Metal contamination in a river has often been assessed based on total metal ion concentrations without relating them with the amount of suspended solids. This approach masks lot of important dynamics ...of metal ions in water. This is first time in India, a study has been undertaken to present how the level of metal ions in river water is influenced by suspended solids in response to spatial and seasonal conditions in Hugli estuary, India and to focus necessity of harmonizing science and policy. This study presented extent of metal pollution and distribution pattern over the stations, seasons, tides and depth. Major fraction of metal ions is associated with suspended sediments and discharges into the largest alluvial fan, Bengal fan, in the world. Enrichment factors indicated that major source of metal contamination is large influx of sediment due to strong natural activities and moderate anthropogenic activities over the years strong seasonal change, variable tidal energy level and irregular estuarine geometry play crucial role in maintaining metal concentrations in water column. Findings of this study would help to refine existing monitoring practice and to understand its importance in water quality management.
ABSTRACT
We present the first results from the Quasar Feedback Survey, a sample of 42 z < 0.2, O iii luminous AGNs ( LO III > 1042.1 ergs s−1) with moderate radio luminosities (i.e. L1.4GHz > ...1023.4 W Hz−1; median L1.4GHz = 5.9 × 1023 W Hz−1). Using high spatial resolution (∼0.3–1 arcsec), 1.5–6 GHz radio images from the Very Large Array, we find that 67 per cent of the sample have spatially extended radio features on ∼1–60 kpc scales. The radio sizes and morphologies suggest that these may be lower radio luminosity versions of compact, radio-loud AGNs. By combining the radio-to-infrared excess parameter, spectral index, radio morphology, and brightness temperature, we find radio emission in at least 57 per cent of the sample that is associated with AGN-related processes (e.g. jets, quasar-driven winds, or coronal emission). This is despite only 9.5–21 per cent being classified as radio-loud using traditional criteria. The origin of the radio emission in the remainder of the sample is unclear. We find that both the established anticorrelation between radio size and the width of the O iii line, and the known trend for the most O iii luminous AGNs to be associated with spatially extended radio emission, also hold for our sample of moderate radio luminosity quasars. These observations add to the growing evidence of a connection between the radio emission and ionized gas in quasar host galaxies. This work lays the foundation for deeper investigations into the drivers and impact of feedback in this unique sample.
ABSTRACT
We present results from a combined radio polarization and emission-line study of five type 2 quasars at z < 0.2 with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) B-array at 5 GHz and Hubble ...Space Telescope (HST) O iii observations. These five sources are known to exhibit close association between radio structures and ionized gas morphology and kinematics. Four sources (J0945+1737, J1000+1242, J1356+1026, and J1430+1339) show polarization in the current data. J1010+1413 is the unpolarized source in our sample. We detect $0.5{-}1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ fractional polarization in the radio cores and a high fractional polarization ($10{-}30{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) in the lobes of these sources. The morphological, spectral, and polarization properties suggest a jet origin for radio emission in J0945+1737, J1000+1242, J1010+1413, and J1430+1339 whereas the current data cannot fully discern the origin of radio emission (jet or wind) in J1356+1026. An anticorrelation between various polarized knots in the radio and O iii emission is observed in our sources, similar to that observed in some radio-loud AGN in the literature. This suggests that the radio emission is likely to be depolarized by the emission-line gas. By modelling the depolarization effects, we estimate the size of the emission-line gas clouds to be ∼(2.8 ± 1.7) × 10−5 parsec and the amount of thermal material mixed with the synchrotron plasma to be ∼(1.01 ± 0.08) × 106 M⊙ in the lobe of J0945+1737 (which exhibits the most prominent polarization signature in its lobe). The current work demonstrates that the interplay of jets/winds and emission-line gas is most likely responsible for the nature of radio outflows in radio-quiet AGN.
Energetic feedback by active galactic nuclei (AGNs) plays an important evolutionary role in the regulation of star formation on galactic scales. However, the effects of this feedback as a function of ...redshift and galaxy properties such as mass, environment, and cold gas content remain poorly understood. The broad frequency coverage (1 to 116 GHz), high sensitivity (up to ten times higher than the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array), and superb angular resolution (maximum baselines of at least a few hundred kilometers) of the proposed next-generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) are uniquely poised to revolutionize our understanding of AGNs and their role in galaxy evolution. Here, we provide an overview of the science related to AGN feedback that will be possible in the ngVLA era and present new continuum ngVLA imaging simulations of resolved radio jets spanning a wide range of intrinsic extents. We also consider key computational challenges and discuss exciting opportunities for multiwavelength synergy with other next-generation instruments, such as the Square Kilometer Array and the James Webb Space Telescope. The unique combination of high-resolution, large collecting area, and wide frequency range will enable significant advancements in our understanding of the effects of jet-driven feedback on sub-galactic scales, particularly for sources with extents of a few parsec to a few kiloparsec, such as young and/or lower-power radio AGNs, AGNs hosted by low-mass galaxies, radio jets that are interacting strongly with the interstellar medium of the host galaxy, and AGNs at high redshift.

) perpendicular to the radio jet compared to the ratios found in the galaxy disc. Our results and the comparison with simulations suggest that the radio jet is compressing and accelerating the molecular gas, and driving a lateral outflow that shows enhanced velocity dispersion and higher gas excitation. These results provide further evidence that the coupling between the jet and the ISM is relevant to AGN feedback even in the case of radio-quiet galaxies.

Abstract
We examine a scalar-tensor model of gravity that is globally scale-invariant. When adapted to a spatially flat Robertson-Walker metric, the equations of motion describe a dynamical system ...that flows from an unstable de Sitter space to a stable one. We show that during this transition inflation can occur. Moreover, at the final fixed point, a mass scale naturally emerges that can be identified with the Planck mass. We compute the inflationary spectral indices and the tensor perturbation and we compare them with observations. We also study the possibility that primordial magnetic fields are generated during inflation.
Objectives: Levonadifloxacin is a novel benzoquinolizine subclass of quinolone with broad-spectrum activities against problematic pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, ...quinolone-resistant S. aureus, vancomycin intermediate S. aureus, and vancomycin-resistant S. aureus. Levonadifloxacin and its oral prodrug, alalevonadifloxacin, have been recently approved in India for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, including concurrent bacteraemia and diabetic foot infections. The aim of the study is to assess the activity of levonadifloxacin against Gram-positive clinical isolates collected from various Indian hospitals using the disc-diffusion method. Materials and Methods: Nonduplicate isolates of S. aureus and other Gram-positive isolates collected from June 2019 to March 2020 were subjected to levonadifloxacin susceptibility testing (disk diffusion method) as per the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines (Year 2019). Levonadifloxacin 10 μg impregnated disks were used during the testing. Results: A total of 664 diverse Gram-positive clinical isolates collected from six different hospitals in India were analyzed. Majority (65.5%) of the isolates were S. aureus. All the S. aureus and other Gram-positive isolates were found to be susceptible to levonadifloxacin as per the prespecified interpretive criteria identified based on population pharmacokinetic model and Monte Carlo simulation enabled probability of pharmacodynamic target attainment analysis. Conclusions: The present study showed that levonadifloxacin was highly active against contemporary Gram-positive pathogens and furthermore demonstrated that levonadifloxacin susceptibilities can be reliably determined using the disc-diffusion method.

), 24 kpc wide, rapidly rotating ring, which is associated with the inner stellar disk. Broad (
FWHM
= 70−180 km s
−1
) emission lines with complex profiles associated with the radio source are seen over large regions in the ring, indicating gas velocities that are high enough to keep the otherwise marginally Toomre-stable gas from fragmenting into gravitationally bound, star-forming clouds. About 1−2% of the jet kinetic energy is required to power these motions. Resolved star-formation rate surface densities derived from Galaxy Evolution Explorer and Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer fall by factors of 30−70 short of expectations from the standard Kennicutt–Schmidt law of star-forming galaxies, and near gas-rich early-type galaxies with signatures of star formation that are lowered by jet feedback. We argue that radio Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) feedback is the only plausible mechanism to explain the low star-formation rates in this galaxy. Previous authors have already noted that the X-ray halo of J2345−0449 implies a baryon fraction that is close to the cosmic average, which is very high for a galaxy. We contrast this finding with other, equally massive, and equally baryon-rich spiral galaxies without prominent radio sources. Most of the baryons in these galaxies are in stars, not in the halos. We also discuss the implications of our results for our general understanding of AGN feedback in massive galaxies.
Summary Background No standard treatment exists for patients with platinum-refractory urothelial cancer. Taxanes and vinflunine are commonly used, but response is less than 20% with no survival ...benefit. In this phase 2 study, we assessed efficacy and tolerability of nanoparticle albumin-bound (nab) paclitaxel in platinum-refractory urothelial cancer. Methods We did an open-label, single-group, two-stage study at five centres in Canada. We enrolled patients aged at least 18 years with histologically confirmed, locally advanced, or metastatic measurable urothelial cancer, with documented progression on or within 12 months of treatment with one previous platinum-containing regimen. Patients received nab-paclitaxel at 260 mg/m2 intravenously every 3 weeks. Treatment continued until disease progression or occurrence of unacceptable toxic effects. The primary endpoint was objective tumour response, defined by a complete response (CR) or partial response (PR) according to Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors (version 1.0) criteria. Tumour response and safety were assessed in all patients who received at least one cycle of nab-paclitaxel. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov , number NCT00683059. Findings We enrolled 48 patients between Oct 16, 2008, and June 23, 2010. Patients received a median of six cycles (range one to 15). 47 patients were evaluable; one (2·1%) had a CR and 12 (25·5%) had PRs, resulting in an overall response of 27·7% (95% CI 17·3–44·4). The most frequently recorded adverse events of any grade were fatigue (38 of 48; 79%), pain (37 of 48; 77%), alopecia (34 of 48; 71%), and neuropathy (30 of 48; 77%). The most frequently recorded adverse events of grade 3 or higher were pain (11 of 48; 23%), fatigue (five of 48; 23%), hypertension (three of 48; 6%), neuropathy (three of 48, 6%), and joint stiffness or pain (two of 48; 4%). Interpretation Nab-paclitaxel was well tolerated in this population of patients with pretreated advanced urothelial cancer with an encouraging tumour response. These results warrant further study of nab-paclitaxel in second-line treatment of urothelial cancer. Funding Abraxis Bioscience, Celgene.
Over-exploitation of groundwater for agricultural practices is an increasing risk in India and has important implications for food security and livelihoods, particularly for rural households. An ...analysis of primary data collected from a few blocks in West Bengal, a state in India, reveals that there is limited adaptation to climate change despite awareness and a tendency to keep lowering the bore-well depth to access water. In this paper, we take stock of some of the key solutions to move the farmers towards adopting climate smart agriculture techniques, with a special focus on water resource management. We pay close attention to the debate on the emergence of water markets, and provide some fresh perspectives on the same. We also discuss the importance of ‘gender-smart’ approaches, extension services, ownership of local government and community participation in ensuring adaptation. Overall, this study provides a broad understanding of the issues at stake to make climate smart agriculture viable in India.
