Power quality is a pressing concern and of the utmost importance for advanced and high-tech equipment in particular, whose performance relies heavily on the supply’s quality. Power quality issues ...like voltage sags/swells, harmonics, interruptions, etc. are defined as any deviations in current, voltage, or frequency that result in end-use equipment damage or failure. Sensitive loads like medical equipment in hospitals and health clinics, schools, prisons, etc. malfunction for the outages and interruptions, thereby causing substantial economic losses. For enhancing power quality, custom power devices (CPDs) are recommended, among which the Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is considered as the best and cost-effective solution. DVR is a power electronic-based solution to mitigate and compensate voltage sags. This paper provides a thorough discussion and comprehensive review of DVR topologies based on operations, power converters, control methods, and applications. The review compares the state-of-the-art in works of literature, and comparative study on power quality issues, the DVR principle along with its operation modes, the DVR components, the DVR topologies based on energy storage, the DVR topologies based on single-/three-phase power converters, and the DVR topologies based on control units that have different control processing stages. Furthermore, modified and improved configurations of the DVR, as well as its integration with distributed generations, are described. This work serves as a comprehensive and useful reference for those who have an interest in researching DVRs.
This paper presents a comprehensive review of advanced technologies with various control approaches in terms of their respective merits and outcomes for power grids. Distributed energy storage ...control is classified into automatic voltage regulator and load frequency control according to corresponding functionalities. These control strategies maintain a power balance between generation and demand. Besides, three basic electric vehicle charging technologies can be distinguished, i.e. stationary, quasi-dynamic and dynamic control. For realizing charge-sustaining operation at minimum cost quasi-dynamic and dynamic strategies are adopted for in-route charging, while stationary control can only be utilized when the electric vehicle is in stationary mode. Moreover, power system frequency stability and stabilization techniques in non-synchronous generator systems are reviewed in the paper. Specifically, a synchronverter can damp power system oscillations and ensure stability by providing virtual inertia. Furthermore, it is crucial to manage the massive information and ensure its security in the smart grid. Therefore, several attack detection and mitigation schemes against cyber-attacks are further presented to achieve reliable, resilient, and stable operation of the cyber-physical power system. Thus, bidirectional electrical power flows with two-way digital control and communication capabilities have poised the energy producers and utilities to restructure the conventional power system into a robust smart distribution grid. These new functionalities and applications provide a pathway for clean energy technology. Finally, future research trends on smart grids such as IoT-based communication infrastructure, distributed demand-response with artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions, and synchrophasor-based wide-area monitoring protection and control (WAMPC) are examined in the present study.
This paper discusses the power quality issues for distributed generation systems based on renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy. A thorough discussion about the power quality issues ...is conducted here. This paper starts with the power quality issues, followed by discussions of basic standards. A comprehensive study of power quality in power systems, including the systems with dc and renewable sources is done in this paper. Power quality monitoring techniques and possible solutions of the power quality issues for the power systems are elaborately studied. Then, we analyze the methods of mitigation of these problems using custom power devices, such as D-STATCOM, UPQC, UPS, TVSS, DVR, etc., for micro grid systems. For renewable energy systems, STATCOM can be a potential choice due to its several advantages, whereas spinning reserve can enhance the power quality in traditional systems. At Last, we study the power quality in dc systems. Simpler arrangement and higher reliability are two main advantages of the dc systems though it faces other power quality issues, such as instability and poor detection of faults.
This paper proposes a novel single‐phase switched‐capacitor‐based inverter configuration that in its basic form can generate an 11‐level staircase output voltage waveform with sinusoidal output ...current for Resistive‐Inductive (R‐L) loads. The increased levels, quintuple voltage‐boosting factor, and natural voltage‐balancing of capacitors are considered the main features of the proposed basic configuration. The proposed topology requires fewer components (resources, switches, driver circuits, and capacitors) than recently presented similar structures to acquire the same voltage gain and output steps. The proposed basic configuration can be extended in two ways: increasing levels and/or boosting factors with minimal devices. The employment of two half‐bridges (rather than an H‐bridge) for generating bipolar waveform has limited the number of switches tolerating the maximum output voltage to 2 (instead of 4), which results in reduced total blocking voltage (TBV) and accordingly reduced cost and losses. A comprehensive comparative analysis has been done and presented to verify the supremacy of the suggested structure. The experimental results of the laboratory‐scaled prototype of the proposed basic topology have been provided, which approve its correct performance.
Microgrid, because of its advantages over conventional utility grids, is a prudent approach to implement renewable resource-based electricity generation. Despite its advantages, microgrid has to ...operate with a significant proportion of constant power loads that exhibit negative incremental impedance and thus cause serious instability in the system. In this paper, a comprehensive review is presented on accomplished research work on stabilization of dc and ac microgrid. After reviewing these, microgrid system stabilization techniques are classified with required discussions. As found out in this paper, the stabilization techniques can basically be classified as compensation done: 1) at feeder side; 2) by adding intermediate circuitry; and 3) at load side. Finally, after analyzing the merits and drawbacks of each generalized technique, several infographics are presented to highlight the key findings of this paper.

Moreover, single Cuk converter is operated as impedance power adapter to execute MPPT functioning. Here, ACO-based MPPT has been implemented with no voltage and current extra circuit requirement compared to existing evolutionary algorithms single cuk converter is employed to improve conversion efficiency of converter by maximizing power stages. DC-link voltage can be regulated by placing Cuk converter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) linked rectifier and inverter. The proposed MPPT method is responsible for rapid battery charging and gives power dispersion of battery for hybrid PV-Wind system. ACO-based MPPT provides seven times faster convergence compared to the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for achievement of maximum power point (MPP) and tracking efficiency. This paper proposes a new multistage AC model for transmission expansion planning that finds an optimal combination of transmission lines, fault current‐limiting high‐temperature superconducting ...cables, and multiple distributed generations (DGs). On this basis, the proposed model, from a new perspective, allows for simultaneous improvement of the short‐circuit level and grid‐scale flexibility (GFLX) under both normal and fault conditions. The objective function to be minimized includes not only the net present worth of the total investment and operation costs but also the congestion‐induced GFLX degradation measure. This model also takes the AC power balance and flow relationships, equipment capacity limits, nodal voltage bounds, DG penetration level limit, as well as discrete logical and financial restrictions together into account with the short‐circuit level constraint. To overcome the complexity of solving the resultant non‐convex mixed‐integer non‐linear optimization problem, a multi‐objective integer‐coded melody search algorithm is employed, followed by a fuzzy satisfying decision‐making mechanism to obtain the final optimal solution. The exhaustive case studies conducted on the IEEE 24‐ and 118‐bus test systems verify the efficacy of the newly developed model in terms of cost‐effectiveness, flexibility, and short‐circuit level suppression when facing different normal and fault conditions.

In the last few decades, the utilization of fuel cells (FCs) in the automotive industry has created much attention due to easy use, modular structure, and higher efficacy. In the future, ...technological evolutions reveal that FC driven electric vehicles (EVs) will grow at a rapid pace and will become an excellent alternative to conventional vehicles. This paper discusses a detailed topological classification of the FC‐based hybrid electric vehicle (FCHEV). In these FCHEVs, one of the critical elements is the DC–DC power converter unit. The hybridization of FCs with the other power sources requires more converter units that make the system complex. A multi‐input DC–DC power converter is used to connect more than one energy source to reduce the system's complexity and improve the overall system efficacy. In this survey, numerous articles have been considered and examined vividly. An assessment of present and future scenarios of FCs based power source topologies and multi‐input DC–DC power converter topologies used in HEV is presented. This survey provides a deep insight into the topic for the researchers and engineers working in this field.
