Abstract
At J-PARC MUSE, since the
µ
SR2017 conference and up to FY2022, there have been several new developments at the facility, including the completion of a new experimental area S2 at the ...surface muon beamline S-line and the first muon beam extraction to the H1 area in the H-line, mainly to carry out high-statistics fundamental physics experiments. Several new studies are also underway, such as applying negative muon non-destructive elemental analysis to the analysis of samples returned from the asteroid Ryugu in the D2 area of the D-line. This paper reports on the latest status of MUSE.
Objectives
To examine the relationship between fibroblast growth factor‐23 levels, chronic kidney disease severity and mineral metabolic disorders associated to chronic kidney disease in dogs.
...Materials and Methods
Fifteen control and 75 chronic kidney disease dogs were retrospectively included. Serum fibroblast growth factor‐23 concentration and other phosphate metabolite parameters were compared between controls and each International Renal Interest Society stage. Multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the predictors of fibroblast growth factor‐23.
Results
Serum fibroblast growth factor‐23 concentrations were significantly higher in dogs with IRIS stages 2, 3 and 4 chronic kidney disease than those in dogs in control group and with stage 1 and increased along with the severity of chronic kidney disease. Compared with control dogs, serum intact parathyroid hormone significantly increased from stage 2 and serum phosphorus concentrations increased in dogs with stage 4. In dogs with stage 2, fibroblast growth factor‐23 levels significantly increased in those with hyperphosphatemia compared with those with normophosphatemia. While eight of 26 (30.8%) dogs with stage 2 developed hyperparathyroidism (intact parathyroid hormone>8.5 ng/L), 19 (73.1%) dogs with stage 2 had elevated fibroblast growth factor‐23 levels above the reference range (>528 pg/mL). Log creatinine, log intact parathyroid hormone and log product of total calcium and phosphorus were independent predictors of log fibroblast growth factor‐23.
Clinical Significance
This preliminary study suggests that canine fibroblast growth factor‐23 might be involved in mineral metabolic disorders associated to chronic kidney disease in dogs, and this factor could be potentially used as an early marker for this condition.
Abstract
The Super-Omega beamline at J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility provides an intense pulsed slow positive muon beam. Combined with a muonium production target and laser ...light for muonium ionization, the pulsed ultra-slow muon facility has been developed. At the facility, a spectrometer for muon spin rotation measurements using ultra-slow muons is under commissioning. In this paper, we will report on the current status of the beam optics optimization of slow muon transport and ultra-slow muon extraction to improve the intensity and quality of the ultra-slow muon beam.
Background
Nivolumab improves overall survival (OS) in patients with platinum-refractory recurrent and metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (R/M HNSCC). In one study, however, ...Kaplan–Meier OS and progression-free survival (PFS) curves for the nivolumab and cytotoxic agent arms crossed at 3–6 months, suggesting that patients with initial resistance to immunotherapy might have better outcomes with cytotoxic treatment. Here, we explored the conditions and candidates which are predictive of nivolumab outcomes in R/M HNSCC.
Methods
We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 27 consecutive R/M HNSCC patients treated with nivolumab from 2014 to 2018. Tumor size was evaluated by RECIST ver.1.1. Tumor growth rate (Gr) was defined as 3
log(D
0
/D
pre
)/t
, where
D
0
and
D
pre
are the sum of the diameters of the target lesions (SumTLs) at baseline and pre-baseline, and
t
is time, with 1
t
defined as 4 weeks.
Results
Twenty-five patients were enrolled. Survival was significantly worse in patients with disease progression within 3 months. Outcomes appeared poorer in patients with higher pre-treatment Gr and bigger SumTLs at baseline. We therefore explored the association between prognosis, Gr and SumTLs. Recursive partitioning analysis showed that the characteristics of patients with disease progression after 3 months were Gr < 0.76 and SumTLs < 31.0 mm. Further, Gr < 0.76 and SumTLs < 31.0 mm was associated with significantly longer PFS (
p
= 0.01) and OS (
p
< 0.01).
Conclusions
These results suggest that Gr and SumTLs at baseline are significantly associated with OS and PFS in R/M HNSCC patients treated with nivolumab.
Abstract
At J-PARC MLF, MUSE provides the world-highest flux of pulsed muon beams. U-Line, one of the four beamlines in the facility, features an intense surface muon beam from Super-Omega and ...Ultra-slow muon generated by laser ionization of thermal muonium in vacuo. The Ultra-slow muon beam is characterized by variable energy from sub-keV to tens of keV and a time resolution of several tens of times better than that of ordinary pulsed beams. These features enable the study of interesting phenomena localized at surfaces and near interfaces and fast dynamics that cannot be observed with ordinary pulsed beams. Commissioning of the beamline and instruments is underway in preparation for the start of user programs. This paper presents an overview of the facility, its current status, and its prospects.
To correlate the ratio of the non-dependent to dependent aspects of the maximal pleural movement vector (MPMV
) and gravity-oriented collapse ratio (GCR
), and the mean lung field density (MLD) ...obtained using four-dimensional (4D) dynamic-ventilation computed tomography (DVCT) with airflow limitation parameters and the Brinkman index.
Forty-seven patients, including 22 patients with COPD, 13 non-COPD smokers, and 12 non-smokers, with no/slight pleural adhesion confirmed using a thoracoscope, underwent 4D-DVCT with 16 cm coverage. Coordinates for the lung field center, as well as ventral and dorsal pleural points, set on the central trans-axial levels in the median and para-median sagittal planes at end-inspiration, were automatically measured (13-17 frame images, 0.35 seconds/frame). MPMV
and GCR
were calculated based on MPMV and GCR values for all the included points and the lung field center. MLD was automatically measured in each of the time frames, and the maximal change ratio of MLD (MLD
) was calculated. These measured values were compared among COPD patients, non-COPD smokers, and non-smokers, and were correlated with the Brinkman index, FEV
/FVC, FEV
predicted, RV/TLC, and FEF
using Spearman's rank coefficients.
MPMV
was highest in non-smokers (0.819±0.464), followed by non-COPD smokers (0.405±0.131) and patients with COPD (-0.219±0.900). GCR
in non-smokers (1.003±1.384) was higher than that in patients with COPD (-0.164±1.199). MLD
in non-COPD smokers (0.105±0.028) was higher than that in patients with COPD (0.078±0.027). MPMV
showed positive correlations with FEV
predicted (
=0.397,
=0.006), FEV
/FVC (
=0.501,
<0.001), and FEF
(
=0.368,
=0.012). GCR
also demonstrated positive correlations with FEV
(
=0.397,
=0.006), FEV
/FVC (
=0.445,
=0.002), and FEF
(
=0.371,
=0.011). MPMV
showed a negative correlation with the Brinkman index (
=-0.398,
=0.006).
We demonstrated that reduced MPMV
and GCR
were associated with respiratory functional indices, in addition to a negative association of MPMV
with the Brinkman index, which should be recognized when assessing local pleural adhesion on DVCT, especially for ventral pleural aspects.
BL-6A at the Photon Factory is new small-angle X-ray scattering beamline. The light source makes use of a bending magnet, and the available wavelength, monochromatized by a Johann type crystal ...monochromator, is fixed to 1.5 Å. Various kinds of detectors for SAXS and WAXS experiments are installed in BL-6A, and a SAXS/WAXS simultaneous measurement system was also constructed. This beamline is maintained to measure various samples, such as protein solutions, fibers, liquid crystals as well as solid state materials.
