We present a Web portal for CMS Grid submission and management. The portal is built using a JBoss application server. It has a three tier architecture; presentation, business logic and data. Bean ...based business logic interacts with the underlying Grid infrastructure and pre-existing external applications, while the presentation layer uses AJAX to offer an intuitive, functional interface to the back-end. Application data aggregating information from the portal as well as the external applications is persisted to the server memory cache and then to a backend database. We describe how the portal exploits standard, off-the-shelf commodity software together with existing Grid infrastructures in order to facilitate job submission and monitoring for the CMS collaboration. This paper describes the design, development, current functionality and plans for future enhancements of the portal.

The powerful muon and tracker systems of the CMS detector together with dedicated reconstruction software allow precise and efficient measurement of muon tracks originating from proton-proton ...collisions. The standard muon reconstruction algorithms, however, are inadequate to deal with muons that do not originate from collisions. This note discusses the design, implementation, and performance results of a dedicated cosmic muon track reconstruction algorithm, which features pattern recognition optimized for muons that are not coming from the interaction point, i.e., cosmic muons and beam-halo muons. To evaluate the performance of the new algorithm, data taken during Cosmic Challenge phases I and II were studied and compared with simulated cosmic data. In addition, a variety of more general topologies of cosmic muons and beam-halo muons were studied using simulated data to demonstrate some key features of the new algorithm.
New usage patterns of computing for research have emerged that rely on the availability of flexible, elastic, and highly specialized services, that may not be well suited to traditional batch HPC. A ...new approach that updates and evolves the research computing ecosystem is needed to respond to these needs. This new model, a Kubernetes-based "Community Composable Platform", builds upon Purdue's Community Cluster program to provide cost effective, highly responsive, and customizable composable computing solutions for domain science and education in a variety of communities.
The event display and data quality monitoring visualisation systems are especially crucial for commissioning CMS in the imminent CMS physics run at the LHC. They have already proved invaluable for ...the CMS magnet test and cosmic challenge. We describe how these systems are used to navigate and filter the immense amounts of complex event data from the CMS detector and prepare clear and flexible views of the salient features to the shift crews and offline users. These allow shift staff and experts to navigate from a top-level general view to very specific monitoring elements in real time to help validate data quality and ascertain causes of problems. We describe how events may be accessed in the higher level trigger filter farm, at the CERN Tier-0 centre, and in offsite centres to help ensure good data quality at all points in the data processing workflow. Emphasis has been placed on deployment issues in order to ensure that experts and general users may use the visualization systems at CERN, in remote operations and monitoring centres offsite, and from their own desktops.

In this study, we analyzed the activation of bone-marrow derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) from mice lacking the cd14-gene with purified Legionella pneumophila lipopolysaccharide and with viable or ...formalin-killed L. pneumophila. We found that low concentrations of LPS and doses of L. pneumophila that are relevant to infection are dependent on CD14 to activate BMDCs. Higher concentrations of LPS are able to overcome the lack of CD14 indicating that other receptors are involved. We, therefore, included studies using BMDCs from mice lacking functional TLR2 and/or TLR4 molecules. We found that purified L. pneumophila LPS as well as L. pneumophila either viable or formalin-killed are able to activate BMDCs from TLR4-deficient C3H/HeJ mice but fail to activate BMDCs from TLR2-knockout mice. Our data show that not only purified LPS from L. pneumophila but also the microorganism itself stimulate BMDCs via TLR2 and that this stimulation is dependent on CD14 in this mouse model.
