Background: Recently, a systematic exploration of two-neutron transfer induced by the (\(^{18}\)O, \(^{16}\)O) reaction on different targets has been performed. The high resolution data have been ...collected at the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer of the INFN-LNS laboratory in Catania and analyzed with the coupled reaction channel (CRC) approach. The simultaneous and sequential transfers of the two neutrons have been considered under the same theoretical framework without the need of adjustable factors in the calculations. Purpose: A detailed analysis of the one-neutron transfer cross sections is important to study the sequential two-neutron transfer. Here, we examine the (\(^{18}\)O, \(^{17}\)O) reaction on \(^{16}\)O, \(^{28}\)Si and \(^{64}\)Ni targets. These even-even nuclei allow for investigation of one-neutron transfer in distinct nuclear shell spaces. Method: The MAGNEX spectrometer was used to measure mass spectra of ejectiles and extract differential cross sections of one-neutron transfer to low-lying states. We adopted the same CRC formalism used in the sequential two-neutron transfer, including relevant channels and using spectroscopic amplitudes obtained from shell model calculations. We also compare with one-step distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA). Results: For the \(^{18}\)O + \(^{16}\)O and the \(^{18}\)O + \(^{28}\)O systems we used two interactions in the shell model. The experimental angular distributions are reasonably well reproduced by the CRC calculations. In the \(^{18}\)O + \(^{64}\)Ni system, we considered only one interaction and the theoretical curve describes the shape and order of magnitude observed in the experimental data. Conclusions: Comparisons between experimental, DWBA and CRC angle-integrated cross sections suggest that excitations before or after the transfer of neutron is relevant in the \(^{18}\)O + \(^{16}\)O and \(^{18}\)O + \(^{64}\)Ni systems.
Twenty-seven species of calyptrate muscoids (Muscidae and Sarcophagidae) were collected from December 1993 to November 1994 with wind oriented traps (W.O.T.) baited with decomposing beef liver at the ...Rio de Janeiro Zoo. The most abundant species found were Musca domestica (57.84%), Peckia chrysostoma (28.16%), Ophyra aenescens (17.11%), Oxysarcodexia thornax (17.82%), Synthesiomyia nudiseta (13.05%), and Oxysarcodexia diana (14.52%).

The response of components of the coagulation and fibrinolytic systems has been examined in patients undergoing minor and major elective surgery and receiving or not receiving subcutaneously ...administered prophylactic low molecular weight (LMW) heparin. Blood samples were withdrawn pre-operation (PO), post-anaesthesia (PA), during operation (DO) and 24 hours post-operation. Release of plasminogen activator occurred post anaesthesia at a time when factor VIII components were unchanged or decreased. Induction of anaesthesia decreased plasminogen (p less than 0.005) fibrinogen (p less than 0.02) ATIII (p less than 0.002) and fast a2-antiplasmin (p less than 0.005). During operation plasminogen activator release reached a peak in association with a moderate increase in factor VIII components. Heparin treatment produced a prolongation of APTT at DO (p less than 0.05) and at 24hr (p less than 0.002) stages, this prolongation being apparently unrelated to its concentration but did not prevent the rise of factor VIII components observed at 24 hr (p less than 0.02). Prekallikrein (p less than 0.05) and antithrombin III levels (p less than 0.05) were significantly higher whereas fast a2-antiplasmin (p less than 0.002) was significantly lower at 24 hours in patients undergoing major operation and treated with heparin. Protein C levels fell significantly at 24 hours in the untreated patient (p less than 0.014) and in the heparin treated group the fall was greater than the control group (p less than 0.007). At 24 hours other haemostatic and fibrinolytic components were unaffected by heparin treatment.
To evaluate the putative role of metals and trace elements in the pathogenesis of classic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, we studied the metallothionein levels in liver and kidney samples obtained at ...autopsy from 24 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and 18 controls. To assay metallothioneins and copper, cadmium, and zinc bound to metallothioneins, we used high-performance liquid chromatography directly coupled to flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Total cadmium, zinc, and copper concentrations were determined separately with the use of graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman background correction. The median liver metallothionein level was 60.3 mg/kg (range, 9 to 318 mg/kg) in the patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and 12.6 mg/kg (range, 0 to 104.5 mg/kg) in the controls. In the kidney, median metallothionein levels were 126.9 mg/kg (range, 44 to 387 mg/kg) in the patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and 64 mg/kg (range, 13.1 to 187 mg/kg) in the controls. Total zinc, cadmium, and copper concentrations, as measured by atomic absorption spectrometry, were not significantly different in patients vs controls. Our finding of elevated metallothionein levels in organs from patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis may indicate an increased exposure to metals.

This study aims to verify the use of the touch by nurses according to LE MAY'S proposal (1986), as well as to verify when and why he uses it, according to his own perception. Thirty-seven nurses (20 teachers, 16 assistants and 01 who was attending a specialization course) were interviewed in September 1995 in the capital and other cities of the State of São Paulo, showing that the majority of the collected samples mentioned touch in an expressive manner, referring to using it mainly to demonstrate empathies and security on moments where patient's emotion were perceived.

Elastic scattering of the weakly bound {sup 6}Li on {sup 27}Al was measured at near-barrier energies. The data analysis was performed using a Woods-Saxon shape optical potential and also using the ...double-folding Sao Paulo potential. The results show the presence of the breakup threshold anomaly (BTA), an anomalous behavior when compared with the scattering of tightly bound nuclei. This behavior is attributed to a repulsive polarization potential produced by the coupling to the continuum breakup states.
