The argument that human society can decouple economic growth-defined as growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP)-from growth in environmental impacts is appealing. If such decoupling is possible, it ...means that GDP growth is a sustainable societal goal. Here we show that the decoupling concept can be interpreted using an easily understood model of economic growth and environmental impact. The simple model is compared to historical data and modelled projections to demonstrate that growth in GDP ultimately cannot be decoupled from growth in material and energy use. It is therefore misleading to develop growth-oriented policy around the expectation that decoupling is possible. We also note that GDP is increasingly seen as a poor proxy for societal wellbeing. GDP growth is therefore a questionable societal goal. Society can sustainably improve wellbeing, including the wellbeing of its natural assets, but only by discarding GDP growth as the goal in favor of more comprehensive measures of societal wellbeing.
This paper critically assesses if accessible lithium resources are sufficient for expanded demand due to lithium battery electric vehicles. The ultimately recoverable resources (URR) of lithium ...globally were estimated at between 19.3 (Case 1) and 55.0 (Case 3) Mt Li; Best Estimate (BE) was 23.6 Mt Li. The Mohr 2010 model was modified to project lithium supply. The Case 1 URR scenario indicates sufficient lithium for a 77% maximum penetration of lithium battery electric vehicles in 2080 whereas supply is adequate to beyond 2200 in the Case 3 URR scenario. Global lithium demand approached a maximum of 857 kt Li/y, with a 100% penetration of lithium vehicles, 3.5 people per car and 10 billion population.
The simulated effects of anthropogenic global warming have become important in many fields and most models agree that significant impacts are becoming unavoidable in the face of slow action. ...Improvements to model accuracy rely primarily on the refinement of parameter sensitivities and on plausible future carbon emissions trajectories. Carbon emissions are the leading cause of global warming, yet current considerations of future emissions do not consider structural limits to fossil fuel supply, invoking a wide range of uncertainty. Moreover, outdated assumptions regarding the future abundance of fossil energy could contribute to misleading projections of both economic growth and climate change vulnerability. Here we present an easily replicable mathematical model that considers fundamental supply-side constraints and demonstrate its use in a stochastic analysis to produce a theoretical upper limit to future emissions. The results show a significant reduction in prior uncertainty around projected long term emissions, and even assuming high estimates of all fossil fuel resources and high growth of unconventional production, cumulative emissions tend to align to the current medium emissions scenarios in the second half of this century. This significant finding provides much-needed guidance on developing relevant emissions scenarios for long term climate change impact studies.

The chemical complexity of atmospheric organic aerosol (OA) has caused substantial uncertainties in understanding its origins and environmental impacts. Here, we provide constraints on OA origins ...through compositional characterization with molecular-level details. Our results suggest that secondary OA (SOA) from monoterpene oxidation accounts for approximately half of summertime fine OA in Centreville, AL, a forested area in the southeastern United States influenced by anthropogenic pollution. We find that different chemical processes involving nitrogen oxides, during days and nights, play a central role in determining the mass of monoterpene SOA produced. These findings elucidate the strong anthropogenic–biogenic interaction affecting ambient aerosol in the southeastern United States and point out the importance of reducing anthropogenic emissions, especially under a changing climate, where biogenic emissions will likely keep increasing.
Malignant transformation results from accumulation of genetic and epigenetic events. Functional studies of cancer will be crucial to our understanding of its complexity and polymorphism. There is no ...doubt that emerging genomic and proteomic technologies will facilitate such investigations. Microarray technology is a new and efficient approach to extract data of biomedical relevance for a wide range of applications. In cancer research, it will provide high-throughput and valuable insights into differences in an individual's tumor as compared with constitutional DNA, mRNA expression, and protein expression and activity. Across individuals, comparisons could provide tissue-specific disease signatures that provide diagnosis based on hundreds of informative genes. The resulting product should be a wealth of tumor-associated and tumor-specific biomarkers, which may help in cancer etiology, diagnosis, and therapy and ultimately lead to "molecular nosology" of cancers. This review highlights the recent developments in microarray technologies in cancer research, focuses on the results obtained so far, and describes the eventual use of microarray technology for clinical applications.
Types 1 and 3 iodothyronine deiodinases are known to be selenocysteine-containing enzymes. Although a putative human type 2 iodothyronine deiodinase (D2) gene (hDio2) encoding a similar selenoprotein ...has been identified, basal D2 activity is not selenium (Se)-dependent nor has D2 been labeled with (75)Se. A human mesothelioma cell line (MSTO-211H) has recently been shown to have approximately 40-fold higher levels of hDio2 mRNA than mesothelial cells. Mesothelioma cell lysates activate thyroxine (T(4)) to 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine with typical characteristics of D2 such as low K(m) (T(4)), 1.3 nm, resistance to propylthiouracil, and a short half-life ( approximately 30 min). D2 activity is approximately 30-fold higher in Se-supplemented than in Se-depleted medium. An antiserum prepared against a peptide deduced from the Dio2 mRNA sequence precipitates a (75)Se protein of the predicted 31-kDa size from (75)Se-labeled mesothelioma cells. Bromoadenosine 3'5' cyclic monophosphate increases D2 activity and (75)Se-p31 approximately 2.5-fold whereas substrate (T(4)) reduces both D2 activity and (75)Se-p31 approximately 2-3-fold. MG132 or lactacystin (10 microm), inhibitors of the proteasome pathway by which D2 is degraded, increase both D2 activity and (75)Se-p31 3-4-fold and prevent the loss of D2 activity during cycloheximide or substrate (T(4)) exposure. Immunocytochemical studies with affinity-purified anti-hD2 antibody show a Se-dependent increase in immunofluorescence. Thus, human D2 is encoded by hDio2 and is a member of the selenodeiodinase family accounting for its highly catalytic efficiency in T(4) activation.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive serosal tumor, strongly associated with former exposure to asbestos fibers and for which there is currently no effective treatment available. In ...human, MPM is characterized by a high local invasiveness, poor prognosis and therapeutic outcomes. In order to assess molecular changes that specify this phenotype, we performed a global gene expression profiling of human MPM. Using a 10,000-element microarray, we analyzed mRNA relative gene expression levels by comparing a mesothelioma cell line to either a pleural cell line or tumor specimens. To analyze these gene expression data, we used various bioinformatics softwares. Hierarchical clustering methods were used to group genes and samples with similar expression in an unsupervised mode. Genes of known function were further sorted by enzyme, function and pathway clusters using a supervised software (IncyteGenomics). Taken together, these data defined a molecular fingerprint of human MPM with more than 700 up- or down-regulated genes related to several traits of the malignant phenotype, specially associated with MPM invasiveness, protection and resistance to anticancer defenses. This portrait is meaningful in disease classification and management, and relevant in finding new specific markers of MPM. These molecular markers should improve the accuracy of mesothelioma diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.
