Malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are commonly used in Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) programmes to detect acute malaria infection. Programmes in regions with both Plasmodium falciparum and ...non-falciparum malaria (i.e. Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium vivax) use a three-band P. falciparum/Pan test such as the SD Bioline Malaria Ag P.f/Pan 05FK60 (Standard Diagnostics, Kyonggi, Republic of Korea), hereafter referred to as SD 05FK60, as used by the MSF-Holland clinics in Rakhine state, Myanmar. In spite of published reports of generally good test performance, medical and paramedical staff on the ground often doubt the diagnostic accuracy of these RDTs.
Parallel testing with malaria microscopy and RDT was conducted at two clinics in Rakhine state, Myanmar, for a period of 14 months as a programmatic response due to doubts and concerns of medical and paramedical staff into malaria RDTs.
A total of 2,585 blood samples from non-pregnant suspected malaria patients were examined by the SD 05FK60 RDT and microscopy at two clinics in Myanmar from October 2010 to December 2011. The reference standard microscopy diagnosed 531 P. falciparum and 587 P. vivax or P. malariae mono-infections. The overall sensitivity for P. falciparum detection by the SD 05FK60 was 90.2% (95% CI: 87.4-92.6) and for P. vivax/P. malariae 79.4% (95% CI: 75.9-82.6). The overall specificity for P. falciparum detection by the SD 05FK60 was 98.5% (95% CI: 97.7-99.1) and for P. vivax/P. malariae 98.7% (95% CI: 97.9-99.2). The sensitivity for P. falciparum was >91% for parasitaemia levels of >100-1,000 parasites/μl and increased for P. vivax/P. malariae with the parasitaemia level but was overall lower than for P. falciparum 25/408 and 13/420 cases, respectively, of P. falciparum and non-falciparum malaria were missed by the RDT.
In field conditions in Myanmar, the SD 05FK60 malaria RDT performed consistent with other reports. The test detected malaria caused by P. vivax/P. malariae to a lesser extent than P. falciparum infection. Sensitivity improved with increasing parasitaemia level, however even at higher levels some infections were missed. The SD 05FK60 is adequate for use in settings where high quality microscopy is not available.
The Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwaddy) and Salween (Thanlwin) globally rank among the largest rivers for supplying dissolved and particulate material to the ocean. Along with the Sittaung and Kaladan rivers ...they have societal importance to Myanmar in terms water sources and food production. Despite their importance for global biogeochemical cycles and the ~50 million people who live in their catchments, the chemistry of these rivers is poorly known. This study presents a comprehensive survey of dissolved (<0.22 μm) trace element concentrations (Sr, Fe, Al, Ba, Mn, V, Rb, Cu, Zn, As, Li, Ni, Mo, Cr, U, Pb, Sb, Co, Cs, Tl and Cd) at 38 locations within these river catchments, spanning a period of 2 years. The results highlight the global importance of the Irrawaddy and Salween rivers for trace element global biogeochemical cycles; contributing between 1 and 17 % of global dissolved riverine fluxes to the land-ocean interface for the studied elements. Area normalized dissolved fluxes in these catchments are ~2 to 10 times higher than global average values for most elements, consistent with high rates of chemical weathering. In general, anthropogenic activities have yet to significantly perturb dissolved trace element fluxes in these river systems. The presented dataset should therefore serve as a useful ‘natural’ baseline, against which future perturbations driven by climate change and/or the development of Myanmar's mining industry could be assessed. Exceptions to this include As in the Sittaung River and Sb, Zn, Pb and As in the Salween River, which may already be significantly impacted by anthropogenic inputs. The former represents a water quality issue of concern for public health, and so constraining the exact sources of As in the Sittaung River should be considered a priority for future research.

To investigate the bacterial content and risk factors associated with the hygienic quality of raw milk, a cross‐sectional study was conducted in four townships of Mandalay Region, Myanmar. From April ...to October 2017, bulk tank milk samples (n = 233) were collected from 233 dairy cattle farms located in Tada‐U, Pyin Oo Lwin, Meiktila, and Patheingyi Townships. From each farm, approximately 100 ml of bulk tank milk was collected and examined for bacterial content. Total bacterial count (TBC) and coliform count (CC) in milk samples were determined using milk agar and violet red bile agar. Of 233 milk samples, 68.2% (159/233) showed TBC higher than 1.0 × 105 cfu/ml, and 78.4% (183/233) showed CC higher than 100 cfu/ml. The mean value of TBC among 233 farms was 2.55 × 107 cfu/ml, ranging from 6.0 × 103 to 3.0 × 109 cfu/ml, whereas the mean value of CC was 1.59 × 105 cfu/ml, ranging from 10 to 8.4 × 106 cfu/ml. TBC tended to increase as CC increased in milk samples. The number of precautionary measures for milking operation, choice of cleaning materials, training experience of the farmers, cleanliness score of milking cows, and CMT scores of milk were significantly associated (p < 0.05) with TBC in bulk tank milk. Similarly, the number of precautionary measures for milking operation, choice of cleaning materials, training experience of the farmers, cleanliness scores of milking cows, CMT scores of milk samples, herd size, and type of milking practice showed significant association (p < 0.05) with CC in bulk tank milk. The effects of these potential risk factors should be minimized, farmers should be trained properly, and technical support should be provided, so that the quality of raw milk produced in Myanmar can be improved.
Bacterial content, and risk factors associated with increased total bacterial count (TBC) and coliform count (CC), in bulk tank milk was investigated over 7 months of duration in dairy cattle farms. The findings revealed that the increased TBC and CC in raw milk was significantly associated with poor farm management system and had negative impact on the quality of bulk tank milk.
Myanmar is an agricultural country and its economy is largely based upon crop productivity. The occurrence of extreme precipitation variability may lead to significantly reduce crop yields and ...extensive crop losses. Thus, rainfall prediction becomes an important issue in Myanmar. Regression has since long been a major data analytic tool in many scientific such as behavioral sciences, social sciences, biological sciences, medical sciences, psychometrics and econometrics for predicting. Multi variables polynomial regression (MPR) is one of the statistical regression method used to describe complex nonlinear input output relationships. In this paper, MPR is applied to implement the precipitation forecast model over Myanmar. Myanmar receives its annual rainfall during the summer monsoon season which starts in June and end in September. The model output result is station wide monthly and annual rainfall amount during summer monsoon season. The proposed model results are compared with the result produced by multiple linear regression model (MLR). From the experimental results, it is observed that using MPR method achieves closer agreement between actual and estimated rainfall than using MLR.
