The cylindrical drift chamber is the most innovative part of the MEG II detector, the upgraded version of the MEG experiment. The MEG II chamber differs from the MEG one because it is a single volume ...cylindrical structure, instead of a segmented one, chosen to improve its resolutions and efficiency in detecting low energy positrons from muon decays at rest. In this paper, we show the characteristics and performances of this fundamental part of the MEG II apparatus and we discuss the impact of its higher resolution and efficiency on the sensitivity of the MEG II experiment. Because of its innovative structure and high quality resolution and efficiency the MEG II cylindrical drift chamber will be a cornerstone in the development of an ideal tracking detector for future positron-electron collider machines.
Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) show a high electrical conductivity but a reduced specific surface area that limits their use as electrode materials for supercapacitors. In this work, amorphous CNFs, with a ...relatively high electrical conductivity are easily activated in KOH, using certain KOH/CNF weight ratios. Activation does not produce any important change in the shape, surface roughness, diameter, graphene sheet size, and electrical conductivity of starting nanofibers. However, activation leads to new micropores and larger surface areas as well as a higher content of basic oxygen groups. They clearly enhanced the specific capacitance, attaining values higher than those reported for other activated CNFs. In this study, the effects of micropore size and oxygen content on the specific capacitance are discussed for three electrolytes: H2SO4, KOH, and (CH3CH2)4NBF4. Moreover, a good cycle life is found for the most activated CNFs.

The MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) represents the state of the art in the search for the charged Lepton Flavor Violating μ+→e+γ decay, setting the most stringent upper limit on ...the BR (μ+→e+γ)≤4.2×10−13 (90% C.L.). An upgrade of MEG, MEG II, was designed, commissioned and recently started the physics data taking. Its goal is to reach a sensitivity level of 6×10−14. In order to reconstruct the positron momentum vector a Cylindrical Drift CHamber (CDCH) with unprecedented peculiarities was built, featuring angular and momentum resolutions at the 6.5 mrad and 100 keV/c level. The CDCH is a 2-meter long, 60 cm in diameter, low-mass, single volume detector with high granularity: 9 layers of 192 drift cells, few mm wide, defined by ∼12000 wires in a stereo configuration for longitudinal hit localization. The filling gas mixture is Helium:Isobutane 90:10. The total radiation length is 1.5×10−3 X0, thus minimizing the Multiple Coulomb Scattering and allowing for a single-hit resolution <120μm. After the assembly at INFN Pisa, the CDCH was transported to PSI and integrated into the MEG II experimental apparatus since 2018. The commissioning phase lasted for the past three years until the operational stability was reached in 2020. The analysis software is continuously developing and the tuning of the reconstruction algorithms is one of the main activities. The latest updates on the positron momentum vector resolutions and tracking efficiency are presented.
We studied the diet composition and diet overlap in sympatric red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) and fallow deer (Dama dama) throughout a whole year in order to determine variation due to season, ...species, sex and age class by analysing rumen contents samples of 81 red and 69 fallow deer shot monthly during 2008–09 in Sierra de Andújar Natural Park, southern Spain. We assessed diet similarity and possible inter- and intra-specific foraging competition. We found different foraging strategies for both species and sexes during constraint periods, and several theoretical considerations of specific interactions and behaviour are discussed with respect to the Mediterranean environment. In both species an annual diet dominated by grasses was recorded, peaking in spring. Browses were an important food resource at the end of winter and at the end of summer, and fruit more in autumn and winter. Red deer ingested a higher proportion of browse than fallow deer, which consumed more acorns and for a longer time showed a better ability to compensate for nutritional constraint periods. An overall decline in diet similarity in summer and at the end of winter led us to assume that exploitative competition between red and fallow deer and even between sexes was probable. Red deer females showed low diet similarity to other deer, while there was a great diet overlap between red deer males and fallow deer females at the end of summer. Differences detected between both two species and sexes do not always support predictions deriving from specific body size and morpho-physiological characteristics, but can probably be explained as a consequence of different metabolic demands. The relationship between plant nutritional attributes and food selection according to reproductive or physiological status and seasonal demands for both sexes and species should be researched in order to perform a better assessment of deer feeding behaviour.
The performance as electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) in non-aqueous electrolyte of a series of alkaline agent-activated carbons with high surface area is presented in this work. The results ...obtained show that, in general, capacitance increases with surface area. However, the results obtained in this study confirm that capacitance not only depends on surface area, but also on two other parameters: pore size distribution and surface chemistry. It has been shown that capacitance is higher for a sample with wider micropore size distribution than for a sample with higher surface area but too narrow micropore size distribution. In addition, it has been observed that the sample with a very high amount of surface groups presents very high capacitance values. In the present study, a KOH-activated carbon with a capacitance as high as 220 F/g was prepared. Finally, the results obtained with a mesoporous sample have shown that the presence of mesopores in activated carbons with very high surface area (e.g. >2000 m
2/g), do not seem to be effective for double layer capacitors.

An upgrade of MEG, MEG II, was designed and it recently started the physics data taking, with the aim to reach a sensitivity level of 6×10−14. The Cylindrical Drift CHamber (CDCH) is a key detector in order to improve the e+ angular and momentum resolutions at the 6.5 mrad and 100 keV/c level. The CDCH is a low-mass single volume detector with high granularity: 9 layers of 192 drift cells each, few mm wide, defined by 12000 wires in a stereo configuration for longitudinal hit localization. After the assembly, the CDCH was transported to PSI for the commissioning phase and it has been integrated into the MEG II experimental apparatus since 2018. The operational stability was reached in 2020 and the complete readout electronics was tested for the first time in 2021. A preliminary analysis of 2020–2021 data is presented.
Diffusion-weighted imaging may aid in distinguishing aggressive chordoma from nonaggressive chordoma. This study explores the prognostic role of the apparent diffusion coefficient in chordomas.
...Sixteen patients with residual or recurrent chordoma were divided postoperatively into those with an aggressive tumor, defined as a growing tumor having a doubling time of <1 year, and those with a nonaggressive tumor on follow-up MR images. The ability of the ADC to predict an aggressive tumor phenotype was investigated by receiver operating characteristic analysis. The prognostic role of ADC was assessed using a Kaplan-Meier curve with a log-rank test.
Seven patients died during a median follow-up of 48 months (range, 4-126 months). Five of these 7 patients were in the aggressive tumor group, and 2 were in the nonaggressive tumor group. The mean ADC was significantly lower in the aggressive tumor group than in the nonaggressive tumor group (
= .002). Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that a cutoff ADC value of 1.494 × 10
× mm
/s could be used to diagnose aggressive tumors with an area under the curve of 0.983 (95% CI, 0.911-1.000), a sensitivity of 1.000 (95% CI, 0.541-1.000), and a specificity of 0.900 (95% CI, 0.555-0.998). Furthermore, a cutoff ADC of ≤1.494 × 10
× mm
/s was associated with a significantly worse prognosis (
= .006).
Lower ADC values could predict tumor progression in postoperative chordomas.
Amorphous carbon nanofibers (CNFs), produced by the polymer blend technique, are activated by CO2 (ACNFs). Monoliths are synthesized from the precursor and from some ACNFs. Morphology and textural ...properties of these materials are studied. When compared with other activating agents (steam and alkaline hydroxides), CO2 activation renders suitable yields and, contrarily to most other precursors, turns out to be advantageous for developing and controlling their narrow microporosity (<0.7 nm), VDR(CO2). The obtained ACNFs have a high compressibility and, consequently, a high packing density under mechanical pressure which can also be maintained upon monolith synthesis. H2 adsorption is measured at two different conditions (77 K/0.11 MPa, and 298 K/20 MPa) and compared with other activated carbons. Under both conditions, H2 uptake depends on the narrow microporosity of the prepared ACNFs. Interestingly, at room temperature these ACNFs perform better than other activated carbons, despite their lower porosity developments. At 298 K they reach a H2 adsorption capacity as high as 1.3 wt.%, and a remarkable value of 1 wt.% in its mechanically resistant monolith form.
Effects of two factors on the mechanical properties of clay mineral/polypropylene nanocomposites were examined. The first factor is the presence of a small amount of poly(diacetone acrylamide) formed ...between clay mineral layers. This material was expected to separate effectively the stacked layer structure of the clay mineral on mixing with polypropylene. The stacked layer structure, however, was not separated sufficiently in spite of expansion of the interlayer distance of clay mineral, leading to poor improvement of the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite. Another factor is the kind of clay mineral. Montmorillonite and mica resulted in less favorable separation of the stacked structure than hectorite, but the resulting nanocomposites gave outstanding improvement of the properties. The stiffness of clay mineral layer was considered to influence the properties of the nanocomposite strongly.
