This volume in honour of Jan N. Bremmer consists of a variety of contributions offering a broad spectrum of original ideas and innovative approaches in the history of religions both past and present, ...thus reflecting the nature of the scholarship of Bremmer himself.
Calcium antagonist drugs were proposed for use in patients with recent aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) because of their ability to block the effects of a wide variety of vasoconstrictor ...substances on cerebral arteries in vitro. It was suggested that these agents might, therefore, be useful in ameliorating cerebral vasospasm and its ischemic consequences which frequently complicate SAH. This hypothesis was tested in an arm of a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of high-dose intravenous nicardipine in patients with recently ruptured aneurysms. Participating investigators were required to send selected copies of all admission and follow-up angiograms obtained between Days 7 and 11 following hemorrhage (the peak period of risk for vasospasm) to the Central Registry of the Cooperative Aneurysm Study for blinded interpretation and review for the presence and severity of angiographic vasospasm. In centers with transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) capabilities, middle cerebral artery (MCA) mean flow velocities were measured and recorded. Angiograms obtained between Days 7 and 11 were available for 103 (23%) of 449 patients receiving nicardipine and 121 (26%) of 457 receiving placebo. There was a balance of prognostic factors for vasospasm between the groups. Fifty-one percent of placebo-treated patients had moderate or severe vasospasm on "Day 7-11 angiograms" compared to 33% of nicardipine-treated patients. This difference is statistically significant (p < 0.01). Sixty-seven (49%) of 137 placebo-treated patients examined with TCD between Days 7 and 11 had mean MCA flow velocities exceeding 120 cm/sec compared to 26 (23%) of 112 nicardipine-treated patients (significant difference, p < 0.001). These data suggest that high-dose intravenous nicardipine reduces the incidence and severity of delayed cerebral arterial narrowing in patients following aneurysmal SAH.
The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of verapamil (20 microM) and hyperthermia (42 degrees C) as modifiers of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) used at different concentrations, in inhibiting the ...growth of human pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells. Combined verapamil and hyperthermia treatment significantly decreased cell count by 63.8% when compared to the control. Verapamil drastically enhanced the growth inhibitory effect of 5-FU at all concentrations. At high-concentration 5-FU (50 micrograms/ml), verapamil and hyperthermia had a synergistic growth-inhibitory effect and caused a significant decrease in cell count by 81.4% in comparison to the control. The modalities analyzed in this study require further investigation and have potential for clinical applicability to pancreatic cancer therapy in the future.
KM3NeT/ORCA is a next-generation neutrino telescope optimised for atmospheric neutrino oscillations studies. In this paper, the sensitivity of ORCA to the presence of a light sterile neutrino in a ...3+1 model is presented. After three years of data taking, ORCA will be able to probe the active-sterile mixing angles \(\theta_{14}\), \(\theta_{24}\), \(\theta_{34}\) and the effective angle \(\theta_{\mu e}\), over a broad range of mass squared difference \(\Delta m^2_{41} \sim 10^{-5}, 10\) \(\rm{eV}^2\), allowing to test the eV-mass sterile neutrino hypothesis as the origin of short baseline anomalies, as well as probing the hypothesis of a very light sterile neutrino, not yet constrained by cosmology. ORCA will be able to explore a relevant fraction of the parameter space not yet reached by present measurements.
We develop a novel technique to exploit the extensive data sets provided by underwater neutrino telescopes to gain information on bioluminescence in the deep sea. The passive nature of the telescopes ...gives us the unique opportunity to infer information on bioluminescent organisms without actively interfering with them. We propose a statistical method that allows us to reconstruct the light emission of individual organisms, as well as their location and movement. A mathematical model is built to describe the measurement process of underwater neutrino telescopes and the signal generation of the biological organisms. The Metric Gaussian Variational Inference algorithm is used to reconstruct the model parameters using photon counts recorded by the neutrino detectors. We apply this method to synthetic data sets and data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope. The telescope is located 40 km off the French coast and fixed to the sea floor at a depth of 2475 m. The runs with synthetic data reveal that we can reliably model the emitted bioluminescent flashes of the organisms. Furthermore, we find that the spatial resolution of the localization of light sources highly depends on the configuration of the telescope. Precise measurements of the efficiencies of the detectors and the attenuation length of the water are crucial to reconstruct the light emission. Finally, the application to ANTARES data reveals the first precise localizations of bioluminescent organisms using neutrino telescope data.
Tumor biopsies from 100 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC) were xenografted to athymic nude mice. To ascertain whether xenograft take might be a factor of clinical ...significance, it was compared with patient survival, the patients being divided into two groups (take and non-take) according to the results of transplantation. The tumor take rate was 29%. Median survival time with respect to cancer death was 18 months in the take group, as compared with over 74 months in the non-take group (p = 0.06). No significant differences were observed between the two groups with respect to age, tumor size, nodal status, clinical stage or histological differentiation. The findings suggest that take of HNSCC xenografts in nude mice may reflect the malignant potential of the original tumor. Moreover, the possibility cannot be excluded of a selection bias favoring the use of such malignant xenografts in therapeutic studies in nude mice.
This article presents the potential of a combined analysis of the JUNO and KM3NeT/ORCA experiments to determine the neutrino mass ordering. This combination is particularly interesting as it ...significantly boosts the potential of either detector, beyond simply adding their neutrino mass ordering sensitivities, by removing a degeneracy in the determination of \(\Delta m_{31}^2\) between the two experiments when assuming the wrong ordering. The study is based on the latest projected performances for JUNO, and on simulation tools using a full Monte Carlo approach to the KM3NeT/ORCA response with a careful assessment of its energy systematics. From this analysis, a \(5\sigma\) determination of the neutrino mass ordering is expected after 6 years of joint data taking for any value of the oscillation parameters. This sensitivity would be achieved after only 2 years of joint data taking assuming the current global best-fit values for those parameters for normal ordering.
On October 1, 2019, the IceCube Collaboration detected a muon track neutrino with high probability of being of astrophysical origin, IC191001A. After a few hours, the tidal disruption event (TDE) ...AT2019dsg, observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), was indicated as the most likely counterpart of the IceCube track. More recently, the follow-up campaign of the IceCube alerts by ZTF suggested a second TDE, AT2019fdr, as a promising counterpart of another IceCube muon track candidate, IC200530A, detected on May 30, 2020. These are the second and third associations between astrophysical sources and high-energy neutrinos after the compelling identification of the blazar TXS 0506+056. Here, the search for ANTARES neutrinos from the directions of AT2019dsg and AT2019fdr using a time-integrated approach is presented. As no significant evidence for space clustering is found in the ANTARES data, upper limits on the one-flavour neutrino flux and fluence are set.
