Mycoses summarized in the hyalohyphomycosis group are heterogeneous, defined by the presence of hyaline (non-dematiaceous) hyphae. The number of organisms implicated in hyalohyphomycosis is ...increasing and the most clinically important species belong to the genera Fusarium, Scedosporium, Acremonium, Scopulariopsis, Purpureocillium and Paecilomyces. Severely immunocompromised patients are particularly vulnerable to infection, and clinical manifestations range from colonization to chronic localized lesions to acute invasive and/or disseminated diseases. Diagnosis usually requires isolation and identification of the infecting pathogen. A poor prognosis is associated with fusariosis and early therapy of localized disease is important to prevent progression to a more aggressive or disseminated infection. Therapy should include voriconazole and surgical debridement where possible or posaconazole as salvage treatment. Voriconazole represents the first-line treatment of infections due to members of the genus Scedosporium. For Acremonium spp., Scopulariopsis spp., Purpureocillium spp. and Paecilomyces spp. the optimal antifungal treatment has not been established. Management usually consists of surgery and antifungal treatment, depending on the clinical presentation.

The importance of rivers and streams for fresh water, food, and recreation is well known, yet there is increasing evidence that degradation of running waters is at an all-time high. However, most ...restoration projects are small scale, and information on their implementation and outcome is not readily accessible. Here, Bernhardt et al report a synthesis of information on 37,099 projects in the National River Restoration Science Synthesis database.
Infectious agents, mainly viruses, are among the few known causes of cancer and contribute to a variety of malignancies worldwide. The agents and cancers considered here are human papillomaviruses ...(cervical carcinoma); human polyomaviruses (mesotheliomas, brain tumors); Epstein-Barr virus (B-cell lymphoproliferative diseases and nasopharyngeal carcinoma); Kaposi’s Sarcoma Herpesvirus (Kaposi’s Sarcoma and primary effusion lymphomas); hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses (hepatocellular carcinoma); Human T-cell Leukemia Virus-1 (T-cell leukemias); and
helicobacter pylori (gastric carcinoma), which account for up to 20% of malignancies around the globe. The criteria most often used in determining causality are consistency of the association, either epidemiologic or on the molecular level, and oncogenicity of the agent in animal models or cell cultures. However use of these generally applied criteria in deciding on causality is selective, and the criteria may be weighted differently. Whereas for most of the tumor viruses the viral genome persists in an integrated or episomal form with a subset of viral genes expressed in the tumor cells, some agents (HBV, HCV, helicobacter) are not inherently oncogenic, but infection leads to transformation of cells by indirect means. For some malignancies the viral agent appears to serve as a cofactor (Burkitt’s lymphoma-EBV; mesothelioma - SV
40). For others the association is inconsistent (Hodgkin’s Disease, gastric carcinomas, breast cancer-EBV) and may either define subsets of these malignancies, or the virus may act to modify phenotype of an established tumor, contributing to tumor progression rather than causing the tumor. In these cases and for the human polyomaviruses the association with malignancy is less consistent or still emerging. In contrast despite the potent oncogenic properties of some strains of human adenovirus in tissue culture and animals the virus has not been linked with any human cancers. Finally it is likely that more agents, most likely viruses, both known and unidentified, have yet to be implicated in human cancer. In the meantime study of tumorigenic infectious agents will continue to illuminate molecular oncogenic processes.
Abnormalities of the immune system are rarely reported in patients affected by RASopathies. Aim of the current study was to investigate the prevalence of immune system dysfunction in a cohort of ...patients affected by RASopathies.
A group of 69 patients was enrolled: 60 at the Federico II University, Naples, 7 at University Magna Graecia of Catanzaro, 2 at "Scuola Medica Salernitana", Salerno. An age- and sex-matched control group was also enrolled. Autoimmune disorders were investigated according to international consensus criteria. Immune framework was also evaluated by immunoglobulin levels, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD19, CD56 lymphocyte subpopulations, autoantibodies levels and panel of inflammatory molecules, in both patients and controls.
Frequent upper respiratory tract infections were recorded in 2 patients; pneumonia, psoriasis and alopecia in single patients. Low IgA levels were detected in 8/44 patients (18.18%), low CD8 T cells in 13/35 patients (37.14%). Anti-tg and anti-TPO antibodies were detected in 3/24 patients (12.5%), anti r-TSH in 2 cases (8.33%), all in euthyroidism. Serum IgA and CD8 levels were significantly lower in patients than in controls (p 0.00685; p 0.000656 respectively). All tested patients showed increased inflammatory molecules compared to controls. These findings may anticipate the detection of overt autoimmune disease.
Patients affected by RASopathies are at risk to develop autoimmune disorders. Routine screening for autoimmunity is recommended in patients with RASopathy.
Lomentospora prolificans is an emerging cause of serious invasive fungal infections. Optimal treatment of these infections is unknown, although voriconazole-containing treatment regimens are ...considered the treatment of choice. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of combination antifungal therapy for L. prolificans infections.
We performed a retrospective review of medical records of patients with invasive L. prolificans infection diagnosed between 1 January 2008 and 9 September 2019 that were documented in the FungiScope® registry of rare invasive fungal infections. We compared clinical outcomes between antifungal treatment strategies.
Over the study period, 41 individuals with invasive L. prolificans infection from eight different countries were documented in the FungiScope® registry. Overall, 17/40 (43%) had treatment response/stable disease and 21/40 (53%) had a fatal outcome attributed to invasive fungal infection. Combination antifungal therapy was associated with increased 28-day survival (15/24 survived versus 4/16 receiving monotherapy; p 0.027) and the combination voriconazole plus terbinafine trended to be associated with higher rates of treatment success (10/16, 63%, 95% CI 35%–85%) compared with other antifungal treatment regimens (7/24, 29%, 95% CI 13%–51%, p 0.053). In Kaplan–Meier survival analysis there was a higher survival probability in individuals receiving the voriconazole/terbinafine combination compared with other antifungal regimens (median survival 150 days versus 17 days).
While overall mortality was high, combination antifungal treatment, and in particular combination therapy with voriconazole plus terbinafine may be associated with improved treatment outcomes compared with other antifungal regimens for the treatment of invasive L. prolificans infections.
1. Increasingly, river managers are turning from hard engineering solutions to ecologically based restoration activities in order to improve degraded waterways. River restoration projects aim to ...maintain or increase ecosystem goods and services while protecting downstream and coastal ecosystems. There is growing interest in applying river restoration techniques to solve environmental problems, yet little agreement exists on what constitutes a successful river restoration effort. 2. We propose five criteria for measuring success, with emphasis on an ecological perspective. First, the design of an ecological river restoration project should be based on a specified guiding image of a more dynamic, healthy river that could exist at the site. Secondly, the river's ecological condition must be measurably improved. Thirdly, the river system must be more self-sustaining and resilient to external perturbations so that only minimal follow-up maintenance is needed. Fourthly, during the construction phase, no lasting harm should be inflicted on the ecosystem. Fifthly, both pre- and post-assessment must be completed and data made publicly available. 3. Determining if these five criteria have been met for a particular project requires development of an assessment protocol. We suggest standards of evaluation for each of the five criteria and provide examples of suitable indicators. 4. Synthesis and applications. Billions of dollars are currently spent restoring streams and rivers, yet to date there are no agreed upon standards for what constitutes ecologically beneficial stream and river restoration. We propose five criteria that must be met for a river restoration project to be considered ecologically successful. It is critical that the broad restoration community, including funding agencies, practitioners and citizen restoration groups, adopt criteria for defining and assessing ecological success in restoration. Standards are needed because progress in the science and practice of river restoration has been hampered by the lack of agreed upon criteria for judging ecological success. Without well-accepted criteria that are ultimately supported by funding and implementing agencies, there is little incentive for practitioners to assess and report restoration outcomes. Improving methods and weighing the ecological benefits of various restoration approaches require organized national-level reporting systems.
Here we report large-amplitude transit timing variations (TTVs) for AU Microcopii b and c as detected in combined TESS (2018, 2020) and CHEOPS (2020, 2021) transit observations. AU Mic is a young ...planetary system with a debris disk and two transiting warm Neptunes. A TTV on the order of several minutes was previously reported for AU Mic b, which was suggested to be an outcome of mutual perturbations between the planets in the system. In 2021, we observed AU Mic b (five transits) and c (three transits) with the CHEOPS space telescope to follow-up the TTV of AU Mic b and possibly detect a TTV for AU Mic c. When analyzing TESS and CHEOPS 2020−2021 measurements together, we find that a prominent TTV emerges with a full span of ≥23 min between the two TTV extrema. Assuming that the period change results from a periodic process –such as mutual perturbations– we demonstrate that the times of transits in the summer of 2022 are expected to be 30−85 min later than predicted by the available linear ephemeris.

EBLM J0113+31 is a moderately bright (V = 10.1), metal-poor (Fe/H ≈−0.3) G0V star with a much fainter M dwarf companion on a wide, eccentric orbit (= 14.3 d). We have used near-infrared ...spectroscopy obtained with the SPIRou spectrograph to measure the semi-amplitude of the M dwarf’s spectroscopic orbit, and high-precision photometry of the eclipse and transit from the CHEOPS and TESS space missions to measure the geometry of this binary system. From the combined analysis of these data together with previously published observations, we obtain the following model-independent masses and radii: M1 = 1.029 ± 0.025 M⊙, M2 = 0.197 ± 0.003 M⊙, R1 = 1.417 ± 0.014 R⊙, R2 = 0.215 ± 0.002 R⊙. Using R1 and the parallax from Gaia EDR3 we find that this star’s angular diameter is θ = 0.0745 ± 0.0007 mas. The apparent bolometric flux of the G0V star corrected for both extinction and the contribution from the M dwarf (<0.2 per cent) is ${\mathcal {F}}_{\oplus ,0} = (2.62\pm 0.05)\times 10^{-9}$ erg cm−2 s−1. Hence, this G0V star has an effective temperature $T_{\rm eff,1} = 6124{\rm \, K} \pm 40{\rm \, K\, (rnd.)} \pm 10 {\rm \, K\, (sys.)}$. EBLM J0113+31 is an ideal benchmark star that can be used for ‘end-to-end’ tests of the stellar parameters measured by large-scale spectroscopic surveys, or stellar parameters derived from asteroseismology with PLATO. The techniques developed here can be applied to many other eclipsing binaries in order to create a network of such benchmark stars.

Within optimal foraging theory animals should maximize their net energy gain while minimizing energetic costs. Energetic expenditure in wild animals is therefore key to measure proxies of ...fitness. Accelerometers are an effective tool to study animal movement-based energetics, but retrieval of the device is usually required and often difficult. Accelerometers measure movement across three axes (
x
,
y
, and
z
) and can be calibrated to measures of oxygen consumption from captive animals, providing estimates of overall energy expenditure. Measuring energetic expenditures using a global positioning system (GPS) approach could provide an alternative method to study energetic ecology. This technique uses locomotor speeds across a range of slopes from successive GPS locations, which can be linked to the energy expenditure from captive individuals. We compared accelerometer and GPS methods of energetic expenditures in free-roaming brown bears (
Ursus arctos
) on the Kodiak Archipelago, Alaska, USA. We then applied the GPS method to examine how multiple factors influenced brown bear movement-based daily energetic expenditures (MDEE). We found that while the two energetic measurements differed (Wilcoxon signed rank test:

< 0.001). The GPS method on average provided 1.6 times greater energy estimates than the accelerometer method. Brown bears had lower MDEE during periods of high food abundance, supporting optimal foraging theory. Reproductive status and age did not influence MDEE, however movement rates had a positive linear relationship. Energetic ecology is important for understanding drivers of animal movements. Data from GPS collars can provide useful information on energetic expenditures, but should be validated for the specific taxa, ecosystem, and GPS sampling rate used. Additionally, while movement-based estimates of energy expenditure can elucidate the mechanisms driving habitat use decisions, they may not fully reflect an animal’s overall energy demands. Brown bear movement-based energetic expenditure was influenced by food abundance and movement rates, which highlighted the importance of access to prime foraging sites to enhance energetic efficiency.
