Nitrogen-bearing complex organic molecules have been commonly detected in the gas phase but not yet in interstellar ices. This has led to the long-standing question of whether these molecules form in ...the gas phase or in ices. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) offers the sensitivity, spectral resolution, and wavelength coverage needed to detect them in ices and investigate whether their abundance ratios are similar in gas and ice. We report the first tentative detection of CH3CN, C2H5CN and the simple molecule, N2O, based on the CN-stretch band in interstellar ices toward three (HOPS 153, HOPS 370, and IRAS 20126+4104) out of the five protostellar systems observed as part of the Investigating Protostellar Accretion (IPA) GO program with JWST-NIRSpec. We also provide upper limits for the two other sources with smaller luminosities in the sample. We detect OCN− in the ices of all sources with typical CH3CN/OCN− ratios of around 1. Ice and gas column density ratios of the nitrogen-bearing species with respect to each other are better matched than those with respect to methanol, which are a factor of ~5 larger in the ices than the gas. We attribute the elevated ice column densities with respect to methanol to the difference in snowline locations of nitrogen-bearing molecules and of methanol, biasing the gas-phase observations toward fewer nitrogen-bearing molecules. Moreover, we find tentative evidence of the enhancement of OCN−, CH3CN, and C2H5CN in warmer ices; although, the formation of these molecules likely starts along with methanol in the cold prestellar phase. Future surveys combining NIRSpec and MIRI, and additional laboratory spectroscopic measurements of C2H5CN ice, are necessary for robust detection and conclusions on the formation history of complex cyanides.
Abstract Chikungunya fever is a major public health issue in India affecting billions. After 2010, the infection was in a decline until in 2016, when a massive outbreak affected the country. In this ...report, we present serologic and molecular investigations of 600 patient samples for chikungunya and dengue viruses along with clinical and comorbidity features. We recruited 600 patients during this outbreak and evaluated them for chikungunya and dengue virus antibodies and virus RNA through IgM, NS1 antigen and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). We further evaluated Zika virus RNA by qPCR. Additionally, we documented all clinical and comorbid features that were observed during the outbreak in the hospital. We report a total incidence rate of 58% of chikungunya during the outbreak in our hospital. Within the recruited patients, 70% of the patients were positive for chikungunya virus IgM whereas 24.17% were positive by qPCR. None of the samples was positive for Zika virus RNA. Additionally, coinfection of dengue and chikungunya was seen in 25.33% of patients. Analysis of clinical features revealed that 97% of patients had restricted movements of the joints with other features like swelling, itching and rashes of varying severity observed. Twelve patients presented with comorbid conditions, and two fatalities occurred among these comorbid patients. The high incidence of coinfection in the current outbreak warrants implementation of routine testing of both chikungunya and dengue virus in suspected patients for better patient management. The post–acute phase complications reported in the hospitals require in-depth studies to understand the actual impact of the current outbreak.

A novel system has been developed to detect simultaneous double-alpha emission from purified and weightless sources. The system includes the collection of 224Ra low-energy recoils in purified helium ...buffer gas from the decay of 228Th. The recoil products are thermalized and collected in a cryogenic buffer gas cell and extracted into an RF-ion guide for mass selection. The mass-separated ions are implanted at low kinetic energy into a thin carbon foil placed between two large-area double-sided silicon strip detectors to observe correlated alpha-particle emission. The apparatus is described in detail, including insights into its experimental performance.
The Medline database was searched using key words: ‘rotator cuff’, ‘tear’, and ‘treatment’. 12 studies that involved (1) surgical treatment for rotator cuff tear, (2) measurement of pre- and ...post-operative pain score, functional score, and/or patient satisfaction, (3) patients that failed to improve functionally or had poor satisfaction, (4) preoperative examination of risk factors that could lead to poor outcome, and (5) a minimum follow-up of 6 months were reviewed to identify risk factors associated with poor outcome following surgical treatment for rotator cuff tear. The most common risk factor was tear size, followed by open compensation claim, age, and time from injury to surgery.
The attachment of biotin to apocarboxylases is catalyzed by holocarboxylase synthetase (HCS). An inherited deficiency of HCS results in the disorder ‘multiple carboxylase deficiency’, which is ...characterized by reduced activity of all biotin-dependent carboxylases. Here we show that the majority of HCS localizes to the nucleus rather than the cytoplasm based on immunofluorescence studies with antibodies to peptides and full length HCS and on the expression of recombinant HCS. Subnuclear fractionations indicate that HCS is associated with chromatin and the nuclear lamina, the latter in a discontinuous distribution in high salt-extracted nuclear membranes. During mitosis, HCS resolves into ring-like particles which co-localize with lamin B. Nuclear HCS retains its biotinylating activity and was shown to biotinylate purified histones in vitro. Significantly, fibroblasts from patients with HCS deficiency are severely deficient in histone biotinylation in addition to the deficiency of carboxylase activities. We propose that the role of HCS in histone modification may be linked to the participation of biotin in the regulation of gene expression or cell division and that affected patients may have additional disease beyond that due to the effect on carboxylases.

It has an expanded broad-spectrum antibacterial activity including
multi-drug resistant pathogens, like methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus , vancomycin-resistant enterococci , multi-drug
resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae , extended-spectrum
β-lactamase-producing gram-negative bacteria and Acinetobacter
baumannii . Tigecycline however is not active against Proteus,
Providencia and Pseudomonas species. Its currently approved
indications include complicated skin and skin structure infections and
complicated intra-abdominal infections. It has also been found to be
effective for the treatment of community- as well as hospital-acquired
and ventilator-associated pneumonia and bacteremia, sepsis with shock
and urinary tract infections. Tigecycline appears to be a valuable
treatment option for the management of superbugs, especially where
conventional therapy has failed.
Retinal ischemia results in the loss of vision in a number of ocular diseases including acute glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy and retinal vascular occlusion. Recent studies ...have shown that most of the neuronal death that leads to loss of vision results from apoptosis. XIAP-mediated gene therapy has been shown to protect a number of neuronal types from apoptosis but has never been assessed in retinal neurons following ischemic-induced cell death. We injected an adeno-associated viral vector expressing XIAP or GFP into rat eyes and 6 weeks later, rendered them ischemic by raising intraocular pressure. Functional analysis revealed that XIAP-treated eyes retained larger b-wave amplitudes than GFP-treated eyes up to 4 weeks post-ischemia. The number of cells in the inner nuclear layer (INL) and the thickness of the inner retina were significantly preserved in XIAP-treated eyes compared to GFP-treated eyes. Similarly, there was no significant reduction in optic nerve axon numbers in XIAP-treated eyes. There were also significantly fewer TUNEL (TdT-dUTP terminal nick end labeling) positive cells in the INL of XIAP-treated retinas at 24 h post-ischemia. Thus, XIAP-mediated gene therapy imparts both functional and structural protection to the retina after a transient ischemic episode.
Background
This systematic review is an attempt to provide an evidence-based analysis of literature on management of severely displaced radial neck fractures (with > 60° displacement) in children.
...Material and Methods
A systematic literature search was conducted to identify all original articles published between 01/01/1999 and 20/01/17 on surgical treatment of radial neck fractures in children in the following databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL PLUS. Studies reporting pre-operative fracture displacement and post-operative outcomes according to standard outcome measures were included.
Results
Out of 887 studies identified on initial search, 48 were eligible for full-text review and 14 studies with a total of 173 patients were included in the final review. The overall success rate after severely displaced radial neck fractures in skeletally immature patients was 87% (95% CI, 82%, 92%). Closed reduction methods reported higher success rate of 90% (95% CI, 85%, 95%) compared to open reduction methods 77% (95% CI, 63%, 89%).
Conclusion
The average rate of patients achieving excellent/good outcomes following surgical management after severely displaced radial neck fractures in this review is better than reports from previous reviews. Considering the limitations in current evidence base including lack of direct comparison of techniques and small study samples, large comparative studies controlling for possible confounders are merited.
