees of amplitude at a frequency of 2 to 3 times per second, suggesting that the propulsion in a line perpendicular to the cell axis can occur with different timings. The pivoting speed decreased as the cell length increased, probably from the load generated by the friction. The torque required to achieve the actual pivoting increased with the cell length without saturation, reaching 54.7 pN nm at 4.3 μm in cell length.
From 1992 onwards, outbreaks of a previously unknown illness have been reported in Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) kept in maricultures in Southeast Asia. The most striking symptom of this emerging ...disease is the loss of scales. It was referred to as scale drop syndrome, but the etiology remained enigmatic. By using a next-generation virus discovery technique, VIDISCA-454, sequences of an unknown virus were detected in serum of diseased fish. The near complete genome sequence of the virus was determined, which shows a unique genome organization, and low levels of identity to known members of the Iridoviridae. Based on homology of a series of putatively encoded proteins, the virus is a novel member of the Megalocytivirus genus of the Iridoviridae family. The virus was isolated and propagated in cell culture, where it caused a cytopathogenic effect in infected Asian seabass kidney and brain cells. Electron microscopy revealed icosahedral virions of about 140 nm, characteristic for the Iridoviridae. In vitro cultured virus induced scale drop syndrome in Asian seabass in vivo and the virus could be reisolated from these infected fish. These findings show that the virus is the causative agent for the scale drop syndrome, as each of Koch's postulates is fulfilled. We have named the virus Scale Drop Disease Virus. Vaccines prepared from BEI- and formalin inactivated virus, as well as from E. coli produced major capsid protein provide efficacious protection against scale drop disease.
