We present the root mean square (rms)-intensity diagram for black hole transients. Using observations taken with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, we study the relation between the rms amplitude of ...the variability and the net count rate during the 2002, 2004 and 2007 outbursts of the black hole X-ray binary GX 339−4. We find that the rms-flux relation previously observed during the hard state in X-ray binaries does not hold for the other states, when different relations apply. These relations can be used as a good tracer of the different accretion regimes. We identify the hard, soft and intermediate states in the rms-intensity diagram. Transitions between the different states are seen to produce marked changes in the rms-flux relation. We find that one single component is required to explain the ∼40 per cent variability observed at low count rates, whereas no or very low variability is associated to the accretion-disc thermal component.
We present a systematic study of the orbital inclination effects on black hole transients fast time-variability properties. We have considered all the black hole binaries that have been densely ...monitored by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite. We find that the amplitude of low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) depends on the orbital inclination. type-C QPOs are stronger for nearly edge-on systems (high inclination), while type-B QPOs are stronger when the accretion disc is closer to face-on (low inclination). Our results also suggest that the noise associated with type-C QPOs is consistent with being stronger for low-inclination sources, while the noise associated with type-B QPOs seems inclination independent. These results are consistent with a geometric origin of the type-C QPOs – for instance arising from relativistic precession of the inner flow within a truncated disc – while the noise would correspond to intrinsic brightness variability from mass accretion rate fluctuations in the accretion flow. The opposite behaviour of type-B QPOs – stronger in low-inclinations sources – supports the hypothesis that type-B QPOs are related to the jet, the power of which is the most obvious measurable parameter expected to be stronger in nearly face-on sources.
We analysed Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)/PCA and HEXTE data of the transient black hole binary GX 339-4, collected over a time-span of 8 years. We studied the properties and the behaviour of ...low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) as a function of the integrated broad-band variability and the spectral parameters during four outbursts (2002, 2004, 2007 and 2010). Most of the QPOs could be classified following the ABC classification which has been proposed before. Our results show that the ABC classification can be extended to include spectral dependencies and that the three QPO types have indeed intrinsically different properties. In terms of the relation between QPO frequency and power-law flux, types A and C QPOs may follow the same relation, whereas the type B QPOs trace out a very different relation. Type B QPO frequencies clearly correlate with the power-law flux and are connected to local increases of the count rate. The frequencies of all QPOs observed in the rising phase of the 2002, 2007 and 2010 outbursts correlate with the disc flux. Our results can be interpreted within the framework of the recently proposed QPO models involving Lense-Thirring precession. We suggest that types C and A QPOs might be connected and could be interpreted as being the result of the same phenomenon observed at different stages of the outburst evolution, while a different physical process produces type B QPOs.
We have systematically studied a large sample of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) monitored by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (50 sources; 10000+ observations). We find that the ...hysteresis patterns between Compton-dominated and thermal-dominated states, typically observed in black hole LMXBs, are also common in neutron star systems. These patterns, which also sample intermediate states, are found when looking at the evolution of both X-ray colour and fast variability of 10 systems accreting below ∼30 per cent of the Eddington luminosity (L
Edd). We show that hysteresis does not require large changes in luminosity and it is the natural form that state transitions take at these luminosities. At higher accretion rates, neutron stars do not show hysteresis, and they remain in a thermal-dominated, low-variability state, characterized by flaring behaviour and fast colour changes. Only at luminosities close to L
Edd, are high variability levels seen again, in correspondence to an increase in the fractional contribution of the Comptonization component. We compare this behaviour with that observed in LMXBs harbouring black holes, showing that the spectral, timing and multiwavelength properties of a given source can be determined by its location in the fast variability–luminosity diagram, which, therefore, provides a common framework for neutron star and black hole accretion states.
The black hole transient MAXI J1820+070 displayed optical P Cyg profiles and other wind-related emission line features during the hard state of its discovery outburst. We present near-infrared (NIR) ...spectroscopy covering the different accretion states of the system during this event. Our eight-epoch data set (VLT/X-shooter) reveals strong variability in the properties of the NIR emission lines. This includes absorption troughs and extended emission line wings with kinetic properties that are remarkably similar to those inferred from the wind signatures observed in optical emission lines, indicating that they most likely trace the same accretion disc wind. Unlike the optical features, these NIR signatures are not exclusive of the hard state, as they are also witnessed across the soft state with similar observational properties. This supports the presence of a relatively steady outflow during the entire outburst of the system, and it represents the first detection of an accretion disc wind in a black hole soft state at energies other than X-rays. We discuss the visibility of the wind as a function of the spectral band and the potential of NIR spectroscopy for wind studies, in particular during luminous accretion phases.
We present intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of the optical counterpart to the black hole X-ray transient MAXI J1820+070 (=ASASSN-18ey) obtained with the OSIRIS spectrograph on the 10.4 m Gran ...Telescopio Canarias. The observations were performed with the source close to the quiescent state and before the onset of renewed activity in 2019 August. We make use of these data and K-type dwarf templates taken with the same instrumental configuration to measure the projected rotational velocity of the donor star. We find vrot sin i = 84 5 km s−1 (1 ), which implies a donor to the black hole mass ratio for the case of a tidally locked and Roche-lobe filling donor star. The derived dynamical masses for the stellar components are and . The use of q, combined with estimates of the accretion disk size at the time of the optical spectroscopy, allows us to revise our previous orbital inclination constraints to 66° < i < 81°. These values lead to 95% confidence level limits on the masses of 5.73 < M1(M ) < 8.34 and 0.28 < M2(M ) < 0.77. Adopting instead the 63° 3° orientation angle of the radio jet as the binary inclination leads to and (1 ).
We present time-resolved 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias and 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope intermediate resolution spectroscopy of the X-ray transient MAXI J1820+070 (=ASASSN-18ey) obtained during ...its decline to the quiescent state. Cross-correlation of the 21 individual spectra against late-type templates reveals a sinusoidal velocity modulation with a period of 0.68549 0.00001 day and semi-amplitude of 417.7 3.9 km s−1. We derive a mass function f(M) = 5.18 0.15 M , dynamically confirming the black hole (BH) nature of the compact object. Our analysis of the stellar absorption features supports a K3-5 spectral classification for the donor star, which contributes 20% of the total flux at 5200-6800 . The photometric 0.703 0.003 day periodicity observed during outburst is 2.6% longer than the orbital period supporting the presence of a superhump modulation in the outburst light curves. In line with this interpretation, we constrain the binary mass ratio to be q 0.12. In addition, we observe a sharp increase in the H emission line equivalent width during inferior conjunction of the donor star that we interpret as a grazing eclipse of the accretion disk and allows us to constrain the binary inclination to i 69°. On the other hand, the absence of X-ray eclipses during outburst imply i 77°. These inclination limits, together with our dynamical solution, lead to a BH mass in the range 7-8 M . We also measure a systemic velocity γ = −21.6 2.3 km s−1, which, combined with the Gaia second data release proper motion and parallax, implies a large peculiar velocity ∼100 km s−1.
We present a systematic analysis of the fast time variability properties of the transient black hole binary GRO J1655−40, based on the complete set of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations. We ...demonstrate that the frequencies of the quasi-periodic oscillations and of the broad-band noise components and their variations match accurately the strong field general relativistic frequencies of particle motion in the close vicinity of the innermost stable circular orbit, as predicted by the relativistic precession model.We obtain high-precision measurements of the black hole mass M = (5.31 ± 0.07) M, consistent with the value from optical/NIR observations and spin (a = 0.290 ± 0.003), through the sole use of X-ray timing.
Aims. During the last ~50 years, the population of black hole candidates in X-ray binaries has increased considerably, with 59 Galactic objects being detected in transient low-mass X-ray binaries, as ...well as a few in persistent systems (including ~5 extragalactic binaries). Methods. We collect near-infrared, optical, and X-ray information spread over hundreds of references to study the population of black holes in X-ray transients as a whole. Results. We present the most updated catalogue of black hole transients. This contains X-ray, optical, and near-infrared observations, together with their astrometric and dynamical properties. The catalogue provides new and useful information in both statistical and observational parameters and provides a thorough and complete overview of the black hole population in the Milky Way. Analysing the distances and spatial distribution of the observed systems, we estimate a total population of ~1300 Galactic black hole transients. This means that we have only discovered less than ~5% of the total Galactic distribution.
