ABSTRACT
We present a VLT/X-Shooter spectroscopy of the Lyman continuum (LyC) emitting galaxy Ion2 at z = 3.2121 and compare it to that of the recently discovered strongly lensed LyC emitter at ...z = 2.37, known as the Sunburst arc. Three main results emerge from the X-Shooter spectrum: (a) the Ly α has three distinct peaks with the central one at the systemic redshift, indicating a ionized tunnel through which both Ly α and LyC radiation escape; (b) the large O32 oxygen index (O iii λλ4959, 5007/O ii λλ3727, 3729) of $9.18_{-1.32}^{+1.82}$ is compatible to those measured in local (z ∼0.4) LyC leakers; (c) there are narrow nebular high-ionization metal lines with σv < 20 km s−1, which confirms the presence of young hot, massive stars. The He iiλ1640 appears broad, consistent with a young stellar component including Wolf–Rayet stars. Similarly, the Sunburst LyC emitter shows a triple-peaked Ly α profile and from VLT/MUSE spectroscopy the presence of spectral features arising from young hot and massive stars. The strong lensing magnification, (μ > 20), suggests that this exceptional object is a gravitationally bound star cluster observed at a cosmological distance, with a stellar mass M ≲ 107 M⊙ and an effective radius smaller than 20 pc. Intriguingly, sources like Sunburst but without lensing magnification might appear as Ion2-like galaxies, in which unresolved massive star clusters dominate the ultraviolet emission. This work supports the idea that dense young star clusters can contribute to the ionization of the IGM through holes created by stellar feedback.
We carried out a detailed strong lensing analysis of a sub-sample of eight galaxy clusters of the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) in the redshift range of zcluster = 0.23 − ...0.59 using extensive spectroscopic information, primarily from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) archival data and complemented with CLASH-VLT redshift measurements. The observed positions of the multiple images of strongly lensed background sources were used to constrain parametric models describing the cluster total mass distributions. Different models were tested in each cluster depending on the complexity of its mass distribution and on the number of detected multiple images. Four clusters show more than five spectroscopically confirmed multiple image families. In this sample, we did not make use of families that are only photometrically identified in order to reduce model degeneracies between the values of the total mass of a cluster source redshifts, in addition to systematics due to the potential misidentifications of multiple images. For the remaining four clusters, we used additional families without any spectroscopic confirmation to increase the number of strong lensing constraints up to the number of free parameters in our parametric models. We present spectroscopic confirmation of 27 multiply lensed sources, with no previous spectroscopic measurements, spanning over the redshift range of zsrc = 0.7 − 6.1. Moreover, we confirm an average of 48 galaxy members in the core of each cluster thanks to the high efficiency and large field of view of MUSE. We used this information to derive precise strong lensing models, projected total mass distributions, and magnification maps. We show that, despite having different properties (i.e. number of mass components, total mass, redshift, etc.), the projected total mass and mass density profiles of all clusters have very similar shapes when rescaled by independent measurements of M200c and R200c. Specifically, we measured the mean value of the projected total mass of our cluster sample within 10 (20)% of R200c to be 0.13 (0.32) of M200c, with a remarkably small scatter of 5 (6)%. Furthermore, the large number of high-z sources and the precise magnification maps derived in this work for four clusters add up to the sample of high-quality gravitational telescopes to be used to study the faint and distant Universe.
We present homogeneous and accurate iron abundances for 42 Galactic Cepheids based on high resolution (R ~ 38 000) high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N ≥ 100) optical spectra collected with UVES at VLT ...(128 spectra). The above abundances were complemented with high-quality iron abundances provided either by our group (86) or available in the literature. We were careful to derive a common metallicity scale and ended up with a sample of 450 Cepheids. We also estimated accurate individual distances for the entire sample by using homogeneous near-infrared photometry and the reddening free period-Wesenheit relations. The new metallicity gradient is linear over a broad range of Galactocentric distances (RG ~ 5–19 kpc) and agrees quite well with similar estimates available in the literature (–0.060 ± 0.002 dex/kpc). We also uncover evidence that suggests that the residuals of the metallicity gradient are tightly correlated with candidate Cepheid groups (CGs). The candidate CGs have been identified as spatial overdensities of Cepheids located across the thin disk. They account for a significant fraction of the residual fluctuations, and also for the large intrinsic dispersion of the metallicity gradient. We performed a detailed comparison with metallicity gradients based on different tracers: OB stars and open clusters. We found very similar metallicity gradients for ages younger than 3 Gyr, while for older ages we found a shallower slope and an increase in the intrinsic spread. The above findings rely on homogeneous age, metallicity, and distance scales. Finally, by using a large sample of Galactic and Magellanic Cepheids for which accurate iron abundances are available, we found that the dependence of the luminosity amplitude on metallicity is vanishing.

The resulting relative escape fraction of the ionizing radiation emerging from the entire galaxy is higher than 6−12%, whilst it is ≳46 − 93% if inferred from the YMC multiple line of sights. At least 12 additional unresolved star-forming knots with radii spanning the interval 3 − 20 pc (the majority of them likely gravitationally bound star clusters) are identified in the galaxy. A significant fraction (40−60%) of the ultraviolet light of the entire galaxy is located in such bound star clusters. In adopting a formation timescale of the star clusters of 20 Myr, a cluster formation efficiency Γ ≳ 30%. The star formation rate surface density of the Sunburst galaxy (Log

) is consistent with the high inferred Γ, as observed in local galaxies experiencing extreme gas physical conditions. Overall, the presence of a bursty event (i.e., the 3 Myr old YMC with large sSFR) significantly influences the morphology (nucleation), photometry (photometric jumps), and spectroscopic output (nebular emission) of the entire galaxy. Without lensing magnification, the YMC would be associated to an unresolved 0.5 kpc–size star-forming clump. The delensed LyC and UV magnitude
m

(at 1600 Å) of the YMC are ≃30.6 and ≃26.9, whilst the entire galaxy has

≃ 24.8. The Sunburst galaxy shows a relatively large rest-frame equivalent width of EW
rest
(H
β

4959, 5007) ≃ 450 Å, with the YMC contributing to ∼30% (having a local EW
rest
≃ 1100 Å) and ∼1% of the total stellar mass. If O-type (ionizing) stars are mainly forged in star clusters, then such engines were the key ionizing agents during reionization and the increasing occurrence of high equivalent width lines (H
β
+ O
III
) observed at
z
> 6.5 might be an indirect signature of a high frequency of forming massive star clusters (or high Γ) at reionization. Future facilities, which will perform at few tens milliarcsec resolution (e.g., VLT/MAVIS or ELT), will probe bound clusters on moderately magnified (
μ
< 5 − 10) galaxies across cosmic epochs up to reionization.
Radio relics are diffuse radio sources observed in galaxy clusters, probably produced by shock acceleration during cluster-cluster mergers. Their large size, of the order of 1 Mpc, indicates that the ...emitting electrons need to be (re)accelerated locally. The usually invoked diffusive shock acceleration models have been challenged by recent observations and theory. We report the discovery of complex radio emission in the Galaxy cluster PLCKG287.0+32.9, which hosts two relics, a radio halo, and several radio filamentary emission. Optical observations suggest that the cluster is elongated, likely along an intergalactic filament, and displays a significant amount of substructure. The peculiar features of this radio relic are that (1) it appears to be connected to the lobes of a radio galaxy and (2) the radio spectrum steepens on either side of the radio relic. We discuss the origins of these features in the context of particle re-acceleration.
We present a detailed mass reconstruction and a novel study on the substructure properties in the core of the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) and Frontier Fields galaxy ...clusterMACS J0416.1-2403. We reproduce the measured positions of a set of 30 multiple images with a remarkable median offset of only 0.3 by means of a comprehensive strong lensing model comprised of two cluster dark-matter halos, represented by cored elliptical pseudo-isothermal mass distributions, and the cluster member components, parameterized with dual pseudo-isothermal total mass profiles. We investigate the galaxy contribution, both in terms of total and stellar mass, to the total mass budget of the cluster. Our findings of the location and shape of the cluster dark-matter halo density profiles and on the cluster substructures provide intriguing tests of the assumed collisionless, cold nature of dark matter and of the role played by baryons in the process of structure formation.
Abstract
We report on the serendipitous discovery of a z = 4.0, M1500 = −22.20 star-forming galaxy (Ion3) showing copious Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage (∼60 per cent escaping), a remarkable multiple ...peaked Ly α emission, and significant Ly α radiation directly emerging at the resonance frequency. This is the highest redshift confirmed LyC emitter in which the ionizing and Ly α radiation possibly share a common ionized channel (with NH I < 1017.2 cm−2). Ion3 is spatially resolved, it shows clear stellar winds signatures like the P-Cygni N vλ1240 profile, and has blue ultraviolet continuum (β = −2.5 ± 0.25, Fλ ∼ λβ) with weak low-ionization interstellar metal lines. Deep VLT/HAWKI Ks and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6 and 4.5μm imaging show a clear photometric signature of the H α line with equivalent width of 1000 Å rest-frame emerging over a flat continuum (Ks − 4.5μm ≃ 0). From the SED fitting, we derive a stellar mass of 1.5 × 109 M⊙, SFR of 140 M⊙ yr−1 and age of ∼10 Myr, with a low dust extinction, E(B − V) ≲ 0.1, placing the source in the starburst region of the SFR−M* plane. Ion3 shows similar properties of another LyC emitter previously discovered (z = 3.21, Ion2, Vanzella et al. 2016). Ion3 (and Ion2) represents ideal high-redshift reference cases to guide the search for reionizing sources at z > 6.5 with JWST.

We study the spectrophotometric properties of a highly magnified (
) pair of stellar systems identified at
z
= 3.2222 behind the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS J0416. Five ...multiple images (out of six) have been spectroscopically confirmed by means of VLT/MUSE and VLT/X-Shooter observations. Each image includes two faint (
), young (
Myr), low-mass (
), low-metallicity (12 + Log(O/H) ≃ 7.7, or 1/10 solar), and compact (30 pc effective radius) stellar systems separated by
pc after correcting for lensing amplification. We measured several rest-frame ultraviolet and optical narrow (
km s
−1
) high-ionization lines. These features may be the signature of very hot (
K) stars within dense stellar clusters, whose dynamical mass is likely dominated by the stellar component. Remarkably, the ultraviolet metal lines are not accompanied by Ly
α
emission (e.g., C
iv
/Ly
α
), despite the fact that the Ly
α
line flux is expected to be 150 times brighter (inferred from the H
β
flux). A spatially offset, strongly magnified (
) Ly
α
emission with a spatial extent
kpc
2
is instead identified 2 kpc away from the system. The origin of such a faint emission could be the result of fluorescent Ly
α
induced by a transverse leakage of ionizing radiation emerging from the stellar systems and/or may be associated with an underlying and barely detected object (with
de-lensed). This is the first confirmed metal-line emitter at such low-luminosity and redshift without Ly
α
emission—suggesting that, at least in some cases, a non-uniform covering factor of the neutral gas might hamper the Ly
α
detection.
Aims. We perform a comprehensive study of the total mass distribution of the galaxy cluster RXC J2248.7−4431 (z = 0.348) with a set of high-precision strong lensing models, which take advantage of ...extensive spectroscopic information on many multiply lensed systems. In the effort to understand and quantify inherent systematics in parametric strong lensing modelling, we explore a collection of 22 models in which we use different samples of multiple image families, different parametrizations of the mass distribution and cosmological parameters. Methods. As input information for the strong lensing models, we use the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) imaging data and spectroscopic follow-up observations, with the VIsible Multi-Object Spectrograph (VIMOS) and Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT), to identify and characterize bona fide multiple image families and measure their redshifts down to mF814W ≃ 26. A total of 16 background sources, over the redshift range 1.0−6.1, are multiply lensed into 47 images, 24 of which are spectroscopically confirmed and belong to ten individual sources. These also include a multiply lensed Lyman-α blob at z = 3.118. The cluster total mass distribution and underlying cosmology in the models are optimized by matching the observed positions of the multiple images on the lens plane. Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques are used to quantify errors and covariances of the best-fit parameters. Results. We show that with a careful selection of a large sample of spectroscopically confirmed multiple images, the best-fit model can reproduce their observed positions with a rms scatter of 0.̋3 in a fixed flat ΛCDM cosmology, whereas the lack of spectroscopic information or the use of inaccurate photometric redshifts can lead to biases in the values of the model parameters. We find that the best-fit parametrization for the cluster total mass distribution is composed of an elliptical pseudo-isothermal mass distribution with a significant core for the overall cluster halo and truncated pseudo-isothermal mass profiles for the cluster galaxies. We show that by adding bona fide photometric-selected multiple images to the sample of spectroscopic families, one can slightly improve constraints on the model parameters. In particular, we find that the degeneracy between the lens total mass distribution and the underlying geometry of the Universe, which is probed via angular diameter distance ratios between the lens and sources and the observer and sources, can be partially removed. Allowing cosmological parameters to vary together with the cluster parameters, we find (at 68% confidence level) Ωm = 0.25+ 0.13-0.16 and w = −1.07+ 0.16-0.42 for a flat ΛCDM model, and Ωm = 0.31+ 0.12-0.13 and ΩΛ = 0.38+ 0.38-0.27 for a Universe with w = −1 and free curvature. Finally, using toy models mimicking the overall configuration of multiple images and cluster total mass distribution, we estimate the impact of the line-of-sight mass structure on the positional rms to be 0.̋3 ± 0. We argue that the apparent sensitivity of our lensing model to cosmography is due to the combination of the regular potential shape of RXC J2248, a large number of bona fide multiple images out to z = 6.1, and a relatively modest presence of intervening large-scale structure, as revealed by our spectroscopic survey.
Abstract
We exploit James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam observations from the GLASS-JWST-Early Release Science program to investigate galaxy stellar masses at
z
> 7. We first show that JWST ...observations reduce the uncertainties on the stellar mass by a factor of at least 5–10, when compared with the highest-quality data sets available to date. We then study the UV mass-to-light ratio, finding that galaxies exhibit a a two orders of magnitude range of
M
/
L
UV
values for a given luminosity, indicative of a broad variety of physical conditions and star formation histories. As a consequence, previous estimates of the cosmic stellar-mass density—based on an average correlation between UV luminosity and stellar mass—can be biased by as much as a factor of ∼6. Our first exploration demonstrates that JWST represents a new era in our understanding of stellar masses at
z
> 7 and, therefore, of the growth of galaxies prior to cosmic reionization.
