Context.
The sub-Jovian, or Neptunian, desert is a previously identified region of parameter space where there is a relative dearth of intermediate-mass planets with short orbital periods.
Aims.
We ...present the discovery of a new transiting planetary system within the Neptunian desert, NGTS-14.
Methods.
Transits of NGTS-14Ab were discovered in photometry from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). Follow-up transit photometry was conducted from several ground-based facilities, as well as extracted from TESS full-frame images. We combine radial velocities from the HARPS spectrograph with the photometry in a global analysis to determine the system parameters.
Results.
NGTS-14Ab has a radius that is about 30 per cent larger than that of Neptune (0.444 ± 0.030
R
Jup
) and is around 70 per cent more massive than Neptune (0.092 ± 0.012
M
Jup
). It transits the main-sequence K1 star, NGTS-14A, with a period of 3.54 days, just far away enough to have maintained at least some of its primordial atmosphere. We have also identified a possible long-period stellar mass companion to the system, NGTS-14B, and we investigate the binarity of exoplanet host stars inside and outside the Neptunian desert using
Gaia
.
ABSTRACT
In this paper, we present high-resolution spectroscopic transit observations from ESPRESSO of the super-Neptune WASP-166 b. In addition to spectroscopic ESPRESSO data, we analyse photometric ...data from TESS of six WASP-166 b transits along with simultaneous NGTS observations of the ESPRESSO runs. These observations were used to fit for the planetary parameters as well as assessing the level of stellar activity (e.g. spot crossings, flares) present during the ESPRESSO observations. We utilize the reloaded Rossiter McLaughlin (RRM) technique to spatially resolve the stellar surface, characterizing the centre-to-limb convection-induced variations, and to refine the star–planet obliquity. We find WASP-166 b has a projected obliquity of $\lambda = -15.52^{+2.85}_{-2.76}\, ^{\circ }$ and vsin (i) = 4.97 ± 0.09 km s−1 which is consistent with the literature. We were able to characterize centre-to-limb convective variations as a result of granulation on the surface of the star on the order of a few km s−1 for the first time. We modelled the centre-to-limb convective variations using a linear, quadratic, and cubic model with the cubic being preferred. In addition, by modelling the differential rotation and centre-to-limb convective variations simultaneously, we were able to retrieve a potential antisolar differential rotational shear (α ∼ −0.5) and stellar inclination (i* either 42.03$^{+9.13}_{-9.60}\, ^{\circ }$ or 133.64$^{+8.42}_{-7.98}\, ^{\circ }$ if the star is pointing towards or away from us). Finally, we investigate how the shape of the cross-correlation functions change as a function of limb angle and compare our results to magnetohydrodynamic simulations.
•Detecting M. bovis antibodies in cattle sera after a tuberculin skin test (TST) may improve bovine tuberculosis control.•Used as an anamnestic test, the ELISA reported herein had high levels of ...specificity and positive predictive value.•The ELISA fulfilled the World Organization for Animal Health criteria.•This serological ELISA used 15–17 days after a negative TST could be used on dairy farms to improve livestock health.
Programs for the eradication of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) focus on the tuberculin skin test (TST) and slaughter of reactor cattle. However, the disease remains an animal health concern in several countries and improving the efficiency of the TST has become a critical issue. The detection of Mycobacterium bovis antibodies in serum, within weeks after the TST, may be a rapid and inexpensive way to improve bTB control. This study reports the validation of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect bovine tuberculosis as an ancillary test to TST in dairy farms in Argentina.
The estimated validation parameters were within the established requirements of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The test demonstrated high repeatability, with coefficients of variation <25%. High test reproducibility through interlaboratory testing was also found, with an estimated Pearson coefficient of 0.9648 (95% confidence intervals 0.9315–0.9820). The ELISA detected tuberculous cattle unidentified by the TST. Of 43 animals sent to slaughterhouses that were ELISA positive 15–17 days after a negative TST, 36 were confirmed as infected with M. bovis by histopathology and IS6110 PCR. According to ROC curve analysis of results of 145 cattle from M. bovis-free herds and the 36 M. bovis-infected cattle, at a corrected optical density cut-off point of 0.3853, specificity was 95.95% and the positive predictive value at this cut-off was 83.72%. The ELISA detection test validated in this study could be readily applied in dairy farms, to complement a prior TST and improve livestock health.
Context . Long-period transiting exoplanets bridge the gap between the bulk of transit- and Doppler-based exoplanet discoveries, providing key insights into the formation and evolution of planetary ...systems. The wider separation between these planets and their host stars results in the exoplanets typically experiencing less radiation from their host stars; hence, they should maintain more of their original atmospheres, which can be probed during transit via transmission spectroscopy. Although the known population of long-period transiting exoplanets is relatively sparse, surveys performed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) are now discovering new exoplanets to fill in this crucial region of the exoplanetary parameter space. Aims . This study aims to characterise a new long-period transiting exoplanet by following up on a single-transit candidate found in the TESS mission. Methods . The TOI-4862 system was monitored using a combination of photometric instruments (TESS, NGTS, and EulerCam) and spectroscopic instruments (CORALIE, FEROS, HARPS, and PFS) in order to determine the period, radius, and mass of the long-period transiting exoplanet NGTS-30 b/TOI-4862 b. These observations were then fitted simultaneously to determine precise values for the properties and orbital parameters of the exoplanet, as well as the refined stellar parameters of the host star. Results . We present the discovery of a long-period ( P = 98.29838 ± 0.00010 day) Jupiter-sized (0.928 ± 0.032 R J ; 0.960 ± 0.056 M J ) planet transiting a 1.1 Gyr old G-type star, one of the youngest warm Jupiters discovered to date. NGTS-30 b/TOI-4862 b has a moderate eccentricity (0.294 −0.010 +0.014 ), meaning that its equilibrium temperature can be expected to vary from 274 −46 +30 K to 500 −84 +55 K over the course of its orbit. Through interior modelling, NGTS-30 b/TOI-4862b was found to have a heavy element mass fraction of 0.23 −0.06 +0.05 and a heavy element enrichment ( Z p / Z ★ ) of 20 −6 +5 , making it metal-enriched compared to its host star. Conclusions . NGTS-30 b/TOI-4862 b is one of the youngest well-characterised long-period exoplanets found to date and will therefore be important in the quest to understanding the formation and evolution of exoplanets across the full range of orbital separations and ages.
ABSTRACT
In this paper, we present observations of two high-resolution transit data sets obtained with ESPRESSO of the bloated sub-Saturn planet WASP-131 b. We have simultaneous photometric ...observations with NGTS and EulerCam. In addition, we utilized photometric light curves from TESS, WASP, EulerCam, and TRAPPIST of multiple transits to fit for the planetary parameters and update the ephemeris. We spatially resolve the stellar surface of WASP-131 utilizing the Reloaded Rossiter McLaughlin technique to search for centre-to-limb convective variations, stellar differential rotation, and to determine the star–planet obliquity for the first time. We find WASP-131 is misaligned on a nearly retrograde orbit with a projected obliquity of $\lambda = 162.4\substack{+1.3 \\
-1.2}^{\circ }$ . In addition, we determined a stellar differential rotation shear of α = 0.61 ± 0.06 and disentangled the stellar inclination ($i_* = 40.9\substack{+13.3 \\
-8.5}^{\circ }$ ) from the projected rotational velocity, resulting in an equatorial velocity of $v_{\rm {eq}} = 7.7\substack{+1.5 \\
-1.3}$ km s−1. In turn, we determined the true 3D obliquity of $\psi = 123.7\substack{+12.8 \\
-8.0}^{\circ }$ , meaning the planet is on a perpendicular/polar orbit. Therefore, we explored possible mechanisms for the planetary system’s formation and evolution. Finally, we searched for centre-to-limb convective variations where there was a null detection, indicating that centre-to-limb convective variations are not prominent in this star or are hidden within red noise.
The chemical coupling of a protoplasmatic antigen from Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratubeculosis onto core-shell carboxylated particles was investigated with the aim of producing latex-protein ...complexes to be used in immunoagglutination assays capable of detecting bovine paratuberculosis disease. For this purpose, sensitizations were carried out using both colored and not colored carboxylated latexes as well as the protoplasmatic antigen at pH close to its isoelectric point to favor the antigenic protein to approach the particle surface. In all cases, higher fractions of proteins were chemically-bound to carboxyl groups on the surface of the particles. The assessment of the performance of the visual immunoagglutination assays consisted of evaluating 111 sera from healthy and infected bovines with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis. Complexes obtained from the colored latex allowed an acceptable visual discrimination between the studied positive and negative sera. Most of the positive samples showed strong to very strong agglutination and only a few samples reacted weakly, i.e. a sensitivity of 70%. The specificity of the assay, on the other hand, was 86%. Therefore, this rapid detection technique allows an easy and inexpensive identification of animals possibly infected with paratuberculosis “in situ” in the herds.

We report the discovery of two new transiting giant exoplanets NGTS-26 b and NGTS-27 b by the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). NGTS-26 b orbits around a G6-type main sequence star every 4.52 ...days. It has a mass of 0.29 -0.06 +0.07 M Jup and a radius of 1.33 -0.05 +0.06 R Jup making it a Saturn-mass planet with a highly inflated radius. NGTS-27 b orbits around a slightly evolved G3-type star every 3.37 days. It has a mass of 0.59 -0.07 +0.10 M Jup and a radius of 1.40±0.04 R Jup , making it a relatively standard hot Jupiter. The transits of these two planetary systems were re-observed and confirmed in photometry by the SAAO 1.0-m telescope, 1.2-m Euler Swiss telescope as well as the TESS spacecraft, and their masses were derived spectroscopically by the CORALIE, FEROS and HARPS spectrographs. Both giant exoplanets are highly irradiated by their host stars and present an anomalously inflated radius, especially NGTS-26 b which is one of the largest objects among peers of similar mass.
ABSTRACT
We report the discovery of NGTS-21b , a massive hot Jupiter orbiting a low-mass star as part of the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). The planet has a mass and radius of 2.36 ± 0.21 MJ ...and 1.33 ± 0.03 RJ, and an orbital period of 1.543 d. The host is a K3V (Teff = 4660 ± 41 K) metal-poor (Fe/H = −0.26 ± 0.07 dex) dwarf star with a mass and radius of 0.72 ± 0.04 M⊙ and 0.86 ± 0.04R⊙. Its age and rotation period of $10.02^{+3.29}_{-7.30}$ Gyr and 17.88 ± 0.08 d, respectively, are in accordance with the observed moderately low-stellar activity level. When comparing NGTS-21b with currently known transiting hot Jupiters with similar equilibrium temperatures, it is found to have one of the largest measured radii despite its large mass. Inflation-free planetary structure models suggest the planet’s atmosphere is inflated by $\sim \! 21{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$, while inflationary models predict a radius consistent with observations, thus pointing to stellar irradiation as the probable origin of NGTS-21b’s radius inflation. Additionally, NGTS-21b’s bulk density (1.25 ± 0.15 g cm–3) is also amongst the largest within the population of metal-poor giant hosts (Fe/H < 0.0), helping to reveal a falling upper boundary in metallicity–planet density parameter space that is in concordance with core accretion formation models. The discovery of rare planetary systems such as NGTS-21 greatly contributes towards better constraints being placed on the formation and evolution mechanisms of massive planets orbiting low-mass stars.
Mycobacterium avium sp. avium (MAA), M. avium sp. hominissuis (MAH), and M. avium sp. paratuberculosis (MAP) are the main members of the M. avium complex (MAC) causing diseases in several hosts. The ...aim of this study was to describe the genetic diversity of MAC isolated from different hosts. Twenty-six MAH and 61 MAP isolates were recovered from humans and cattle, respectively. GenoType CM® and IS1311-PCR were used to identify Mycobacterium species. The IS901-PCR was used to differentiate between MAH and MAA, while IS900-PCR was used to identify MAP. Genotyping was performed using a mycobacterial interspersed repetitive-unit-variable-number tandem-repeat (MIRU-VNTR) scheme (loci: 292, X3, 25, 47, 3, 7, 10, 32) and patterns (INMV) were assigned according to the MAC-INMV database (http://mac-inmv.tours.inra.fr/). Twenty-two (22/26, 84·6%) MAH isolates were genotyped and 16 were grouped into the following, INMV 92, INMV 121, INMV 97, INMV 103, INMV 50, and INMV 40. The loci X3 and 25 showed the largest diversity (D: 0·5844), and the global discriminatory index (Hunter and Gaston discriminatory index, HGDI) was 0·9300. MAP (100%) isolates were grouped into INMV 1, INMV 2, INMV 11, INMV 8, and INMV 5. The HGDI was 0·6984 and loci 292 and 7 had the largest D (0·6980 and 0·5050). MAH presented a higher D when compared with MAP. The MIRU-VNTR was a useful tool to describe the genetic diversity of both MAH and MAP as well as to identify six new MAH patterns that were conveniently reported to the MAC-INMV database. It was also demonstrated that, in the geographical region studied, human MAC cases were produced by MAH as there was no MAA found among the human clinical samples.
Abstract The induction of neurological signs by immunization of rabbits with gangliosides has been a controversial topic for many years. Recently, Yuki et al. N. Yuki, M. Yamada, M. Koga, M. Odaka, ...K. Susuki, Y. Tagawa, et al. Animal model of axonal Guillain–Barré syndrome induced by sensitization with GM1 ganglioside. Ann Neurol 2001;49:712–720. described an immunization protocol, including keyhole lympet hemocyanin in addition to ganglioside that induced a neurological disease resembling human Guillain–Barré syndrome. We employed this protocol in our laboratory and succeeded in reproducing the disease. Five different experiments were performed during a period of two years by different operators, using different batches of drugs, in a total of 26 rabbits. Despite minor variations in onset time and severity of the induced disease, the model proved to be reproducible. Both gangliosides and keyhole limpet hemocyanin are required for induction of disease.
