ABSTRACT
Young associations in star-forming regions are stellar systems that allow us to understand the mechanisms that characterize the stars in their early life and what happens around them. In ...particular, the analysis of the discs and of the exoplanets around young stars allows us to know the key processes that prevail in their evolution and understand the properties of the exoplanets orbiting older stars. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite mission is giving us the opportunity to extract and analyse the light curves of association members with high accuracy, but the crowding that affects these regions makes difficult the light curve extraction. In the PATHOS project, cutting-edge tools are used to extract high-precision light curves and identify variable stars and transiting exoplanets in open clusters and associations. In this work, I analysed the light curves of stars in five young (≲10 Myr) associations, searching for variables and candidate exoplanets. Using the rotational periods of the association members, I constrained the ages of the five stellar systems (∼2–10 Myr). I searched for dippers, and I investigated the properties of the dust that forms the circumstellar discs. Finally, I searched for transiting signals, finding six strong candidate exoplanets. No candidates with radius RP ≲ 0.9 RJ have been detected, in agreement with the expectations. The frequency of giant planets resulted to be ∼2–3 per cent, higher than that expected for field stars (≲ 1 per cent); the low statistic makes this conclusion not strong, and new investigations on young objects are mandatory to confirm this result.

The TESS mission will survey ∼85 per cent of the sky, giving us the opportunity of extracting high-precision light curves of millions of stars, including stellar cluster members. In this ...work, we present our project ‘A PSF-based Approach to TESS High quality data Of Stellar clusters’ (PATHOS), aimed at searching and characterize candidate exoplanets and variable stars in stellar clusters using our innovative method for the extraction of high-precision light curves of stars located in crowded environments. Our technique of light-curve extraction involves the use of empirical point spread functions (PSFs), an input catalogue and neighbour-subtraction. The PSF-based approach allows us to minimize the dilution effects in crowded environments and to extract high-precision photometry for stars in the faint regime (G > 13). For this pilot project, we extracted, corrected, and analysed the light curves of 16 641 stars located in a dense region centred on the globular cluster 47 Tuc. We were able to reach the TESS magnitude T ∼ 16.5 with a photometric precision of ${\sim} 1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ on the 6.5-h time-scale; in the bright regime we were able to detect transits with depth of ∼34 parts per million. We searched for variables and candidate transiting exoplanets. Our pipeline detected one planetary candidate orbiting a main-sequence star in the Galactic field. We analysed the period–luminosity distribution for red-giant stars of 47 Tuc and the eclipsing binaries in the field. Light curves are uploaded on the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes under the project PATHOS.
Context. The origin of the observed diversity of planetary system architectures is one of the main topics of exoplanetary research. The detection of a statistically significant sample of planets ...around young stars allows us to study the early stages of planet formation and evolution, but only a handful are known so far. In this regard a considerable contribution is expected from the NASA TESS satellite, which is now performing a survey of ~85% of the sky to search for short-period transiting planets. Aims. In its first month of operation TESS found a planet candidate with an orbital period of 8.14 days around a member of the Tuc-Hor young association (~40 Myr), the G6V main component of the binary system DS Tuc. If confirmed, it would be the first transiting planet around a young star suitable for radial velocity and/or atmospheric characterisation. Our aim is to validate the planetary nature of this companion and to measure its orbital and physical parameters. Methods. We obtained accurate planet parameters by coupling an independent reprocessing of the TESS light curve with improved stellar parameters and the dilution caused by the binary companion; we analysed high-precision archival radial velocities to impose an upper limit of about 0.1 MJup on the planet mass; we finally ruled out the presence of external companions beyond 40 au with adaptive optics images. Results. We confirm the presence of a young giant (R = 0.50 RJup) planet having a non-negligible possibility to be inflated (theoretical mass ≲ 20 M⊕) around DS Tuc A. We discuss the feasibility of mass determination, Rossiter-McLaughlin analysis, and atmosphere characterisation allowed by the brightness of the star.

In this work, we present the analysis of 976 814 FGKM dwarf and subgiant stars in the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Telescope (TESS) full frame images (FFIs) of the Southern ecliptic ...hemisphere. We present a new pipeline, DIAmante, developed to extract optimized, multisector photometry from TESS FFIs and a classifier, based on the Random Forest technique, trained to discriminate plausible transiting planetary candidates from common false positives. A new statistical model was developed to provide the probability of correct identification of the source of variability. We restricted the planet search to the stars located in the least crowded regions of the sky and identified 396 transiting planetary candidates among which 252 are new detections. The candidates’ radius distribution ranges between 1 R⊕ and 2.6 RJ with median value of 1 RJ and the period distribution ranges between 0.25 and 105 d with median value of 3.8 d. The sample contains four long period candidates (P > 50 d), one of which is new, and 64 candidates with periods between 10 and 50 d (42 new ones). In the small planet radius domain (4R < R⊕), we found 39 candidates among which 15 are new detections. Additionally, we present 15 single transit events (14 new ones), a new candidate multiplanetary system, and a novel candidate around a known TOI. By using Gaia dynamical constraints, we found that 70 objects show evidence of binarity. We release a catalogue of the objects we analysed and the corresponding light curves and diagnostic figures through the MAST and ExoFOP portals.

The knowledge of the ages of stars hosting exoplanets allows us to obtain an overview on the evolution of exoplanets and understand the mechanisms affecting their life. The measurement of ...the ages of stars in the Galaxy is usually affected by large uncertainties. An exception are the stellar clusters: For their coeval members, born from the same molecular cloud, ages can be measured with extreme accuracy. In this context, the project PATHOS is providing candidate exoplanets orbiting members of stellar clusters and associations through the analysis of high-precision light curves obtained with cutting-edge tools. In this work, we exploited the data collected during the second year of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite mission. We extracted, analysed, and modelled the light curves of $\sim 90\, 000$ stars in open clusters located in the Northern ecliptic hemisphere in order to find candidate exoplanets. We measured the frequencies of candidate exoplanets in open clusters for different orbital periods and planetary radii, taking into account the detection efficiency of our pipeline and the false positive probabilities of our candidates. We analysed the age–RP distribution of candidate and confirmed exoplanets with periods <100 d and well constrained ages. While no peculiar trends are observed for Jupiter-size and (super-)Earth-size planets, we found that objects with $4 \lesssim R_{\rm P} \lesssim 13R_{\rm Earth}$ are concentrated at ages ≲200 Myr; different scenarios (atmospheric losses, migration, etc.) are considered to explain the observed age–RP distribution.
We use high-precision photometry of red-giant-branch (RGB) stars in 57 Galactic globular clusters (GCs), mostly from the 'Hubble Space Telescope (HST) UV Legacy Survey of Galactic GCs', to identify ...and characterize their multiple stellar populations. For each cluster the pseudo-two-colour diagram (or 'chromosome map') is presented, built with a suitable combination of stellar magnitudes in the F275W, F336W, F438W, and F814W filters that maximizes the separation between multiple populations. In the chromosome map of most GCs (type-I clusters), stars separate in two distinct groups that we identify with the first (1G) and the second generation (2G). This identification is further supported by noticing that 1G stars have primordial (oxygen-rich, sodium-poor) chemical composition, whereas 2G stars are enhanced in sodium and depleted in oxygen. This 1G-2G separation is not possible for a few GCs where the two sequences have apparently merged into an extended, continuous sequence. In some GCs (type-II clusters) the 1G and/or the 2G sequences appear to be split, hence displaying more complex chromosome maps. These clusters exhibit multiple subgiant branches (SGBs) also in purely optical colour-magnitude diagrams, with the fainter SGB joining into a red RGB which is populated by stars with enhanced heavy-element abundance. We measure the RGB width by using appropriate colours and pseudo-colours. When the metallicity dependence is removed, the RGB width correlates with the cluster mass. The fraction of 1G stars ranges from ~8 per cent to ~67 per cent and anticorrelates with the cluster mass, indicating that incidence and complexity of the multiple population phenomenon both increase with cluster mass.
We present high-precision multiband photometry for the globular cluster (GC) M2. We combine the analysis of the photometric data obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope UV Legacy Survey of Galactic ...GCs GO-13297, with chemical abundances by Yong et al., and compare the photometry with models in order to analyse the multiple stellar sequences we identified in the colour–magnitude diagram. We find three main stellar components, composed of metal-poor, metal-intermediate, and metal-rich stars (hereafter referred to as population A, B, and C, respectively). The components A and B include stars with different s-process element abundances. They host six sub-populations with different light-element abundances, and exhibit an internal variation in helium up to ΔY ∼ 0.07 dex. In contrast with M22, another cluster characterized by the presence of populations with different metallicities, M2 contains a third stellar component, C, which shows neither evidence for sub-populations nor an internal spread in light-elements. Population C does not exhibit the typical photometric signatures that are associated with abundance variations of light elements produced by hydrogen burning at hot temperatures. We compare M2 with other GCs with intrinsic heavy-element variations and conclude that M2 resembles M22, but it includes an additional stellar component that makes it more similar to the central region of the Sagittarius galaxy, which hosts a GC (M54) and the nucleus of the Sagittarius galaxy itself.

We present an analysis of three southern open star clusters NGC 6067, NGC 2506, and IC 4651 using wide-field photometric and Gaia DR2 astrometric data. They are poorly studied clusters. We ...took advantage of the synergy between Gaia DR2 high precision astrometric measurements and ground-based wide-field photometry to isolate cluster members and further study these clusters. We identify the cluster members using proper motions, parallax and colour–magnitude diagrams. Mean proper motion of the clusters in μαcosδ and μδ is estimated as −1.90 ± 0.01 and −2.57 ± 0.01 mas yr−1 for NGC 6067, −2.57 ± 0.01, and 3.92 ± 0.01 mas yr−1 for NGC 2506 and −2.41 ± 0.01 and −5.05 ± 0.02 mas yr−1 for IC 4651. Distances are estimated as 3.01 ± 0.87, 3.88 ± 0.42, and 1.00 ± 0.08 kpc for the clusters NGC 6067, NGC 2506, and IC 4651, respectively, using parallaxes taken from Gaia DR2 catalogue. Galactic orbits are determined for these clusters using Galactic potential models. We find that these clusters have circular orbits. Cluster radii are determined as 10 arcmin for NGC 6067, 12 arcmin for NGC 2506, and 11 arcmin for IC 4651. Ages of the clusters estimated by isochrones fitting are 66 ± 8 Myr, 2.09 ± 0.14 Gyr, and 1.59 ± 0.14 Gyr for NGC 6067, NGC 2506, and IC 4651, respectively. Mass function slope for the entire region of cluster NGC 2506 is found to be comparable with the Salpeter value in the mass range of 0.77–1.54 M⊙. The mass function analysis shows that the slope becomes flat when one goes from halo to core region in all the three clusters. A comparison of dynamical age with cluster’s age indicates that NGC 2506 and IC 4651 are dynamically relaxed clusters.
