The Agerolese cattle is a breed with ancient origins. It results from crosses of different breeds during last centuries. Historically (264 a. C.), the Picentini introduced, into Lactaria Montes, ...cattle of Podolian type which were then crossed with Bretonne, Brown Swiss, Jersey and Italian Friesian. The Agerolese is an endangered breed now (FAO, 1994), with 100 cows (Autochthon Cattle Bulletin Year 2002, AIA). A previous study on genetic characterization of this breed (Sartore et al., 2002), by using 16 microsatellites and 2 coding genes, showed that, in spite of its reduced numerical size, the Agerolese maintains a relatively high variability. Aim of this work is the extension of information about genetic characteristics of this endangered breed by karyological analysis for searching chromosome abnormalities, which could be the cause of reproductive problems. Sixty-five Agerolese cattle, all member of the births register, were karyiologically tested. All animals showed normal karyotype, with the exception of one calf, which was found heterozygous carrier of rob (1;29) and a heifer, co-twin with a male, which was found freemartin
Il bovino Agerolese è una razza dalle antiche origini, che deriva da incroci diversi negli ultimi secoli. Storicamente (264 a. (Autochton Cattle Bulletin, Year 2002, AIA).
Neonates who require a central venous catheter (CVC) for prolonged vascular access experience high rates of catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI).
A multicenter randomized clinical trial was ...undertaken to ascertain the efficacy of a novel chlorhexidine-impregnated dressing (Biopatch Antimicrobial Dressing) on the CVC sites of neonates for the prevention of catheter tip colonization, CRBSI, and bloodstream infection (BSI) without a source. Setting. Six level III neonatal intensive care units. Patients Studied. Neonates admitted to study units who would require a CVC for at least 48 hours.
Eligible infants were randomized before catheter placement to 1 of the 2 catheter site antisepsis regimens: 1) 10% povidone-iodine (PI) skin scrub, or 2) a 70% alcohol scrub followed by placement of a chlorhexidine-impregnated disk over the catheter insertion site. A transparent polyurethane dressing (Bioclusive Transparent Dressing) was used to cover the insertion site in both study groups. Primary study outcomes evaluated were catheter tip colonization, CRBSI, and BSI without an identified source.
Seven hundred five neonates were enrolled in the trial, 335 randomized to receive the chlorhexidine dressing and 370 to skin disinfection with PI (controls). Neonates randomized to the antimicrobial dressing group were less likely to have colonized CVC tips than control neonates (15.0% vs 24.0%, relative risk RR: 0.6 95% confidence interval CI: 0.5-0.9). Rates of CRBSI (3.8% vs 3.2%, RR: 1.2, CI: 0.5-2.7) and BSI without a source (15.2% vs 14.3%, RR: 1.1, CI: 0.8-1.5) did not differ between the 2 groups. Localized contact dermatitis from the antimicrobial dressing, requiring crossover into the PI treatment group, occurred in 15 (15.3%) of 98 exposed neonates weighing </=1000 g. No neonates in the PI group developed contact dermatitis.
The novel chlorhexidine-impregnated dressing, replaced weekly, was as effective as cutaneous disinfection with 10% PI and redressing the site every 3 to 7 days for preventing CRBSI and BSI without a source in critically ill neonates requiring prolonged central venous access. The risk of local contact dermatitis under the chlorhexidine dressing limits its use in low birth weight infants who require prolonged central access during the first 2 weeks of life.
We report the measurement of sin2thetaW in neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering from the NuTeV experiment. Using separate neutrino and anti-neutrino beams, NuTeV is able to determine sin2thetaW ...with low systematic errors by measuring the Paschos-Wolfenstein variable R-minus, a ratio of differences of neutrino and anti-neutrino neutral-current and charged-current cross-sections. NuTeV measures sin2thetaW(on-shell)= 0.2253+/-0.0019(stat)+/-0.0010(syst), which implies a W mass of 80.26+/-0.11 GeV.
Under recognition of primary hyperparathyroidism can lead to delays in diagnosis and surgical management. We aimed to establish a time course for primary hyperparathyroidism from initial ...hypercalcemia to surgery and evaluate the impact of guidelines for surgical referral on this time course.
A retrospective review was conducted on all patients undergoing parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism in 2013 at the Cleveland Clinic. Patients were stratified by adherence to 2008 indications for surgery guidelines, age, calcium values, osteoporosis, history of nephrolithiasis, 24-hour urinary calcium values, and estimated glomerular filtration rate.
219 patients with sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism underwent initial surgery. Twenty-three (10.5%) normocalcemic patients were excluded. Time course from initial hypercalcemia to surgery was 3.9 years for 137 (70%) patients who met objective guideline criteria versus 3.8 years for 59 (30%) patients who did not meet objective guideline criteria (P = .87). Stratification by age <50 years and calcium value >11.5 mg/dL revealed earlier times to surgery. However, osteoporosis, nephrolithiasis, 24-hour urinary calcium values, and estimated glomerular filtration rate had no impact.
There is a delayed time course for patients with sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism from initial hypercalcemia to surgery. Despite published objective criteria, one third of the patients who underwent surgery did not meet criteria, signifying the importance of clinician and patient decision making. Furthermore, patients with osteoporosis and nephrolithiasis who can significantly benefit from surgical cure have no apparent impact on the time to surgery. Overall, the objective guideline criteria have no effect in referral patterns suggesting a call for revision.
Analyses of structure functions (SFs) from neutrino and muon deep inelastic scattering data have shown discrepancies in F2 for x < 0.1. A new SF analysis of the CCFR collaboration data examining ...regions in x down to x=.0015 and 0.4 < Q^2 < 1.0 is presented. Comparison to corrected charged lepton scattering results for F2 from the NMC and E665 experiments are made. Differences between muon and neutrino scattering allow that the behavior of F2 from muon scattering could be different from F2 from neutrino scattering as Q^2 approaches zero. Comparisons between F2 muon and F2 neutrino are made in this limit.
Fifteen new potato clones were screened to pathotype Ro2 of the potato cyst nematode, Globodera rostochiensis. One cube dm clay pots were filled with soil infested with 17 eggs of the nematode/cube ...cm and six of them were planted with tubers of each clone and arranged in a glasshouse at 18-22 deg C. When thirty-five days old, all plants were uprooted and nematode infestation of the roots evaluated according to a visual score and by extracting all nematode developmental stages. All clones were invaded by a large number of nematode specimens. However, in seven potato clones (S90-1575-5, S90-157-19, S90-157-27, S90-157-28, S90-157-49, S90-164-1, S90-164-7) most of the nematodes (71.4-94.8%) remained at the second stage and none or only a few developed further to become third, fourth and adult female stages and cysts. These clones were considered resistant
Measurements of charged current neutrino and anti-neutrino nucleon interactions in the CCFR detector are used to extract the structure functions, F_2, xF_3(nu), xF_3(nubar) and R(longitudinal) in the ...kinematic region 0.01<x<0.6 and 1<Q^2<300 GeV^2. The new measurements of R in the x<0.1 region provide a constraint on the level of the gluon distribution. The x and Q^2 dependence of R is compared with a QCD based fit to previous data. The CKM matrix element |V_cs| is extracted from a combined analysis of xF_3 and dimuon data.
