Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a chronic, life-threatening disease with mental and physical components that include excessive weight loss, persistent food restriction, and altered body image. It is ...sometimes accompanied by hyperactivity, day-night reversal, and amenorrhea. No medications have been approved specific to the treatment of AN, partially due to its unclear etiopathogenesis. Because adiponectin is an appetite-regulating cytokine released by adipose tissue, we hypothesized that it could be useful as a specific biomarker that reflects the disease state of AN, so we developed a modified AN mouse model to test this hypothesis. Twenty-eight 3-week-old female C57BL/6J mice were randomly assigned to the following groups: 1) no intervention; 2) running wheel access; 3) food restriction (FR); and 4) activity-based anorexia (ABA) that included running wheel access plus FR. After a 10-day cage adaptation period, the mice of the FR and ABA groups were given 40% of their baseline food intake until 30% weight reduction (acute FR), then the body weight was maintained for 2.5 weeks (chronic FR). Running wheel activity and the incidence of the estrous cycle were assessed. Spontaneous food restriction and the plasma adiponectin level were evaluated at the end of the acute and chronic FR phases. An increase in running wheel activity was found in the light phase, and amenorrhea was found solely in the ABA group, which indicates that this is a good model of AN. This group showed a slight decrease in spontaneous food intake accompanied with an attenuated level of normally induced plasma adiponectin at the end of the chronic FR phase. These results indicate that the plasma adiponectin level may be a useful candidate biomarker for the status or stage of AN.
In the present study, we aimed to explore the effects of sleep restriction (SR) on self-reported golf putting skills. Eleven collegiate golfers participated in a self-reported, counterbalanced ...experimental study under two conditions: (a) a SR condition in which sleep on the night prior to putting was restricted to 4–5 hours, and (b) a habitual normal sleep (NS) condition on the night before the putting test. Following each sleep condition, participants engaged in ten consecutive putting tests at 7 am, 11 am, and 3 pm. Participants reported their subjective sleepiness before each time frame, and their chronotype, defined as their individual circadian preference, was scored based on a morningness–eveningness questionnaire (MEQ). Participants restricted sleep to an average period of 267.6 minutes/night (SD = 51.2) in the SR condition and 426.2 (SD =38.0) minutes/night in the NS condition. A two-way analysis of variance revealed a significant main effect of the sleep condition on the lateral displacement of putts from the target (lateral misalignment) (p = 0.002). In addition, there was a significant main effect of time on distance from the target (distance misalignment) (p = 0.017), indicating less accuracy of putting in the SR condition. In the SR condition, the MEQ score was positively correlated with distance misalignment at 3 pm (ρ = 0.650, p = 0.030), suggesting that morningness types are susceptible to the effects of SR on putting performance. Our findings suggest that golfers should obtain sufficient sleep to optimize putting performance.
Rapid and cost-effective economic loss estimation for buildings in non-life insurance is an important issue for insurance industries in order to provide immediate financial supports to residents ...affected by natural disasters. This study introduces an empirical approach for economic loss estimation of typhoon-induced building damage from post-disaster remote sensing (RS) images based on insurance records obtained in Osaka and Chiba, Japan affected by the 2018 Typhoon Jebi and the 2019 Typhoon Faxai, respectively. From the insurance records and the analysis of the RS images, we found that area-based loss rates (ALRs) defined as ratio of amount of loss to amount of insured values within a mesh were proportional to building damage ratios (BDRs) identified from number of damaged buildings in the RS images and existing building inventory data, whereas it was still challenging to accurately estimate loss rate for building-by-building even from very high-resolution images. A linear regression function was developed from the relationship between the ALRs and BDRs obtained in this study. We confirmed that the regression function provided a good approximation of the insured losses from the typhoon disasters. The result indicates that typhoon-induced insured losses can be rapidly estimated from the insurance inventory and the analysis of post-disaster RS images without field investigations.
The present study aimed to explore the influence of the chronotype on mental rotation performance in university students. Using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), 24 healthy volunteers ...were categorized as either early chronotype (ECT) or late chronotype (LCT). Participants completed a chronometric mental rotation task with three-dimensional stimuli at different times of day (8 AM and 8 PM). ECT participants showed a shorter reaction time in the morning trial than in the evening (p = 0.003), whereas LCT participants showed a shorter reaction time (p = 0.001) and increased accuracy (p = 0.031) in the evening compared to the morning session. Additionally, the MEQ score was positively correlated with the difference in reaction time between morning and evening trials (r = −0.589, p = 0.002). Two-way analysis of variance revealed an interaction between time and chronotype for the parameter reaction time in the evening trials (F(1, 22) = 28.27, p < 0.001). LCT participants showed higher speed and increased accuracy during their optimal time compared to ECT participants. This study explored diurnal alterations of visual-spatial abilities assessed as mental rotation performance, and the possible implications for certain life skills such as sports, car driving, and manual labor are discussed.
We performed a DNA microarray analysis of the renal medulla and cortex from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), stroke-prone SHRs (SHRSPs), and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats to identify pivotal ...molecules in the kidney associated with the onset of hypertension and found increased expression of acyl-CoA oxidase 2 (Acox2) mRNA. Real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed that Acox2 mRNA expression in the renal medulla and cortex of SHRs and SHRSPs was increased in comparison to WKY rats. These findings indicate that increased renal ACOX2 (an enzyme that induces the β-oxidation of fatty acids) is associated with the onset of hypertension. Immunostaining of ACOX2 in the distal tubules from SHRs was stronger than that in the distal tubules from WKY rats. Western blot analysis showed increased expression of ACOX2 protein in renal medulla from SHRs. Regarding the overexpression of ACOX2, plasma levels of phytanic acid in SHRs were significantly higher than those in WKY rats. There were no differences in other short-chain fatty acids. Plasma phytanic acid was affected by the gut microbiota through the conversion from phytol by yeast in the intestinal tract. We compared the gut microbiota profile in three strains of 5-week-old rats by the terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. The gut microbiota profile and ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroides differed between SHRs and WKY rats. These findings suggest that the increased expression of ACOX2 in the kidney along with increases in plasma phytanic acid and the altered gut microbiota may be involved in the oxidation in the kidney and the pathogenesis of hypertension.

Adsorption properties of 2-hydroxyphenol (catechol) on TiO2 particles has been studied at 298K. The adsorption proceeds from the aqueous solution with the Langmuir type behavior. ...Diffuse reflectance infrared spectra of the catechol-adsorbed TiO2 suggested that catechol is adsorbed on TiO2 solution via the chelation to the surface Ti ions. The adsorption induces a strong absorption in the whole visible region, of which intensity increases with an increase in the adsorption amount. Photoelectrochemical experiments and molecular orbital calculations indicate that the absorption stems from the charge-transfer (CT) transition from the HOMO of catechol to the conduction band of TiO2. Time courses for the adsorption of catechol on mesoporous TiO2 nanocrystalline film-coated glass was traced by measuring the change in the absorbance of the CT band, and analyzed on the basis of the Langmuir model. This study would present a new simple technique for sensing of important biomolecules bearing the catechol moiety.

Fourteen healthy participants were enrolled within the context of a randomized, single-blind, crossover study to evaluate the effects of a bean bag chair in comparison with those of a urethane chair manufactured to have a similar shape. Electroencephalogram, electromyogram, and heart rate variability were recorded and compared between wakefulness and napping.
Electroencephalogram analyses revealed no significant differences in sleep architecture or frequency components; however, a significant decrease was found in electromyogram recordings in the trapezius muscle, which represents the neck region (
= 0.019). Additionally, a significant main effect of bedding in the low-frequency/high-frequency ratio (

Patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer frequently experience fatigue, which can significantly lower their quality of life and interfere with treatment. However, the risk factors for the ...occurrence of chemotherapy-induced fatigue (CIF) are unclear. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of CIF in 415 patients newly treated with chemotherapy at Fukuoka University Hospital between December 2020 and July 2022, and analyzed the factors that influence the occurrence of fatigue. The observation period was defined as the two-week period starting from the day after the induction of chemotherapy, and we collected data retrospectively from medical records. Fatigue was assessed based on Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 5.0 by pharmacists who interviewed patients. The prevalence of fatigue was 56.4% (234/415). Nausea and vomiting, anorexia, hypoalbuminemia, and a high blood urea nitrogen/creatinine (BUN/Cr) ratio were extracted as risk factors for CIF. The prevalence of fatigue in 95 patients with nausea and vomiting was 83.2% (79/95), of whom 74.7% (59/79) had concomitant anorexia. Patients with nausea and vomiting had a high prevalence of both fatigue and anorexia, indicating that control for nausea and vomiting is crucial for the prevention of CIF. The serum albumin level reflects the nutritional status of patients approximately three weeks before chemotherapy, and BUN/Cr ≥20 indicates dehydration. Patients with a poor nutritional status or dehydration should be closely monitored for fatigue before and during treatment. These findings offer new prospects for healthcare providers to avoid or reduce CIF and improve patients’ quality of life by early control of CIF risk factors.
A low-carbohydrate, high-fat ketogenic diet (KD) induces hepatic ketogenesis and is believed to affect energy metabolism in mice. As hepatic Fgf21 expression was markedly induced in mice fed KD, we ...examined the effects of KD feeding on metabolism and the roles of Fgf21 in metabolism in mice fed KD using Fgf21 knockout mice.
We examined C57BL/6 mice fed KD for 6 or 14 days. Blood β-hydroxybutyrate levels were greatly increased at 6 days, indicating that hepatic ketogenesis was induced effectively by KD feeding for 6 days. KD feeding for 6 and 14 days impaired glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, although it did not affect body weight, blood NEFA, and triglyceride levels. Hepatic Fgf21 expression and blood Fgf21 levels were markedly increased in mice fed KD for 6 days. Blood β-hydroxybutyrate levels in the knockout mice fed KD for 6 days were comparable to those in wild-type mice fed KD, indicating that Fgf21 is not required for ketogenesis. However, the impaired glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity caused by KD feeding were improved in the knockout mice. Insulin-stimulated Akt phosphorylation was significantly decreased in the white adipose tissue in wild-type mice fed KD compared with those fed normal chow, but not in the muscle and liver. Its phosphorylation in the white adipose tissue was significantly increased in the knockout mice fed KD compared with wild-type mice fed KD. In contrast, hepatic gluconeogenic gene expression in Fgf21 knockout mice fed KD was comparable to those in the wild-type mice fed KD.
The present findings indicate that KD feeding impairs insulin sensitivity in mice due to insulin resistance in white adipose tissue. In addition, our findings indicate that Fgf21 induced to express by KD is a negative regulator of adipocyte insulin sensitivity in adaptation to a low-carbohydrate malnutritional state.

Chronic stress and glucocorticoid exposure are risk factors for depression. Oxytocin (OT) has been shown to have antistress and antidepressant‐like effects in male rodents. However, depression ...is twice as common in women than in men, and it remains unclear whether OT exerts antidepressant‐like effects in women with depression. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the therapeutic effect of chronic OT administration in a female mouse model of dexamethasone (DEX)‐induced depression.
Methods
Female C57BL/6J mice were administered saline (vehicle, s.c.), DEX (s.c.), or OT (i.p.) + DEX (s.c.) daily for 8 weeks, and then assessed for anxiety‐ and depression‐like behaviors. We also examined the hippocampal levels of phosphorylated cAMP response element‐binding protein (p‐CREB) and brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which are important mediators of the response to antidepressants.
Results
Simultaneous OT treatment blocked the adverse effects of DEX on emotional behaviors. Furthermore, it upregulated p‐CREB and BDNF in the hippocampus.
Conclusion
OT may exert antidepressant‐like effects by activating hippocampal CREB‐BDNF signaling in a female mouse model of depression.
